I am confident Bawumia will lead Ghana to prosperity – Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has voiced unwavering support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, expressing confidence in his ability to revitalize Ghana’s economy if elected in the upcoming December elections.

Speaking with journalists on Sunday, November 17, Kufuor highlighted Bawumia’s exceptional skills in economic management, referencing his significant contribution during Kufuor’s tenure.

He pointed to Bawumia’s role in working closely with the Bank of Ghana, under Governor Dr. Paul Acquah, to stabilize the Ghanaian currency during a period of economic difficulty.

“Given the current global circumstances, I firmly believe that Ghana’s economy will experience significant improvement if Bawumia is elected as President. With divine guidance, he is capable of delivering on this promise, and I encourage you to support his candidacy.

“I have observed his remarkable abilities in economic enhancement during my tenure, as he was integral to the Bank of Ghana’s team under Governor Dr. Paul Acquah, contributing to the revival of the currency.”

With global economic challenges mounting, Kufuor emphasized that Bawumia’s leadership would provide the right solutions for Ghana’s economic growth.

Urging Ghanaians to support Bawumia’s candidacy, Kufuor stressed the importance of a decisive vote to ensure the country’s economic future remains in capable hands. His endorsement of Bawumia reinforces the confidence that the former president has in his potential to lead the country toward a prosperous and stable future.

Bawumia’s plan to upskill 5,000 youth in Kwadaso through digital training

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed an ambitious plan to empower one million young people with digital skills, beginning with 5,000 youth from Kwadaso Constituency.

This initiative, which aims to bridge the digital skills gap, was announced at a constituency connect event held in Kwadaso.

At the event, Dr. Bawumia outlined how the initiative would provide training in skills such as coding, enabling participants to work remotely for global companies.

He highlighted the importance of equipping the youth with relevant digital skills in a world that is rapidly moving towards technology-driven opportunities.

“The youth need skills. We’ve introduced technical and vocational training, but they also need digital skills, as the world has shifted to digital.

He stressed that digital skills are not limited to those with formal education, making the program accessible even for school dropouts.

Bawumia emphasized that young people in Kwadaso could start working for companies in countries such as the US, Canada, and Singapore, all from their local communities.

“From right here in Kwadaso, one can work for companies in the US, Canada, and Singapore. Even school dropouts can be trained.

“My goal is to have at least one million people trained in digital skills, starting with five thousand youth from Kwadaso Constituency. This way, they can stay here and still work internationally”

The initiative is set to kick off in Kwadaso, with plans to expand and train one million youth across the country.

Dr. Bawumia described the policy as a game changer that would open up global employment opportunities for the youth, fostering economic growth and self-sufficiency.

As the global economy continues to embrace digital transformation, Dr. Bawumia’s vision is to ensure that Ghana’s youth are well-equipped to take advantage of the expanding digital job market, both locally and internationally.

Appiah-Kubi deserves to be a Supreme Court judge – Justice Atuguba

Retired Supreme Court judge, Justice William Atuguba, has commended the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, for his professional integrity and impartiality as a lawyer.

In an interview with JoyNews on November 12, 2024, Justice Mr Atuguba praised Appiah-Kubi, stating that although the MP is a dedicated NPP member, he consistently makes legal decisions based on merit rather than political bias.

Mr Atuguba highlighted Appiah-Kubi and the late Anthony Akoto Ampaw, President Akufo-Addo’s lawyer in the 2020 election petition, as two individuals he would have appointed to the Supreme Court if given the opportunity.

He pointed out that both men have made legal choices on national issues that often go beyond the interests of their political affiliations.

“It’s not everybody who has been involved in politics who can be necessarily politically minded. I am speaking for myself. Somebody like the late Akoto Ampaw of blessed memory, I can say that as far as I’m concerned, even though he was in the president’s chambers, he was his lawyer in the election petition 2020. If I had my way and that man was interested in going to the Supreme Court, I would have appointed him because if a legal issue arises, he will look at it professionally. You can trust Akoto Ampaw to do that.

“There’s another lawyer, currently he’s a Member of Parliament. I’ve never known him, I’ve never seen him except on social media. Appiah-Kubi … such a person, if I had my way and he was interested in the Supreme Court, I would put him there because he’s a brass stack NPP but very objective-minded; very, very objective,” he said.

Divine guidance is key to Ghana’s progress and unity – Bawumia

Vice President and NPP Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reaffirmed his strong belief in God’s guidance, emphasizing that all things are possible through divine intervention.

Speaking to a Catholic congregation in Atimatim, Afigya Kwabre East Constituency, during his ongoing campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia shared that his slogan, “It is possible,” was rooted in his unwavering faith.

He told the congregation, “With God, all things are possible,” highlighting his deep trust in God’s role in shaping his journey to the presidency.

Reflecting on his political journey, Dr. Bawumia noted that his candidacy for President was divinely ordained, starting from his election as the NPP’s presidential candidate.

He cited Psalm 127, stating, “Unless the Lord builds the house, you labour in vain,”

The congregation applauded his mention of a Christian verse, which was especially notable given that Dr. Bawumia is Muslim.

His reference to the Bible resonated with the congregation, illustrating the unity and respect between Ghana’s two major religions.

Dr. Bawumia’s visit also served as a symbol of religious harmony, as the event saw both Muslim and Christian leaders, including Imams, Zongo Chiefs, and traditional rulers, gathered in one place.

The leaders expressed their delight at the peaceful coexistence of different faiths in Ghana, noting the rare and remarkable sight of Imams attending a Catholic service.

Praising the unity on display, Dr. Bawumia said, “There is peace and understanding between Muslims and Christians in Ghana, and it is one of the reasons we have peace,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“It is so beautiful to see Imams here in this chapel. This reflects our mutual understanding and respect for each other. You will hardly see this anywhere in the world, but this is happening in Ghana.”

“Let us continue to live in harmony and respect one another”.

NPP’s victory is certain on December 7 – Wontumi

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Wontumi, has expressed confidence that the party will emerge victorious in the upcoming December elections.

At a campaign rally for NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in Bosome Freho on Saturday, Wontumi boldly stated, “We will win the December polls. We are winning on the first try, with no rerun. On December 7th, victory is on our side. We are winning!”

His comments come as the NPP ramps up its campaign efforts, rallying support for Dr. Bawumia, who is poised to take the presidency.

Wontumi firmly believes that Bawumia will lead the country after the elections.

Dr. Bawumia, addressing supporters in Asante Akim Central, emphasized the importance of the Free SHS policy, which he said was designed to level the educational playing field for disadvantaged students.

He reassured the public that the policy would continue to support those who need it most.

While in Bosome Freho, Dr. Bawumia also acknowledged the region’s poor road infrastructure, pledging, “I know your biggest challenge is road infrastructure. I promise to fix all deplorable roads when I am elected. So, I urge you to give me the mandate.”

  • Bagbin is creating chaos in Parliament – Afenyo-Markin

Bagbin is creating chaos in Parliament – Afenyo-Markin

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has sharply criticized Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to adjourn Parliament indefinitely, describing it as an action that “amounts to supervising chaos” and undermines the integrity of Ghana’s democratic processes.

The adjournment on Thursday, November 7, followed a lack of business in the House due to the absence of New Patriotic Party (NPP) members. In response, Afenyo-Markin expressed his discontent with the sequence of events leading to the decision.

He clarified that the NPP’s absence was not a result of negligence or irresponsibility but stemmed from a procedural issue. Afenyo-Markin explained that the Clerk of Parliament had failed to print the necessary documentation, including the Order Paper, which outlines the agenda for parliamentary discussions.

This oversight, he noted, prevented the NPP from engaging in parliamentary proceedings. Without the Order Paper, the session could not proceed, and the NPP was unable to participate.

Afenyo-Markin stressed that this procedural lapse was at the root of the problem, and the NPP should not be blamed for the adjournment.

Instead, he emphasized that the failure to address the administrative issue led to the misinterpretation of the NPP’s absence as a lack of commitment to parliamentary duties.

“What Mr. Speaker did today amounts to supervising chaos and bringing the image of democracy to disrepute. The NDC minority members were all over claiming that we, the Majority did not attend a so-called Business Committee meeting that they called.

“Who are they and when did we constitute a new committee in Parliament? I chair the Business Committee and when the Clerk of Parliament asked for the Business Committee meeting, I was explicit that the subject matter of the recall is the very matter for consideration and so there was no need to have another business committee.

“Business Committee is to decide on the business of the House and on this occasion, you have made an application which has been granted and the items that had been approved were the very things to be decided on so I directed that the Order Paper be printed to reflect all those items.”

2024 elections: I have the NPP flag, and I pray against them everyday; they’ve hurt Ghana – Nigel Gaisie

Founder of Prophetic Hill Chapel, Prophet Nigel Gaisie, has stated that he is fervently praying against the New Patriotic Party’s victory in the 2024 general elections. Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM on November 6, 2024, Gaisie criticised the NPP, accusing them of negatively impacting both the church and the nation.

He urged Ghanaians to hold the party accountable in the upcoming elections.

Gaisie shared that he is engaging in fasting and prayers for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and for Ghana as a whole, expressing strong dissatisfaction with the current administration.

“I’m fasting for the NDC. I’m fasting for Ghana. I’m praying against the NPP government. I have their flag. Every day, I’m dealing with it. They have hurt the church, they have hurt the nation, and they have to go. Ghanaians must punish them,” he said.

When questioned about his authority to influence voters, Prophet Gaisie responded, “I’m a prophet of God. A prophet is a messenger of the Almighty God.”

He defended his prophecies, stating that he has seen the vision over 1,000 times and has even travelled to Israel to pray about it since November last year.

“When I see it and I go back, I’ll get it right. Some of it. I’ll just see it in a trance or a vision and I’m not so interested. I’ll not investigate it. But about this prophecy. I’ve travelled on it, gone to Israel, and prayed about it since November last year. I’m fasting so I can’t get it wrong,” he said.

Asked if his stance was because he was sponsored by a political party, Prophet Gaisie denied any financial support from any party.

“Nobody has sponsored me. Nobody has given me a dime. I don’t even know anybody,” he clarified.

Gaisie’s remarks come as Ghana prepares for the December 7, 2024 elections, where citizens will choose their next president and parliamentary representatives.

With election day nearing, political campaigns have ramped up, with candidates employing various strategies to win over voters.

Wake up if you think NPP will win December polls – NDC

An aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, has critiqued the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) approach to the upcoming 2024 elections, suggesting it resembles a strategy of self-amusement.

Her remarks came in response to Joseph Osei Owusu’s claim that available research shows the NPP is poised to win the election.

Madam Mogtari countered this assertion, stating that only the NPP’s self-generated polls and research support the idea of their victory.

Highlighting the disparity in polling data, she noted that reputable polls consistently favor Mahama for the presidency and project a significant parliamentary majority for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a social media post, she expressed her skepticism, stating, “tickle yourself and laugh.” If not, why would their party’s leading figures be on a deliberate self-serving run across the country, spreading inaccurate and fake research outcomes to tickle themselves and their followers?

Mogtari further emphasized the facts: since 2022, Dr. Bawumia has consistently lagged behind Mahama in credible research studies, including two conducted by the National Identification Bureau (NIB).

She also pointed out that the NDC holds a substantial lead over the NPP in parliamentary seats, with districts like Atwima Mponua, Offinso North, and Dome posing significant challenges for the ruling party.

Trust in my ability to manage Ghana’s resources – Bawumia appeals

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, pledged to safeguard the public purse from mismanagement if he is elected in the December elections.

During a job fair on Sunday, November 3, 2024, he appealed to Ghanaians, particularly the youth, to place their trust in him.

Bawumia highlighted the crucial need to use public funds responsibly for the nation’s benefit and encouraged voters to provide him the opportunity to prove his capability in advancing the country’s development.

“I will tell you why we are all not the same and cannot be the same. I am not John Mahama; he is a former vice president and president. I am a vice president who has never been president before and am asking you for the opportunity to lead and show what I can do if offered the chance this December.

“You can trust me to protect the public purse and use it selflessly to serve you,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of voting for a candidate who not only makes promises but also has the qualities necessary for effective leadership.

He urged Ghanaians, especially the youth, to choose a leader who can bring about meaningful and positive changes in their lives.

“To the young voters of Ghana, I say to you: do not switch off. I ask you to get involved. December is about you; it’s about who can deliver for you and your future—whom you trust, who has the integrity, vision, energy, competence, and sense of where the world is today, your place in it, and who has the humility to serve you and the decency not to insult you,” Dr. Bawumia urged.

NPP has created 1.4m jobs in private sector, 1.2m in public sector – Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has spotlighted the Akufo-Addo administration’s success in job creation, asserting it has surpassed previous governments.

Referencing Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) data and additional sources, Dr. Bawumia reported that around 2.6 million jobs have been generated, with 1.4 million positions in the private sector and 1.2 million in the public sector.

He underscored that these figures represent the government’s dedication to bolstering Ghana’s economy and providing more opportunities for citizens.

Dr. Bawumia also acknowledged the current economic challenges, but he reassured Ghanaians of his commitment to continued job creation efforts if elected in December.

“We have done a remarkable job in creating jobs in the last seven years, indeed so far, as of yesterday or a day before…I checked the data from SSNIT and other sources and so far, between 2017 and 2024, the latest data is that we have created 2.6 million jobs.

“1.4 in the private sector and 1.2 in the public sector. This is the highest of any government in the 4th Republic and the highest job creation. We have more to do because we still have high unemployment. Our youth still need jobs,” Bawumia said during his Engagement with the Youth in Accra on Sunday, November 3.

  • You’ve got no level over Bawumia – Akufo-Addo to Mahama

You’ve got no level over Bawumia – Akufo-Addo to Mahama

President Akufo-Addo recently took aim at former President John Dramani Mahama, emphasizing that Mahama is Ghana’s only one-term president.

During a tour of the Ahafo Region on Tuesday, October 29, Akufo-Addo questioned Mahama’s credibility and political influence, suggesting that his inability to secure a second term undermines any claims he might have to superiority over others.

This criticism follows Mahama’s recent refusal to participate in a debate with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

While speaking to supporters in the Ningo Prampram Constituency in Greater Accra, Mahama dismissed the idea of a debate, arguing that it would only serve to elevate Bawumia to his level.

He insisted that he is not required to engage a Vice President on policy matters.

In reaction to Mahama’s stance, President Akufo-Addo asserted that Mahama has no grounds for claiming superiority over Bawumia, noting that his one-term presidency does not place him above the Vice President.

He remarked that Mahama has “no level” over Bawumia and criticized his avoidance of discussions with him based on seniority.

Akufo-Addo urged his supporters in Ahafo to support Bawumia in the upcoming elections, highlighting the Vice President‘s leadership and contributions as indicators of his capacity to effectively lead Ghana.

“Mahama says he won’t debate Bawumia because Bawumia is not on his level. Really? He is not his class, but for me, I don’t know what class Mahama has for which reason, he says he won’t debate Bawumia.”

“For me, the only class I know is that since the Fourth Republic, five persons have had the opportunity to be presidents of this country but unfortunately one person couldn’t complete his term and God called him to glory, but the four left, only one person that Ghanaians gave him one term based on his poor performance and that his Mr Mahama. So if he says he has class, it is that class, and he is the only person with that class,” the President said.

On Sunday evening, October 27, 2024, three supporters of Agona West independent candidate Cynthia Morrison were reportedly shot and injured by an unidentified individual in Agona Nyakrom, Central Region, during a mini-rally.

The incident unfolded following a sudden power outage in the area.

The injured individuals were taken to the hospital for treatment, while Morrison and her team went to the police station to report the incident.

Eyewitnesses claim the shots originated from a black campaign vehicle believed to belong to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate.

A witness described the scene to GHOne News’ Yaw Boagyan “The gun was fired from one of the campaign cars belonging to Chris (NPP Parliamentary candidate). As the car drove past, a young man hit the vehicle repeatedly. The driver stopped and got out, and as the young man who hit the vehicle tried to flee, the man fired the gun but it hit three people who sustained injuries”.

No arrests have been reported yet in connection with the incident.

I am confident NPP will win December poll – Bawumia

The flagbearer for the Ne Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed strong confidence in his chances of winning the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.

While addressing supporters at a campaign event in Ketu North, located in the Volta Region, on October 24, 2024, Bawumia, who is also Ghana’s Vice President, highlighted insights gained from his visits to over 200 constituencies.

He believes that Ghanaians are receptive to his vision for the future and are poised to cast their votes for the NPP.

He further asserted that the accomplishments of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration will play a crucial role in convincing voters to support the NPP in the elections.

Bawumia’s remarks reflect his commitment to continuing the party’s legacy and fostering confidence among the electorate.

“I have been touring over 200 constituencies in Ghana and I can tell you from what I have seen today, I know that we are winning this election.

“You will hear by the midnight of December 7 that NPP has won this election,” the vice president is quoted as having said.

He encouraged party members to remain focused on achieving victory and avoid being sidetracked by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Currently touring the Volta Region, known as the NDC’s stronghold, the Vice President has emphasized the NPP’s accomplishments in government.

Throughout his visit, he has drawn clear distinctions between the NPP and the NDC, highlighting the party’s successful track record as a critical aspect of their campaign message.

NDC is collaborating with Bagbin to sabotage us – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of utilizing the recent standoff in Parliament as a strategic move to secure a win in the 2024 elections.

According to the NPP, this alleged strategy is detailed in a document called “Winning the 2024 Elections and Beyond: A Comprehensive NDC Strategy.” The NPP claims the document outlines how the NDC intends to use its near-majority in Parliament to obstruct government business.

At a press conference held on Wednesday, October 23, the NPP’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, charged that the NDC is collaborating with Speaker Alban Bagbin to intentionally hinder the legislative agenda of the ruling government.

Ahiagbah further contended that the NDC has been executing this plan since 2021, leading to parliamentary gridlock and the derailment of crucial government operations, all aimed at advancing their electoral strategy for 2024.

The NPP urged the Ghanaian public to remain alert to these alleged tactics, warning that they could jeopardize national governance and impede significant development initiatives.

“This strategy the NDC has operated with since 2021 is on full display with what is happening in parliament. So we have a situation where the NDC, for some odd reason, decides they want to be the majority and, therefore, in partnership with the speaker actively aids that seeming coup détat by the NDC.

“But the point that ought to be made is that this is not an isolated incident, this is part of a coordinated effort by their own design outlined in its books to ensure that they use every means available fair or foul to disrupt government business.”

Govt businesses to be affected by adjournment of parliamentary sitting

The Speaker of Parliament’s adjournment of parliamentary sittings yesterday is expected to impact several government businesses that were before Parliament for deliberation and approval.

Speaker Alban Bagbin indefinitely adjourned sitting amid a controversy over vacant seats, leaving several key parliamentary businesses such as the approval of two Supreme Court Judge nominees appointed by President Akufo-Addo and tax waivers over $350 million, in limbo.

In July this year, President Akufo-Addo nominated two new judges to the Supreme Court bench following their approval by the Judicial Council.

These two professors Richard Frimpong Oppong, a legal academic and fellow of the Ghana Academy of Sciences, and Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah, a justice of the Court of Appeal were to be approved by Parliament following a vetting by the Appointments Committee.

But they never met the Appointments Committee due to chaos, emanating from unconstitutional appointment claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) members on the committee.

The government in the second quarter of the year presented a $350 million tax waiver request for some 42 companies under the One District One Fund (1D1F) initiative.

However, this request was never granted on the floor of parliament during an emergency sitting, where the leader of the National Democratic Congress Caucus, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, questioned the basis for such waivers when the government is in dire need of funds as a result of the economic crisis.

On the matter, the Member of Parliament for Effutu and leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alexander Afenyo-Markin accused the NDC MPs of stifling the progress of local companies and Ghanaian businesses with their action.

Order in Parliament is Bagbin’s responsibility – Annoh-Dompreh

Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh has emphasized that only the Speaker of Parliament holds the authority to decide which side of the House is designated for the Majority, refuting any claims that other officials or bodies have this power.

In a video circulating online, Annoh-Dompreh is seen heading toward the Parliament Chamber amid accusations from Minority Chief Whip Governs Kwame Agbodza.

Mr Agbodza alleged that Annoh-Dompreh was assisted by security personnel at the Accra International Conference Centre to enter the Chamber early and secure the Majority side.

Addressing these allegations in the video, Annoh-Dompreh responded, saying, “We have also given the strongest indication that we will occupy the Majority side of the House, but the orderliness in the Chamber and the precinct of Parliament lies in the bosom of the Speaker.”

His remarks draw attention to the Speaker’s key role in managing parliamentary seating arrangements and maintaining order, an issue that has gained prominence amid the ongoing dispute over which party controls the majority in Parliament.

During an interview with Nana Tuffour Boateng on Citi FM on Tuesday, October 22, Agbodza revealed that a circular issued on Monday, October 21, indicated that the Chamber doors would only be opened at 8 am.

He accused security personnel of colluding to allow Annoh-Dompreh early access to the Chamber.

The Adaklu MP further stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs and Parliament’s security would be responsible if any disruptions occurred when proceedings commenced at 10 am.

“Parliament issued a circular that the Chamber be opened at 8 am and the security apparatus of this country connived and opened the doors for the Annoh-Dompreh to enter the Chamber. I am here and I am seeing him inside with the doors locked and the question is how did he get in there?

“I can’t assure orderliness when Annoh-Dompreh has broken the law and is currently sitting in the Chamber and the security apparatus is not making any attempts to remove him.”

  • Parliament adjourned indefinitely

    Parliament adjourned indefinitely

Speaker Alban Bagbin has adjourned Parliament indefinitely. This decision follows the ongoing controversy surrounding his ruling on the vacant seats in Parliament.

In his address, Speaker Bagbin noted a recent Supreme Court ruling concerning the status of four Members of Parliament, allowing them to retain their seats pending a final decision on the matter.

“Honorable members, as you may recall, on Thursday, I informed the house pursuant to Standing Order 18 of the Standing Orders of Parliament on the occurrence of vacancies in the house in relation to four honorable members. Yesterday, I received a process from the Supreme Court, which is a ruling from the Supreme Court pursuant to an ex parte application directing Parliament to recognize and allow the four affected Members of Parliament to duly represent their constituents and conduct the full scope of duties of their offices as members of Parliament, pending a final determination of a suit filed by Honorable Alexander Afenyo-Markin,” he told the house.

Citing Articles 102 and 104 of the Constitution, further explained the constitutional requirements for a quorum and decision-making in Parliament.

“By Article 102 of the Constitution, 1992, and Order 64 (1) of the Standing Orders of Parliament, I note that we currently have a quorum to transact business, but not to take decisions. Article 102 reads, ‘A quorum of Parliament, apart from the person presiding, shall be one-third of all the members of Parliament.’ As presently constituted, the numbers are definitely far above one-third of the members of Parliament. But by Article 104, the numbers are not sufficient for us to take decisions. Article 104 (1) says, ‘Except as otherwise provided in this Constitution, matters in Parliament shall be determined by the vote of the majority of members present and voting, with at least half of all the members of Parliament present.’ Honourable members, we don’t have at least half of all the members of Parliament present.”.

Given the current circumstances and the question on the composition and constitution of Parliament, Speaker Bagbin decided to adjourn the house indefinitely. He cited Standing Orders 59, which allows the Speaker, in consultation with leadership, to suspend a meeting of the house indefinitely or for a period determined by the Speaker, considering the public interest and the exigencies of the state of affairs in the country.

“The house is accordingly adjourned sine die,” Speaker Bagbin concluded.

This indefinite adjournment raises significant questions about the legislative process and governance in Ghana, as key decisions and legislative activities are now on hold until further notice.

    Background and Reactions
The controversy began when Speaker Bagbin declared the seats of four Members of Parliament vacant on October 17, 2024. The affected MPs are: Andrew Asiamah Amoako (Independent, Fomena Constituency), Cynthia Morrison (NPP, Agona West Constituency), Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah (NDC, Amenfi Central Constituency), Kwadjo Asante (NPP, Suhum Constituency).

The Supreme Court intervened, issuing a ruling to stay the Speaker’s decision and allowing the MPs to retain their seats until a final determination is made. The court emphasized that the Speaker’s declaration deprived the affected constituencies of representation and could disrupt government business.

Reactions to the Supreme Court’s ruling have been mixed. Legal experts have stressed the importance of adhering to court rulings to maintain order and prevent chaos. The Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has urged Parliament to comply with the Supreme Court’s decision to avoid further instability.

Meanwhile, the NDC Caucus in Parliament has challenged the ruling, arguing that parliamentary proceedings should not be subject to judicial interference and has gone ahead to assume majority status.

    1. Who holds the majority? All eyes on parliament tomorrow as NDC vows to defy SC

Who holds the majority? All eyes on parliament tomorrow as NDC vows to defy SC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), has boldly declared itself the new parliamentary majority, defying a recent Supreme Court order that stayed the Speaker of Parliament’s ruling on vacant seats.

The declaration, made at a press conference, marks a significant escalation in the ongoing power struggle within Ghana’s legislature, as the NDC asserts its claim to majority control.

“The NPP group in Parliament are now the minority caucus as defined by the relevant sections of Order 6 in the standing orders of Parliament. The minority means members of the party or parties that have the second-largest number of seats in Parliament. Honourable colleagues, the NDC MPs now constitute the majority caucus in line with the standing orders of Ghana’s Parliament,” the NDC leadership stated emphatically during the press briefing.

The NDC’s position comes in response to the Speaker’s controversial decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant—a move that temporarily tipped the balance of power in their favour. However, the Supreme Court’s stay of execution, issued last week, halted the Speaker’s ruling and effectively nullified the NDC’s brief majority status pending further legal deliberation.

Despite this, the NDC remains adamant. “We will jealously protect our new majority status and will not bow, retreat, nor surrender our lawfully earned status. Nothing, absolutely nothing will change this position,” the party declared. They further argued that Parliament’s business must proceed independently, warning that any interference with its processes would be “unlawful, unacceptable, and shall be resisted.”

The party’s defiance has heightened political tensions ahead of Parliament’s next session, scheduled for Tuesday, October 22, 2024. As the two main political parties—NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP)—jostle for control, the stakes could not be higher.

The NDC’s bold stance has drawn mixed reactions. Dr. Dominic Ayine, the former Deputy Attorney General, welcomed the opportunity for the NDC to take legislative action once Parliament reconvenes. Speaking to Citi FM, Dr. Ayine said, “We will start implementing our manifesto on Tuesday, including repealing obnoxious pieces of legislation like the e-Levy and other taxes.” He also underscored that parliamentary majorities are determined by numerical strength, which he claimed now favours the NDC.

Dr. Ayine and other NDC figures have criticized the Supreme Court’s stay, calling it premature and outside the bounds of judicial oversight. “The Supreme Court in its haste to assert its authority grossly erred,” Ayine remarked. “There was no appeal before any court of competent jurisdiction for there to have been a stay of execution.”

On the other side, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin expressed satisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decision and called on Parliament to respect the legal process. “The court has determined the matter, and we expect all parties, including the Speaker, to respect the law,” he said, reaffirming the NPP’s confidence in the judiciary’s intervention.

      Legal and Political Ramifications

The NDC’s defiance of the Supreme Court ruling raises important constitutional questions about the separation of powers in Ghana. Legal analysts have expressed concern over the implications of the NDC’s move, as it may set a precedent for future disputes between the legislative and judicial branches.

The ongoing legal battle centres on the interpretation of constitutional provisions regarding parliamentary vacancies and majority status. The Supreme Court’s final ruling could not only affect the current balance of power but also redefine the role of the judiciary in parliamentary affairs.

Political Context Ahead of December Elections

This latest confrontation comes at a critical time, with general elections just months away in December 2024. Both the NDC and NPP are seeking to solidify their positions as they head into the campaign season, and the fight for control of Parliament is becoming a key issue. The NDC’s declaration as the majority party, despite the legal uncertainty, could energize its base and bolster its position in the run-up to the elections.

However, political commentators have warned that the NDC’s defiance of the court order is a risky strategy. While it may rally party loyalists, it also opens the party up to criticism for undermining the judiciary, which could affect its standing with swing voters.

As the legal and political battles continue, the question of which party holds the majority in Parliament remains unresolved, with both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) claiming control. The outcome of this power struggle will likely have significant implications for the governance of the country in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections.

The Supreme Court has ordered the Speaker and Attorney General to file their statements of case within seven days, indicating that this battle is far from over. In the meantime, Ghana’s political landscape remains fraught with uncertainty as both parties vie for supremacy in Parliament and beyond.

    2. We won’t back down, we will forever be the Majority – NPP MPs

We won’t back down, we will forever be the Majority – NPP MPs

The Majority in Parliament has expressed their approval of the Supreme Court’s recent decision, which enables four MPs whose seats were previously declared vacant by the Speaker to continue representing their constituencies and fulfilling their official duties.

In a post shared on the X page of Citi FM on October 19, 2024, the MPs proclaimed, “We are the majority, and we will remain the majority! NPP MPs passionately declare as they exit the Supreme Court after the court halted the execution of the Speaker’s ruling on four vacant seats.”

This statement was made as they exited the Supreme Court, where the court had halted the enforcement of the Speaker’s ruling regarding the four vacant seats.

A video accompanying the post shows the NPP caucus exiting the court premises in high spirits.

This ruling follows the Supreme Court’s issuance of a stay on Speaker Alban Bagbin’s earlier decision, which had declared the seats of Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central), and Andrew Asiamah (Fomena) vacant.

With this directive, the MPs can fully represent their constituents and carry out their duties.

The stay of execution was requested by New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament, who sought the court’s intervention to prevent the implementation of a ruling that would have impacted three NPP members and one from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

    3. My govt has made historic progress in health sector – Akufo-Addo

My govt has made historic progress in health sector – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has highlighted his administration’s significant accomplishments in the health sector, deeming them unprecedented.

He stated that the ambitious Agenda 111 project, once completed, will drastically transform Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure.

While speaking at the inauguration of the new Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on October 18, the President noted the government’s achievements in lowering maternal, adolescent, and child mortality rates, which he identified as crucial indicators of progress in healthcare delivery.

He reiterated his government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services and infrastructure to meet the nation’s growing demands.

“From 2017 to August this year, we’ve added some 8,665 hospital beds for admission i.e. from 24,153 hospital beds in 2016 to 32,818 hospital beds by August 2024, representing a rise of some 36% further underscoring our commitment to expanding healthcare infrastructure.

“This excludes the total number of beds to be provided by the Agenda 111 Project. We’ve also made significant strides in reducing maternal, adolescent and child mortality rates.

The Institutional Maternal Mortality Ratio (IMMR) has shown a steady decline, dropping from 127.3 deaths per 100 live births in 2018 to 102.1 deaths per 100 live births in recent years.

Additionally, there have been notable improvements in reducing neonatal, infant, and under-five mortality rates.

However, despite these advancements, challenges persist, particularly in ensuring equitable access to healthcare services for children across the country.

These achievements underscore our commitment to enhancing healthcare services and advancing toward the Sustainable Development Goals. Our specific targets include reducing maternal mortality to 70 deaths per 100,000 live births and under-five mortality to 12 deaths per 1,000 live births by 2030.

“Despite these gains, challenges remain particularly in ensuring equitable access to healthcare services for children across the country.

    4. It’s time to move on – Gyampo tells NPP MPs

It’s time to move on – Gyampo tells NPP MPs

A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has called for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus to rejoin Parliament and collaborate with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus for the greater good of the nation.

His appeal comes in response to Speaker Alban Bagbin’s recent ruling, which declared four parliamentary seats vacant following a motion from former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu.

The motion referenced constitutional provisions that require MPs to vacate their seats if they run as independent candidates or switch party affiliations.

The affected MPs are Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central).

This ruling shifts the balance of power in Parliament, potentially allowing the NDC-led Minority caucus to outnumber the NPP-led Majority caucus.

In a Friday interview with Joy FM, Prof. Gyampo remarked on the NPP’s past misinterpretation of the law during a similar scenario in 2020, suggesting they should approach this outcome with calmness. “The NPP misapplied and misinterpreted the law in 2020, and today the same situation has occurred against them. They need to accept this reality without excessive emotion,” he stated.

He emphasized the importance of the NPP’s return to Parliament to work alongside the NDC to facilitate the passage of critical legislation.

“Go back to Parliament and see how best they can work with the NDC Caucus to ensure that the bills and other businesses that were outlined are done for the betterment and interest of mother Ghana. So staying at home and boycotting parliamentary sitting in my view is not the best thing to do,” Prof Gyampo advised.

    5. All hail Emperor Alban Humpty-Dumpty Bagbin! – Gabby

All hail Emperor Alban Humpty-Dumpty Bagbin! – Gabby

A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has described Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin a “Humpty-Dumpty”.

This remark follows Bagbin’s controversial decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant, which Otchere-Darko argues misinterprets the constitutional provisions concerning cross-carpeting and party loyalty.

On October 17, 2024, Speaker Bagbin announced the vacancies following a motion put forth by former Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

The MPs affected by this ruling include Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah (NDC MP for Amenfi Central), Andrew Amoako Asiamah (Independent MP for Fomena), Kojo Asante (NPP MP for Suhum), and Cynthia Mamle Morrison (NPP MP for Agona West).

The Speaker’s decision was based on the MPs’ choices to run in the December 7, 2024, general elections as independent candidates or under a different party than the one on which they were initially elected.

Bagbin stated that this action breached Article 97(g) and (h) of the 1992 Constitution, aimed at curbing defections and ensuring party loyalty within Parliament.

In his remarks, Otchere-Darko criticized this interpretation, alleging that the Speaker is using the Constitution for political gain.

He stated, “According to Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, an MP has no constitutional right to take steps with the intention to change party affiliation, even if only for a future contest, without losing her seat.”

He further lambasted Bagbin’s reasoning as a “serpentine bypass of cerebral discord.”

He contended that the Speaker’s ruling undermines the original intentions of the Constitution’s framers.

“If it is too late for a by-election, then she can no longer continue to represent the party by which she came to Parliament even if, per her own actions in the House.

“She has shown no intention to cross the carpet for the duration of the Parliament for which she has been duly elected to serve her constituents and in a Chamber that, per its Standing Orders, one is either with the Majority or Minority.

“The curious reasoning of Alban Bagbin, Esq. He has managed with this serpentine bypass of cerebral discord managed to turn upside down the intentions of the framers of the Constitution and, by so doing, to rather resurrect the very mischief that Article 97 (1)(g) & (h) sought to cure.

“Call it the comedy of the Bagbinian doctrine of what should be made reasonable. All hail Emperor Alban Humpty-Dumpty Bagbin!” he added.

A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has voiced his concerns regarding Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin’s recent decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant.

Expressing his discontent with the ruling, Otchere-Darko characterized the Speaker’s action as a misinterpretation of the Constitution’s provisions related to cross-carpeting and party loyalty.

    7. Boycotting parliament is not the best decision – ACEPA to NPP MPs

Boycotting parliament is not the best decision – ACEPA to NPP MPs

Executive Director of the African Center for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Dr. Rasheed Draman, has raised concerns over the timing of Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant, a move that has ignited political tensions and debate.

On October 17, Speaker Bagbin ruled that the seats held by Cynthia Mamle Morrison (NPP, Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (NPP, Suhum), Peter Kwakye-Ackah (NDC, Amenfi Central), and Andrew Amoako Asiamah (an independent MP from Fomena who recently rejoined the NPP) were vacant. This decision followed allegations of constitutional violations by the MPs.

In a recent interview, Dr. Draman expressed doubts about whether this was the right time to make such a significant ruling, especially with the country heading toward national elections. He highlighted the potential implications of this decision on the political climate and parliamentary operations.

While acknowledging the legal provisions that permit such declarations, Dr. Draman urged caution, stressing that these decisions should be approached with careful consideration due to their impact on both the functioning of Parliament and the country’s democracy.

He also supported the Majority Leader’s call for the courts to provide clarity on the matter, warning that any boycott of Parliament would not be in the country’s best interest, particularly during an election year.

    8. Govt will protect Ghana’s water bodies, forest reserves – NAPO

Govt will protect Ghana’s water bodies, forest reserves – NAPO

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice-Presidential Candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has reiterated the government’s dedication to protecting Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves while promoting responsible mining practices.

During a recent appearance on Peace FM in Accra on October 16, Dr. Prempeh addressed the ongoing issues related to illegal mining, known as galamsey, which have caused significant damage to the nation’s natural resources.

He emphasized that while mining activities will persist, they will be strictly regulated to prevent operations in sensitive areas like water bodies and forest reserves.

“We will never stop mining. Mining has given the country a lot of benefits; how else would we be able to implement the Gold-for-oil Policy? But we will not mine in water bodies and forest reserves.

“We will implement policies that will equip miners, be it community mining or small-scale mining, with resources for them to mine responsibly and restore the environment.

“We don’t like the use of mercury and the other things they use to disrupt the environment. It was Nana Addo’s government that brought in the gold catchers that are bringing in a higher amount of gold, the same amount of work you have done.

“As the saying goes, water is life and as the last tree dies, the last man dies.. that is why you don’t get people living in the desert. We will protect the forest, we will protect the water bodies, but the mining will continue to be done,” he stated.

Dr. Prempeh outlined plans to introduce policies that will empower miners—whether engaged in community or small-scale mining—to operate responsibly and restore the environment. He condemned the use of harmful substances like mercury, which disrupt the ecosystem.

He highlighted the government’s introduction of gold catchers, which have significantly increased gold production without compromising environmental integrity.

    9. My fight against galamsey cost NPP votes in 2020 – Akufo-Addo

My fight against galamsey cost NPP votes in 2020 – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed that he has taken significant political risks, even putting his presidency at stake, in the ongoing battle against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Since his commitment to tackle the issue in 2017, his efforts have faced substantial criticism.

Speaking during his ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Northeast Region on Tuesday, October 15, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his resolve to eliminate galamsey, affirming that he stands by his promise and is willing to face any consequences as a result.

He expressed disappointment over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) poor performance in mining communities during the 2020 elections, attributing the decline to propaganda spread by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.

The president pointed out that the NPP’s support almost collapsed in key mining areas, particularly in the Western Region.

“In the last election [2020] in the mining districts of the country, the NPP did very badly largely because the NDC presidential candidate and the party had gone around the mining areas and said that the policy that I was implementing of trying to stop galamsey would be reversed when he comes to power and that those who were already in jail for offences, the galamsey offences, all of them would be amnestied.

“When I said I was putting my presidency on the line, that’s what I meant, that I was prepared to take the political risk involved in trying to deal with this galamsey phenomenon. The result, of course, was that the mining districts, especially in the Western region, all of them, including almost nearly even Tarkwa, were lost to the NPP.

“That is what I meant when I said I’m putting my presidency on the line, that I was prepared to take the political risk involved in coming to grips with this problem.”

He then challenged Mahama to clarify his position on galamsey.

“Today, he [Mahama] said that, no, he doesn’t believe in jail, that he’s against galamsey, and he will enforce the law. So once again, we have to ask ourselves, Mr. JM, where do you stand? What are you telling the people of Ghana? Because every time you speak, you speak from one corner of your mouth and you speak from another corner of your mouth.”

    10. A vote for NPP is a vote for our future – Free SHS beneficiaries

A vote for NPP is a vote for our future – Free SHS beneficiaries

In a passionate call to action, graduates of Ghana’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy are urging their fellow beneficiaries to unite and cast their votes for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 elections.

They argue that supporting any other party would be a significant mistake, given the NPP’s pivotal role in implementing a policy that has positively impacted millions of Ghanaian youth.

In an interview with OTEC News Reporter Jacob Agyenim Boateng on Sunday, October 13, 2024, several graduates expressed heartfelt gratitude to the NPP government for the educational initiative that has transformed their lives.

They committed to rewarding the party with substantial votes as a gesture of appreciation for providing them with free high school education.

One of the beneficiaries, Elorm Owusu, highlighted how the policy enabled her to pursue higher education and pledged her unwavering support for the NPP.

“For me, I will vote for the NPP on any day having gone to SHS for free.” She said.

Another graduate, Kwabena Gyamfi, reinforced the sentiment, asserting that the NPP is the only party capable of safeguarding the policy.

“I am of the view that, the policy will be better protected if NPP remains in power, hence my advocacy for other beneficiaries to vote massively for them.”

Additionally, parents and guardians in the region echoed the graduates’ sentiments, describing the Free SHS policy as the most significant social intervention program in Ghana’s history.

They expressed their intention to vote overwhelmingly for the NPP in the 2024 polls, citing the substantial financial relief it has provided their families.

    11. Bawumia reflects core values of respect and civility – Prof Sikanku

Bawumia reflects core values of respect and civility – Prof Sikanku

A noted scholar in political communication, Professor Etse Sikanku, has praised Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his role in promoting civility, dignity, and decency within Ghana’s political arena.

During a book review event for his latest work, Dr. Bawumia and the Modern Vice Presidency, held at the Islamic University College in Accra, Prof. Sikanku highlighted that this aspect of Bawumia’s leadership stands out as one of his significant contributions to the nation’s political discourse.

The conversation also delved into broader themes of leadership, emphasizing how Dr. Bawumia’s approach fosters a constructive atmosphere for political discussions in Ghana.

“One of the greatest contributions of Dr. Bawumia to Ghana’s political space is the decency and civility he brings. He is not just a political leader. He is a worthy example of respect, courtesy, good manners, decorum, and decency in politics,” he said.

Prof. Sikanku emphasized that for Ghana to advance democratically, it is crucial for leaders to exhibit decency in their political discourse, campaigns, and discussions.

“Political civility is a sine qua non for effective deliberation and democratic maturity. If this country is to experience democratic advancement and remain a beacon of hope for Africa, then it is time to do away with the low-level politics of insults. Intemperate language should give way to civil discourse, prejudice should give way to open-mindedness, slander should give way to respect, and propaganda to data,” he said.

Prof. Sikanku added that Dr. Bawumia exemplifies political decency by elevating the standards of political communication in Ghana.

“This is the Bawumia example. Rich, quality, intelligent, data-driven, policy-laced discourse setting the tone for public discourse and subject to debate,” he said.

“If we want to protect our democracy, then it’s important to safeguard the language through which the business of politics is conducted. We have to be an inspiration and example to the future generation in terms of the tone, tenor, and nature of language that we use in this democratic journey,” he stated.

Adding, “Bawumia is a man of conviction, guided by his convictions to advocate for issues that will take Ghana to the next frontier, such as digital technology,” Prof. Sikanku noted. “Political civility, including tolerance, is fundamental to our stability.”

    12. NPP Northern Regional Nasara coordinator suspended over controversial remarks

NPP Northern Regional Nasara coordinator suspended over controversial remarks

The Northern Regional Nasara Coordinator for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Abdul-Fatawu Adam Danjega, has been suspended indefinitely due to allegations of misconduct.

This decision was formally announced in a letter from the party’s Northern Regional Executive Committee.

The suspension follows Danjega’s recent social media remarks and his outbursts on various media platforms, which the Executive Committee believes have damaged the party’s reputation.

In their statement, the Committee noted that Danjega’s behavior violated Article 4(7) of the party’s constitution, which prohibits members from actions that bring disrepute to the party.

On October 12, 2024, the Northern Regional Executive Committee met to discuss the issue. After thorough deliberation, they resolved to suspend Danjega and escalate the matter to the Regional Disciplinary Committee for a comprehensive investigation.

This action aligns with Article 4(3)(2) of the NPP’s constitution, which allows the Regional Executive to engage the Disciplinary Committee in cases of significant misconduct. Danjega’s suspension is effective immediately, and he is required to fully cooperate with the ongoing disciplinary proceedings. He will remain suspended from his position as the Northern Regional Nasara Coordinator until the investigation is concluded and a final decision is reached.

    13. I told Owusu-Bempah NPP will betray him, but he was stubborn – A Plus

I told Owusu-Bempah NPP will betray him, but he was stubborn – A Plus

Ghanaian musician and politician Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as Kwame A Plus, recently shared details of a conversation he had with Reverend Isaac Owusu-Bempah, leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, regarding the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

A Plus revealed that he had cautioned Reverend Owusu-Bempah against aligning with the NPP, believing it wasn’t the right party for him. Despite his warnings, the clergyman chose to continue supporting the party.

He explained that he had previously advised Owusu-Bempah against following the NPP, suggesting they weren’t suitable for him. A Plus believes that the challenges the reverend has faced are a form of divine punishment for ignoring this advice.

A Plus said, “The truth is that Rev. Owusu-Bempah is my big brother, but it is God who has punished him for whatever is going on in his life. I warned him against these people (NPP), that they are not good. But he sat me down and lectured me on the best government for this country. When he was arrested, he realized that… I told my brother not to follow these people; I prophesied to him that these people are not good, but he still insisted. The day he was remanded into police custody, I wanted to call him and congratulate him that my prophecy had come to pass.”

A Plus also expressed support for a recent prophecy by Owusu-Bempah, which predicted that National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama would win the upcoming December 7 elections.

“As for that prophecy, I believe it. He should keep giving that prophecy. I won’t believe any other prophecy apart from a prophecy that is about John Mahama,” he emphasized on the October 12 edition of United Showbiz.

    14. We can offer the change Ghanaians seek – CPP

We can offer the change Ghanaians seek – CPP

The presidential candidate for the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Akosua Frimponmaa Sarpong Kumankumah, has sharply criticized the Akufo-Addo administration for its management of Ghana’s economy.

Speaking to the media, Nana Akosua emphasized the CPP’s distinct economic vision, advocating for urgent reforms to address the current challenges.

She positioned the party as a credible alternative for voters seeking change in the upcoming 2024 elections.

“All you have to do is look around you, look at your life and where you are. Everything, access to, I can’t even say it, it’s surprising. Have you been to the market of late? Have you tried buying even ordinary bananas on the streets? One finger of the local banana is GHC2. The point is that everything is wrong. The economy, economy that is all it is,” She said.

When asked about her strategy to revive the struggling economy, she stressed the importance of focusing on the micro economy.

Nana Akosua argued that while Ghana may appear to perform well on international metrics, these figures do not reflect the everyday challenges faced by its citizens.

To bridge this gap, she pledged to introduce policies that would directly improve the lives of Ghanaians, such as providing affordable housing and ensuring access to clean water.

“It’s simple, it’s not rocket science. It’s nothing that you really need. I will be talking about the micro because the macro is what they have been using to deceive us all this time. They come in there, take our GDP and manage it properly and they say oh it’s good governance. Then they tell you whatever is going up is good [inflation].

“Meanwhile, the micro economy which is the problem is what I’m going to fix. Unlike other parts of the world that say that Ghana is doing well based on indicators, we don’t eat indicators. We’re talking about our living standards, what we do today, access to accommodation, how much am I paying for electricity. How much is your transport in comparison with your salary?”

Kumankumah promised to stabilize the Ghanaian cedi if elected and urged citizens to reject the incumbent New Patriotic Party government, calling on them to vote for her in the upcoming December elections.

    15. DCEs for Biakoye, Atebubu-Amantin step down

DCEs for Biakoye, Atebubu-Amantin step down

The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development has confirmed the resignation of two District Chief Executives (DCEs).

The officials who have stepped down are Edward Owusu, the Municipal Chief Executive for the Atebubu-Amantin Municipal Assembly in the Bono East Region, and Millicent Kabuki Carboo, the District Chief Executive for the Biakoye District Assembly in the Oti Region.

In a statement released on October 10, the Ministry indicated that the resignations align with Section 20(3)(c) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

However, the specific reasons for their departures were not disclosed.

Following the resignations, the Ministry has instructed the respective Regional Ministers to temporarily take on the responsibilities of acting District Chief Executives for the two assemblies until the President appoints permanent replacements.

The Ministry also expressed gratitude for the contributions of the departing DCEs.

“The Ministry takes this opportunity to express its appreciation to Hon. Edward Owusu and Hon. Millicent Kabuki Carboo for their dedicated service and contributions to the development of their respective Assemblies”.

    16. Organised labour’s actions are politically driven by NDC – NPP

Organised labour’s actions are politically driven by NDC – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised alarms regarding the underlying motivations for organised labour’s proposed protest against illegal mining (galamsey).

They argue that these actions seem to coincide with the political agenda of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the 2024 elections approach.

In a press release by Salam Mustapha, NPP’s National Youth Organiser, he cited a leaked confidential document titled “Winning 2024 and Beyond,” allegedly prepared by the NDC in 2021 and disclosed in December 2022.

Mr Mustapha claimed the document outlines the NDC’s 2024 electoral strategy, and there are growing indications that organised labour is following this politically driven plan.

He alleged that “this document outlines the NDC’s strategy for the 2024 elections, and it is becoming increasingly evident that organised labour is following this politically motivated plan.”

“Over the past weeks, we have seen organised labour embark on a number of actions including threatening a national strike and vocalising strong opinions on the issue of illegal small-scale mining (galamsey).

“Interestingly, this newfound activism comes on issues they have largely been silent on for years. It is highly questionable that they have only found their voice with two months to go before the election, especially on an issue as critical as galamsey,” the statement pointed out.

The NPP highlighted the government’s sustained efforts over the last seven years to tackle illegal mining, pointing to key legislative actions, prosecutions, and military interventions aimed at preserving the environment and natural resources.

The party questioned why organised labour, which had been silent during these efforts, has now become vocal critics.

The NPP also accused organised labour of ignoring substantial concessions made during a recent meeting with the President to address their concerns.

Despite the government’s efforts, the NPP alleged that organised labour’s current stance is politically motivated, aimed at destabilizing the government as part of the NDC’s strategy outlined in the leaked document.

The party called on Ghanaians and organised labour members to resist any efforts to politicize the fight against galamsey, stressing that the issue transcends political affiliations and requires a united national front.

“The future of our environment, livelihoods, and communities depends on us coming together to fight illegal mining as one united front. All hands must be on deck to combat this menace and ensure the sustainable use of our natural resources.

“Let us put the interests of Ghana first and stop using galamsey as a political tool.”

    17. No one can bring down NPP; not even Owusu-Bempah – Wontumi

No one can bring down NPP; not even Owusu-Bempah – Wontumi

the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has dismissed claims made by the founder and leader of the Glorious Word and Power Ministry International, Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah.

Rev. Owusu-Bempah recently asserted that he could topple the NPP and proclaimed that God has chosen former President John Mahama as Ghana’s next leader.

The controversial pastor, renowned for his past predictions favoring the NPP, has stirred public interest with his recent declaration that he serves as a vital link to the presidency in Ghana.

In an interview with Okay FM, he stated, “I am very humbled and a man of God. I say this to the glory of God – no one can sit on the presidential throne without my involvement,” he said in an interview on Okay FM.

These remarks have sparked irritation in Chairman Wontumi, who firmly believes that Rev. Owusu-Bempah does not dictate the NPP’s future.

He contended, “Some people are making it look like the NPP can never win power without their prophesies, but that is not true, it can never be true…does he (Owusu-Bempah) think he is the only one who has invested in the party? I dare you, I will never stop at anything, he should get it clear…,” he warned.

“What has the NPP done to you? We can’t force you to be an NPP member, but he must remember that just like Jonah, he will be forced to go to Nineveh even if he doesn’t want to because it is the plans of God that will come to pass, so he (Owusu-Bempah) should stop behaving like he eats with God in one bowl…,” he said.

Additionally, Wontumi labeled Rev. Owusu-Bempah a ‘Pharisee’ for his failure to criticize individuals such as Kelvin Taylor, who have openly spoken against him and members of the Northern community.

    18. You no longer need the NPP and NDC – Alan to Ghanaians

You no longer need the NPP and NDC – Alan to Ghanaians

The Presidential candidate for the Movement for Change, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, has called on voters to reject the two dominant political parties, the NPP and NDC, in the upcoming December 7 elections.

He argued that after over three decades in power, these parties have little to show for their tenure and emphasized the need for Ghanaians to demand better governance.

During his passionate speech in Memsonso Number 1, located in the Akrofuom Constituency of the Ashanti Region, Kyerematen expressed his discontent with the status quo.

“After 32 years of the NPP and NDC, look around you. What do we have to show for it? These parties will come to you, offering lies and false promises. I tell you, they are liars trying to deceive you,” he stated.

He urged the community, “Let me tell you, if the NPP and NDC come around, tell them that you don’t need them anymore,” Alan stated firmly. His fiery speech, delivered on October 7, 2024, as part of his 19-day campaign tour, sent a clear signal that his movement was gaining momentum. The former Trade and Industry Minister made it clear that neither of the two political parties had the people’s true interests at heart, and Ghanaians should not be fooled by their empty promises or token gifts.

This fervent message, delivered on October 7, 2024, during his 19-day campaign tour, clearly illustrated the growing momentum behind his movement.

As the former Trade and Industry Minister, Kyerematen reiterated that neither major party had genuine intentions for the people, warning voters against being swayed by superficial promises or token gestures.

Mr Kyerematen’s impact in the Ashanti Region is becoming increasingly evident, with his campaign gaining traction and communities rallying around his vision.

As his support continues to build, the Movement for Change is positioning itself as a significant player in Ghana’s political landscape. Kyerematen is drawing large crowds, resonating with voters through his promise of real development for neglected areas.

The traditionally NPP stronghold is witnessing a notable shift as Kyerematen’s bold campaign gains momentum.

Bawumia won’t disappoint because he has learnt from Akufo-Addo – Samira Bawumia

Samira Bawumia, the wife of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has likened her husband to a driver’s mate who has gained valuable experience from his master and is now ready to take charge.

Speaking at Kodie in the Afigya Kwabre South District during her week-long tour of the Ashanti Region, where she focused on Zongo communities, Samira expressed confidence in her husband’s capabilities.

She emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s track record as vice president surpasses that of his predecessors, making him the ideal candidate to lead the country toward significant transformation.

“Bawumia and the NPP have great plans for Ghana. Bawumia will continue and improve upon all the significant initiatives of President Akufo-Addo, so please hand him the steering wheel as the driver on December 7.

“He has served as a ‘mate,’ learned from his experience, and is now ready to lead, so vote for him for transformation.

“We have had several vice presidents in the country, but Bawumia has outperformed them all, particularly with his digital solutions,” she stated.

    21. Certain individuals are working to hack EC’s systems – NPP

Certain individuals are working to hack EC’s systems – NPP

The Director of Elections for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Evans Nimako, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to enhance its electoral systems to safeguard against potential hacking attempts.

During the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, he emphasized the importance of bolstering security measures in response to concerns about the voters’ register.

Nimako specifically urged the EC’s IT team to remain vigilant and fortify their systems to thwart unauthorized access by hackers.

“I would also want to bring this to the attention of the IT that you should still be mindful of people trying to get access into your systems the EC’s systems so they would hack it. Be mindful of that.

He also urged the Electoral Commission to share a defined number of polling stations with political parties, particularly the NPP, to aid in their preparations for the upcoming elections.

“That there are about 40,000+ polling stations, we want to have the specific numbers so that it would help with our planning arrangements towards the D-Day.

He praised the Electoral Commission for engaging with political parties to address raised concerns.

Noting observations from elections in countries like Nigeria and Kenya, he emphasized that similar interactions had helped resolve issues in those nations shortly before elections.

He criticized the use of certain platforms to make baseless allegations, stating that such actions do not benefit the country.

His main goal is to ensure peaceful elections, highlighting that since 2008, the NPP has advocated for various electoral reforms and a credible voters’ register.

While supporting the need for a reliable register, he insisted they would adhere to C.I. 126 as amended and C.I. 127, which outline the process for cleaning the register.

He described the NDC’s call for a forensic audit of the register as an unnecessary distraction.

    22. You are already losers, boycott 2024 elections – NPP to NDC

You are already losers, boycott 2024 elections – NPP to NDC

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwah, has dismissed concerns about the National Democratic Congress (NDC) impact on the NPP’s chances in the upcoming 2024 elections.

He suggested that even if the NDC chose to boycott the elections, it would not hinder the process, downplaying their significance as a threat to the NPP.

During an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo on September 29, 2024, Owusu Amankwah further argued that the NDC’s absence would likely enhance the NPP’s chances of victory by reducing the number of presidential candidates.

“… If the NDC decides to boycott the elections it will even help because they are one of the 9 political parties participating. So, if they think they do not have any message for the good people of this country and if they access their achievements during their tenure and realise Ghanaians are hesitant to vote for them, they can decide to boycott the 2024 elections and it will still come on,” he said.

Touching on the NDC’s concerns about the voters’ register, Owusu Amankwah stressed that the elections would not be affected. He noted that the Electoral Commission has committed to correcting the register and will re-exhibit it online.

“The Electoral Commission said they will re-exhibit the voters register online after making the corrections so now the election will surely come on. Balloting has already been done as well as the exhibition even though the second one will be done following corrections made,” he added.

    23. Protests won’t change EC’s decisions – NPP tells NDC

Protests won’t change EC’s decisions – NPP tells NDC

The National Youth Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has stated that any attempts by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to prompt the Electoral Commission regarding the voter register will be futile unless they pursue legal action.

Last week, the NDC organized nationwide protests to address alleged irregularities in the voter roll, calling for an independent forensic audit to correct errors and ensure fair elections.

The opposition party asserts that the register contains significant irregularities that could impact approximately 300,000 votes, thereby undermining the credibility of the upcoming elections.

Specific irregularities highlighted by the NDC include 243,540 previous transfers improperly added to the 2024 transfers, over 15,000 unidentifiable transfer paths, the removal of 3,957 names from the roll, 2,094 voters transferred to different polling stations, and corrupt files.

During a meeting in Accra on Monday, September 23, 2024, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, mentioned that the party is uncovering additional irregularities and emphasized that an audit of the voter roll and the Electoral Commission’s IT system would help ensure a smooth election on December 7.

In response, Salam Mustapha, in an interview on Asempa FM, accused the NDC of misleading Ghanaians and encouraged them to present their evidence directly to the Electoral Commission instead of seeking public support through protests.

“It’s not that we have no problems with the register, any person who attends IPAC meeting will tell you that we have disagreement with the Electoral Commission. But some of the issues we don’t make them public. This particular one is one of a fishing expedition that the NDC wants to take everybody. It is a roller coaster wild goose chase. When we pinned the Electoral Commission down in 2015 we provided them with evidence. So if you claim you have uncovered one or two irregularities and the EC says come over, they should go and sit with them and challenge them, but you say you’ll not give them any evidence.

“Secondly, the only body that has power to give directive for the EC to comply is the court and not the street. So what the NDC just did [demonstration] was mere exercise and it is good. Burning fat is good. If they don’t know their way to the court, it’s their own business.”

    24. NAPO takes campaign tour to Bekwai Constituency

NAPO takes campaign tour to Bekwai Constituency

The political scene is gaining momentum as the running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has made two prominent visits to the Bekwai constituency within four days.

On September 21, 2024, Dr. Opoku Prempeh initiated his campaign by engaging with the Amoafo and Bekwai traditional councils, introducing himself as the NPP’s candidate for the upcoming elections.

Shortly thereafter, he visited the paramount chief and elders of the Kokofu traditional council to extend his outreach.

These visits were intended to seek blessings and communicate the NPP’s vision of hope and progress for the nation.

In his speeches, Dr. Opoku Prempeh promised to visit all seven paramountcies in Bekwai ahead of the December 7 elections. He urged the chiefs to inspire their people to support the NPP, emphasizing the government’s achievements like the Free SHS program and other vital development projects.

He also backed Lawyer Ralph Poku-Adusei as the successor to Joe Osei Owusu, cautioning against independent candidates who could disrupt the party’s unity and success.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh highlighted Bekwai’s significance within the Ashanti Region, noting that it is home to seven paramount chiefs and nine Abrempong, all loyal to the Golden Stool. He vowed to ensure the NPP secures major victories in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

His campaign activities have reinvigorated the NPP’s grassroots efforts, energizing party officials and supporters in the Bekwai constituency as they gear up for the December elections.

    25. Govt inflated DRIP contract by GHS1.6bn – Ablakwa alleges

Govt inflated DRIP contract by GHS1.6bn – Ablakwa alleges

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu and a representative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has vocally criticized the government for allegedly inflating the prices of equipment purchased for the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP).

Ablakwa pointed out that a recent parliamentary investigation revealed an inflation of over $102 million (GH₵1.6 billion) in procurement costs. This situation has resulted in Ghanaian taxpayers facing an unnecessary financial burden, with costs reaching $178.7 million instead of the true figure of $76.6 million.

In a statement on Facebook, he emphasized that the equipment was mainly sourced from Chinese manufacturers LiuGong and Shaanxi Automobile Holding Group, with supplies facilitated through J.A. Plantpool, a subsidiary of Zoomlion.

Ablakwa criticized the government for allowing prices to be inflated by as much as 217 percent.

“Even more appalling, industry officials engaged say that these rates can be substantially discounted with a bulk purchase, and are therefore in total shock that the super bulk purchase by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/J.A.Plantpool deal rather led to these cruel price escalations.

The North Tongu MP pointed out that this finding undermines Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s earlier claims made in 2016 and 2017, where he condemned single-sourcing contracts as overpriced and lacking value for money.

Ablakwa highlighted that despite the Vice President’s assurances to eliminate such practices, the DRIP contract, awarded through single sourcing, starkly illustrates the very issue he promised to rectify.

“Some experts have told me that with US$ 178.7 million, Ghana would have been better off starting its own road construction equipment manufacturing company.

“Now many analysts believe the excitement of Vice President Bawumia about DRIP has got little to do with any potential impact in road construction,” the North Tongu MP said.

Mr. Ablakwa announced that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in Parliament will initiate a comprehensive investigation into the issue.

He urged for decisive measures to stop the payment of the inflated sum and to ensure accountability for what he termed a “national wrecking” deal.

    26. Damapre tried to kill me through lethal injection – Owusu-Bempah alleges

Damapre tried to kill me through lethal injection – Owusu-Bempah alleges

Founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Reverend Isaac Owusu-Bempah, has accused the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, of orchestrating an attempt on his life following his arrest in September 2021.

Speaking to his congregation on Sunday, September 22, 2024, Rev. Owusu-Bempah alleged that during his arrest by masked police officers, there was an attempt to inject him with a lethal substance, which he fought off.

He questioned why members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) continue to insult him, saying, “Why do NPP members keep insulting me? What wrong have I done them? You made the IGP arrest me and wanted to kill me; the IGP was going to kill me. Do you know the IGP was going to kill me? He was going to inject me to death, and Nana Akufo-Addo did nothing to him. He hasn’t been questioned on who the police officers that came for me deep in the night were,” he told his church.

Rev. Owusu-Bempah claimed to have evidence of the incident, stating that eight masked officers came for him while he was in custody.

“While in the cells, I saw the police officers come for me and put me in a pickup. I was placed between them with handcuffs on my hands. One of them sitting in front brought out a syringe and wanted to inject me… I held it tight, leading to a struggle, and as a result, the syringe broke. I kept shouting for those in the cells to hear me. Even one police officer who recently came home to corroborate this heard me,” he stated.

He further explained that he had instructed his brother and junior pastors to keep watch at the police station while he remained detained. In an additional claim, he revealed that the vehicle registration number on the pickup was traced back to an old Honda Accord through a search at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).

“Do you know that our search at DVLA revealed that the number on the pickup belonged to an old Honda Accord? I am told that is the car that Dampare uses to pick people up and kill them. Dampare wants to kill me; can you, Dampare, kill me?” he questioned.

He recalled a conversation with former NPP General Secretary John Boadu at the time of his arrest.

“When I was being sent to the cells, John Boadu came there, and I asked him why they were treating me like that. He told me I shouldn’t be worried and that something would be done about it the next day. I called Chairman Wontumi, and he said the leaders are angry with me, and that it is only [Rev] Victor Kusi Boateng who can cause my release. So I said, what? Chairman, is that what you are telling me?

“I was detained for four days, but I still forgave you after your people came to beg me, and today you are allowing your people to attack me on the radio and lying about me conspiring with Stephen Wingam, leader of Assemblies of God and Archbishop, where? Don’t you know we are in an election year? Don’t you know God brought you to power through me in 2016 and 2020?” he questioned.

Rev. Owusu-Bempah mentioned that despite being detained for four days, he forgave the party members who came to apologize to him. However, he expressed frustration over ongoing radio attacks and false accusations linking him to conspiracies.

In a warning to the NPP, he urged them to stop attacking him, cautioning that their actions could negatively impact the party’s chances in upcoming elections.

    27. Vote for me and I will build you a mini harbour – Bawumia tells Sege residents

Vote for me and I will build you a mini harbour – Bawumia tells Sege residents

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has committed to developing a sea defence system and a mini harbour in Sege if elected as Ghana’s next President.

Addressing a crowd of chiefs, traditional leaders, and residents during his tour of the Greater Accra Region, Bawumia outlined his plan to combat the recurring damage from tidal waves affecting Sege and its neighboring areas.

He stressed that these infrastructure projects are crucial not only for mitigating environmental damage but also for boosting the local economy.

Bawumia emphasized Sege’s vital role as a fishing hub and argued that investing in a mini harbour will significantly enhance the fishing industry.

This infrastructure development aims to improve trade and market access for local fishermen and traders, supporting the community’s economic growth and stability.

“We need a mini-harbour. So we are going to work on bringing a mini harbour to Sege here for you and that is a very important thing. And then, of course, very important, we need to do the sea defence for this area.

“So I have a lot to do for you. If I come back in four years, I will have to give an account of what I have done with the sea defence.”

    28. Mahama and the NDC are instigating chaos ahead of December Polls – NPP

Mahama and the NDC are instigating chaos ahead of December Polls – NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of attempting to incite violence and create instability in Ghana as the December 7 elections approach.

According to the NPP, recent remarks by former President John Mahama and NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah are part of a calculated effort to mislead the public and stir unrest among their supporters.

Jeff Konadu Addo, the NPP’s Eastern Regional Chairman, highlighted specific comments from Mahama, including his recent disparaging remarks about clergy, traditional leaders, and civil society organizations.

Addo also pointed to Asiedu Nketiah’s recent criticism of the Electoral Commission, accusing it of electoral fraud, as evidence of the NDC’s alleged agenda.

“We condemn the recent inflammatory statements made by John Dramani Mahama, flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress,” he stated.

“Labeling respected leaders like pastors, chiefs, imams, and CSOs as ‘hypocrites’ and referring to the ruling NPP as a ‘foolish government’ is unacceptable. Such divisive rhetoric undermines national unity and promotes violence. We urge Mahama to adopt issue-based campaigning that promotes peace and tolerance instead. As Ghanaians, our diverse political views should unite us, not divide us. We must prioritize constructive dialogue and respect for one another.”

The NPP has urged John Mahama to refrain from using derogatory language and instead focus on promoting unity to ensure a peaceful electoral climate in Ghana.

“We’re reminding former President JDM to accept our invitation to engage in a constructive debate, focusing on substantive issues, innovative ideas, and verifiable data. We urge him to move beyond personal attacks and join us in a respectful exchange of perspectives.”

Mr. Konadu voiced his surprise at the NDC and its Chairman, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah, for calling for a forensic audit of the electoral register due to alleged anomalies a stance he had previously criticized.

He labeled these claims as unfounded, suggesting they reflect a misunderstanding of the electoral process and its safeguards.

Jeff Konadu highlighted that the NPP has spearheaded electoral reforms, emphasizing their commitment to transparency, accountability, and fairness.

He pointed to the introduction of transparent ballot boxes, biometric voter verification machines, and a color photo ID system as key components of the NPP’s efforts to uphold a free and transparent election process.

“We urge the NDC to refrain from baseless attacks on the Electoral Commission. As a party that believes in democracy, we recognize the importance of allowing the Commission to perform its duties without interference. The Electoral Commission’s independence is crucial to ensuring the integrity of the electoral process. We will continue to cooperate with the Electoral Commission, availing ourselves to its procedures and processes to ensure credible and transparent elections,” Mr Konadu stated.

    29. NDC’s call for voter register audit won’t change outcome of election – NPP

NDC’s call for voter register audit won’t change outcome of election – NPP

Dr. Mark Assibey-Yeboah, who chairs the NPP’s Manifesto Sub-Committee on the Economy, has dismissed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) call for a voter register audit as untimely.

Speaking on TV3’s Business Focus with Paa Kwesi Asare, Assibey-Yeboah pointed out that with the general election just 81 days away, the request for an audit could risk delaying the entire electoral process.

“My understanding is that they are calling for an audit of the voters’ register. I think it’s too late in the game. December 7th is 81 days away. Are they prepared to delay the election date?” he questioned.

Dr. Assibey-Yeboah elaborated that the Electoral Commission has already provided the public with opportunities to review the register and report discrepancies, such as deceased individuals listed.

He stressed that the Commission follows established procedures and timelines for managing the voter register.

“There are laid-down processes. We do the registration, we do the mop-up, then there is a display of the register for you to check your name and report names of the deceased. So, we’ve passed that stage,” he underscored.

Dr. Assibey-Yeboah asserted that John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s flagbearer, is voicing his frustrations due to personal challenges. He suggested that Mahama’s recent criticisms of pastors, chiefs, and other figures stem from this frustration. Dr. Assibey-Yeboah is confident that the NDC’s call for an audit will not alter the outcome of the 2024 general election.

On Tuesday, September 17, NDC supporters across all 16 regional capitals participated in the party’s “Enough is Enough” protest, highlighting alleged discrepancies in the 2024 voter register.

The NDC raised concerns about the provisional register, alleging that issues such as bloating at some polling stations were attempts by the Electoral Commission to skew the December 7 elections in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

    30. I’ll sanitize small-scale mining to tackle galamsey – Bawumia

I’ll sanitize small-scale mining to tackle galamsey – Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has presented his plan for tackling illegal mining, focusing on a preventive approach.

His strategy aims to reform the small-scale mining sector by enhancing the role of the Geological Survey Authority in mineral prospecting and creating a shared resource pool of equipment for sustainable mining practices.

Addressing concerns about illegal mining, commonly referred to as ‘galamsey,’ during a visit to Kpone Katamanso, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the need for proactive measures.

He stressed that responsible and sustainable mining can only be achieved through early intervention and thorough preparation.

“So one needs to look at the whole regime of small-scale mining and sanitise that regime, regularise the regime. Make sure that the Geological Survey Authority of Ghana does the mapping for where all the gold reserves are.

“At the moment people are just doing trial and error, destroying our environment. There is no data backing where they go. They just go and dig, they don’t find, they go to the next place and start digging. they don’t find, they go to the next place.

“But I want us to set up community mining schemes with certainty from the geological survey department that here you have gold. In that case, we can make sure that those who are mining there are regularised. We bring in these gold catcher machines that don’t use mercury and make sure they are not in water bodies.

“So we direct them and license them into areas so that they do responsible mining and environmentally sustainable mining.

“That is the way you stop this. But if you don’t regulate them then they will hide to do it at night and when they feel people are not watching them, that’s where they will go.

“They will get into the water bodies. But we need to regulate them and we need to also enforce the laws that are already existent,” he stated.

    31. We’ll oppose external audit of voters register – NPP

We’ll oppose external audit of voters register – NPP

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has pledged to strongly oppose any move to allow an external body to carry out a forensic audit of the voters’ register.

The party argues that the Electoral Commission (EC), which is constitutionally mandated as an independent body, should not be subjected to such an audit by an outside institution.

In an interview on Peace FM on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) stated that the issues raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) could be easily resolved without the need for an external audit of the voters’ register.

“If you look at our law, the EC is very independent; their independence is enshrined in the constitution, and you cannot undermine it. Again, whatever they do is guided by our constitution or the various Constitutional Instruments and amendments.

“If you look at the NDC demonstration and their grounds for it, they claim that after this year’s compilation of the voters’ register, they realized that there have been some transfers and dead persons on the electoral roll, and they have evidence of about 200,000 such persons. I read a statement from the EC indicating that when they met with the NDC, they asked the party to submit evidence of the discrepancies they claim to have identified so the commission could resolve the issue, but the NDC declined.

“The party is rather calling for a forensic audit by an independent body. This kind of complaint, which can be easily resolved, should not lead to an independent audit of a body that the constitution stipulates should be independent,” Nana B said.

He further stated that the NPP will vehemently oppose any such move.

“We in the NPP, when we were in opposition, once filed a similar complaint with the EC. We were asked to bring our evidence, and we sent it. The committee that presided over our concerns said there was no need for a new register to be compiled. Instead, an opportunity was given for a special voter exhibition exercise during which the names of dead people would be removed. That was what was done, and we used the same register for the general elections.

“We in the NPP will not allow any foreign interference. We will not allow any independent body to sit over a constitutionally created and well-established body. We will not allow the EC to let any foreign body conduct a forensic audit into its affairs. We will resist it fiercely. The demonstration that the NDC just held cannot compare to the action we will take,” Nana B added.

    32. Clarify your demands on voters’ register audit – Kweku Baako to NDC

Clarify your demands on voters’ register audit – Kweku Baako to NDC

Veteran journalist and social commentator, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, has expressed doubts about the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) call for a forensic audit of the voters’ register just three months ahead of the general elections.

He questioned the specific issues the NDC had identified with the register that would justify such an audit.

Mr Baako argued that clarity on the audit’s details would help shed light on the NDC’s demand. Without this, he believes their stance might come across as overly simplistic and intellectually far-fetched.

Additionally, Mr Baako raised concerns about how effective any recommendations from the audit could be, given the short time left before the 2024 elections.

He wrote, “Specificity! What is the scope and coverage of the independent forensic audit being demanded by the NDC? Have they made public the full complement of the specifics of their case for that demand? The issue of whether or not an audit,  forensic or otherwise, is needed now cannot be reduced to an academic or intellectual exercise. That’s an exercise in oversimplification and absurd intellectualism, which amuses me!

We’re dealing with realpolitik and statecraft.

Does it make sense to embark on a certain FORENSIC AUDIT by an entity 3 months before an election?

He added that, in practical terms, it’s worth considering whether undertaking such a forensic audit so close to an election makes sense.

    33. Bawumia’s aides do not trust his abilities – Ofosu Ampofo

Bawumia’s aides do not trust his abilities – Ofosu Ampofo

The former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has highlighted a strategic move by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s key appointees as an indicator of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) uncertainty about their prospects in the 2024 General Elections.

Addressing supporters at the campaign launch for NDC Parliamentary Candidate Bismark Tetteh Nyarko in Upper Manya Krobo, Eastern Region, Ofosu Ampofo pointed out that Dr. Bawumia’s sister, his economic affairs advisor, and his spokesperson, Dr. Gideon Boako, are all running for parliamentary seats.

He suggested that this move reflects the NPP’s growing concern over their electoral chances.

“How do people who are walking with the Vice President and working in his office, all of a sudden, change their minds and contest as MPs?” Ofosu Ampofo questioned. “If you truly believe your presidential candidate is going to win the election, why abandon your special position to seek a parliamentary seat? This is a clear indication that even those closest to Dr. Bawumia do not have confidence in his chances of becoming President.”

Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), claimed that the actions of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) suggest an acknowledgment of the NDC’s expected victory in the upcoming elections.

Speaking at the campaign launch for Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Upper Manya Krobo, Ofosu Ampofo stated, “The NPP itself knows that John Dramani Mahama will win the next elections, so they are looking for positions where they can remain relevant in opposition.”

Dr. Ofosu Ampofo also expressed concerns over the integrity of the current voter register, calling for an independent forensic audit to address what he described as a “tainted” document. He mentioned that the NDC has issued a statement calling for a nationwide demonstration, pointing out that the Electoral Commission (EC) announced the 2020 presidential results five times, which he said raises questions about the voter register’s credibility.

“The NDC has issued a statement about a nationwide demonstration because, for the first time in our country’s history, the Electoral Commission declared presidential results five times. They have admitted there are challenges with the voter register, and we demand an independent audit,” he said.

During the event, he urged constituents to vote overwhelmingly for both John Dramani Mahama and Bismark Tetteh Nyarko, highlighting the need for a strong parliamentary majority.

He added that the integrity of the electoral process rests on the voter register, stating, “For the first time since 1992, the Electoral Commission has admitted that there are problems with wrongful transfers. We will demonstrate and call on the international community and civil society to ensure our voter register is credible and fit for purpose.”

Eastern Region NDC Chairman, Mark Oliver Kevor, who officially launched the campaign, echoed the call for voters to support both Nyarko and Mahama to ensure cohesive development in the constituency.

As part of his commitment to the community, Bismark Tetteh Nyarko donated a brand-new canoe to the Akateng fishing community, signaling his dedication to improving the livelihoods of his constituents.
