Two Israeli military officers fired for using drones to kill relief workers in Gaza

The Israeli military has fired two officers and gave warnings to three others for their part in drone attacks in Gaza that killed seven aid workers. The military said they mishandled important information and broke the rules.

The investigation by a retired general found that Israel was embarrassed to admit that it is not doing enough to protect civilians in Gaza from its conflict with Hamas. The US and other important allies are accusing Israel of not taking proper steps to safeguard the people in Gaza.

The results will probably make people doubt the choices made by the Israeli military. Palestinians, aid groups, and human rights organizations keep saying that Israeli forces shoot at civilians without being careful, but Israel says this is not true.

“It’s a very sad event,” said the military’s spokesperson, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari spoke to the reporters. “We are responsible for a serious event that should not have happened, and we will make sure it doesn’t happen again. ”

Israel is being told to take responsibility for what it did. Hagari and other officials told reporters the results of the military’s investigation on Thursday night.

It’s not certain if the punishments and apology will make people feel better about the workers who died, or make aid groups feel safe to come back to Gaza, where many people don’t have enough to eat.

According to what the people who speak for the Israeli army said, targets have to be seen as dangers for many reasons before they can be attacked. But the investigation found out that a colonel gave permission for several drone attacks on the group of vehicles because a major saw, in blurry footage from a drone camera, that someone in the group had a weapon. The military officials said that the observation was not true.

The army said the colonel and the major were fired, and three other officers were told they did something wrong. It said the investigation results were given to the military’s advocate general. The advocate general will decide if the officers and others involved in the killings should get more punishment or be prosecuted.

Israel’s friends were very upset about the killings and they criticized Israel for how they have been acting in the war with Hamas, which has been going on for almost six months.

The aid workers were five people from different countries who worked for a charity called World Central Kitchen, which was started by a famous chef named José Andrés. The driver from Palestine was also killed.
