Biden asks Israel to protect those who are weak in Rafah

US President Joe Biden said people in Rafah, Gaza are crowded and in danger. They need to be kept safe.

Israel needs to try really hard to keep the more than one million Palestinians safe in the southern Gazan city.

Rafah is getting hit a lot by Israel’s planes. People are getting hurt.

A doctor from Palestine said people in Rafah are scared.

Last week, the leader of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, said he told soldiers to get ready to go into Rafah. He promised to win against the Hamas fighters who are hiding in the city.

The leader of the UN’s human rights group said that any attack would be very scary and a lot of innocent people would probably die.

More than half of the 2. 3 million people in Gaza Strip are now living in the city on the border with Egypt. There used to be only 250,000 people there before the war between Israel and Hamas started in October.

Many people who have nowhere to live are staying in temporary shelters or tents in dirty conditions, with little access to clean water or food.

On Sunday, Israel’s army saved two men who were being held captive in Rafah.

President Biden once more asked for the safety of the people in Rafah after talking with King Abdullah of Jordan in Washington on Monday.

He said if the military wants to do a big operation in the city, they need to make sure that the people living there will be safe.

Saudi Arabia said there would be big problems if Rafah was attacked.

At the same time, the leaders of Hamas in Gaza said that many people could get hurt if there is a fight, and it could also make it harder to talk about getting Israeli hostages back from Gaza.

Rafah is the only place where humanitarian aid can come into Gaza from Egypt.

Israel’s army started attacking Gaza Strip because 1,200 people were killed in southern Israel on October 7 by gunmen from Hamas. The gunmen also took 253 people as hostages.

Some of the hostages were let go, but Israel says they still don’t know where 134 of them are.

On Monday, the health ministry in Gaza, run by Hamas, reported that 164 people were killed and 200 were injured in Gaza in the past day. 28,340 people in Gaza have died and almost 68,000 have been injured since October 7th, according to the ministry.
