Special Counsel Robert Hur has been asked to investigate how President Joe Biden dealt with secret papers. He will go before Congress to talk about it in March.
American news outlets said that Mr. Hur will speak to a group of Republican politicians about what he knows on March 12.
The news comes after Mr. Hur raised concerns about the president’s memory and mental health in his report.
Mr Biden had a strong reaction to the 345-page report.
“I know exactly what I’m doing. ” I was the president and I made this country strong again. Last week, the president said he doesn’t want his recommendation.
House Republicans want to talk to Mr. Hur about what he said about the president’s memory.
They also asked him to give them the recordings and written versions of his interviews with Mr Biden that he made during his investigation that lasted a year.
The US Justice Department said last week that Mr. Biden won’t be charged for keeping and sharing secret information as a private citizen.
The shocking part of the report was that one of the reasons Mr. Hur didn’t prosecute the 81-year-old president was because of Mr.
The special counsel said that most people would see Mr. Biden as a nice old man with a bad memory, not as someone who did something wrong.
The way he was described is a big problem for his campaign to get re-elected. Biden, his friends, and lawyers didn’t like it.
A letter from the White House Counsel to the Attorney General said that the special counsel broke the rules by making comments about Mr. Biden’s mental capacity. This was reported by Politico and the New York Times.
“The Special Counsel can say that the President didn’t remember a specific fact or series of events,” Mr. Siskel wrote in the letter, which was written on February 7th but first reported on Thursday.
“His report also says the President has trouble remembering things in general, which doesn’t have anything to do with enforcing the law. ”
The White House did not answer a question about the topic.
Mr Hur wrote a report after investigating Mr Biden’s handling of secret documents from when he was vice president for a year. The investigation included talking to the president.
The special investigator said that Mr Biden, who is 81 years old, knowingly kept secret documents after he stopped being vice president in 2017. He said it would be hard to prove Mr. Biden’s guilt due to his age, mental fitness, and behavior.
Sometimes, he used certain moments that Mr. Biden and his friends described as very personal.
In one part, he gave an example of the president’s memory, saying that Mr. Biden didn’t remember when his son Beau died, even though it was just a few years ago.
Some Republicans are criticizing Mr. Biden’s mental abilities and age as he tries to get re-elected for a second term as President.
At the same time, Democrats say that Mr. Hur, a Republican who was chosen by former president Donald Trump for the job of US attorney for the District of Maryland, is biased for political reasons.
After the report came out, Mr. Biden held a surprise news conference and said strongly, “My memory is good. ”
The president was angry and asked how could he dare to bring up that topic, referring to the claim that he couldn’t remember when his son died.
