Israel has asked Russia to keep all of its citizens safe, including Jews, after a big group of people, some of whom were yelling hateful things about Jewish people, violently entered an airport in Dagestan.
Videos on social media showed a group of angry people running through the Makhachkala airport searching for individuals who had arrived from Tel Aviv.
Some people from the crowd went onto the runway and gathered around the planes.
Russia’s air travel authority, Rosaviatsia, stated that the security forces were able to handle and resolve the situation.
The airport is closed by the authorities and will remain closed until Tuesday, according to Rosaviatsia.
Russian news agencies are reporting that the police have arrested sixty people who are said to be involved in organized crime.
Videos showed many people rushing into the airport building, some with flags from Palestine.
A lot of people in the crowd yelled mean things about Jewish people and some chanted “Allahu Akbar” which means God is greatest.
The news said that a group of people were stopping cars near the airport in Makhachkala. They were asking to see people’s documents in a disorganized manner because they were looking for Israeli passports.
According to the health ministry of the country, twenty people, including a few police officers, got hurt. Some people have really bad injuries and two of them are in very dangerous condition.
Dagestan is a region in Russia where most people follow the Muslim religion. It is located in the northern part of the Caucasus area and has around 3. 1 million residentsIt is situated near the western side of the Caspian Sea. The government announced that they have started a legal case against someone for causing chaos in public.
The Israeli leader’s office said that Russia needs to take strong action against encouraging violence towards Jews and Israelis.
A spokesperson for the US president, Adrienne Watson, said in a message on Twitter “the United States strongly condemns the protests against Jewish people in Dagestan”.
The US strongly supports the Jewish community as we see a rise in antisemitism around the world. The person in charge of the White House National Security Council said that there is no excuse or reason for hatred towards Jewish people.
The government of Dagestan showed their support for Gaza but asked the people to stay calm and not join the protests. Many people all over the world are protesting against Israel’s attacks on Gaza.
Dagestan’s Governor Sergei Melikov criticized the mob’s attack on the airport in a message on the messaging app Telegram.
“He wrote that it is wrong to insult and harm strangers by searching their pockets for their passports. ” He strongly disapproved of “acts of violence against women who have children”.
He said that the mob’s actions were like betraying Dagestani patriots, including those who are fighting for Russia in Ukraine.
“What occurred at our airport is unacceptable and law enforcement should investigate and evaluate it properly. ” He said that it will be done.
Israel’s foreign ministry said that the Israeli ambassador in Moscow is collaborating with Russian authorities. They also strongly condemn any actions that might harm Israeli citizens and Jews around the world.
Israel wants the Russian police to protect all Israeli citizens and Jewish people, no matter who they are. They want the police to take strong action against the people causing trouble and making threats towards Jews and Israelis.
On Saturday, a lot of people in the city of Khasavyurt in Dagestan came together outside a hotel because they thought some Israelis were staying there.
The people protesting threw rocks at the windows, and someone posted a sign on the door that said: “People from Israel (specifically Jews) are not allowed to come inside. ”
Afterwards, the police allowed some people to enter the hotel in order to confirm that there were no Israelis present.
Other countries in the North Caucasus are also facing unrest, not just Dagestan.
Over the weekend, someone burned down a Jewish center in the region of Kabardino-Balkaria.
Akhmed Dudayev, who is in charge of giving out information in Chechnya, has asked people not to be influenced by troublemakers.
He wrote on Telegram, “We must stop people from encouraging hatred between different ethnic groups. Stay alert and don’t let yourself be fooled. ”
