Bolgatanga Traditional Council has appealed to Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and the government to review the recent closure of seven courts across the Upper East Region.
The courts were shut down on October 29, 2024, due to growing safety concerns among court personnel amid escalating conflict in Bawku.
Chief Justice Torkornoo defended the decision, highlighting the importance of safeguarding judicial staff and preserving the justice system’s credibility in regions affected by unrest.
Despite this, the Traditional Council voiced worries that the closures may limit access to justice in the region.
They urged officials to explore alternative safety measures that would allow the courts to remain operational while protecting court staff.
In a statement issued on November 1, the Bolgatanga Traditional Council said, “The Traditional Council is also appealing to the government and the Chief Justice to reconsider their decision and reopen the courts and re-enforce the necessary security.”
They also appealed to the feuding factions to allow peace to prevail.
Other influential voices are also urging the feuding factions to put aside their differences and allow peace to prevail.
