Renowned Ghanaian musician, Esther Smith, has clarified that she is not related to Chef Smith of Cookathon fame. She shared this information during an interview with Abeiku Santana on OKAY FM in Accra.
“My father is the one called Smith, who is from Cape Coast. My mother is from Akomadan. I’m an Ashanti because of my mother.”
When asked whether she has any close family relations with Chef Smith, she retorted, “Please, I’m not related to Chef Smith in any way. I don’t know him from Adam.”
Ghanaian Millennium Chef Ebenezer Smith claimed the title of Guinness World Record holder for the longest cooking marathon by an individual, with a purported time of 802 hours and 25 minutes, according to the citation he provided.
However, it has been revealed that Chef Smith’s record attempt was not officially recognized by Guinness World Records, and his claim was misleading.
Meanwhile, Esther Smith is returning to Ghana for two performances after a long hiatus from the local music scene.
She will take the stage at theBantama Pentecost Churchin Kumasi on August 25 and at the Perez Dome in Accra on August 30, 2024.
Ghanaian media personality and actress, Nana Ama McBrown, has voiced her disappointment over Chef Smith’s deceitful attempt to claim the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon.
Speaking on her OnuaShowtime programme on Onua TV, McBrown recounted her support for Chef Smith and her dismay upon discovering his fraudulent claim.
McBrown revealed that she had supported previous Guinness World Record attempts by Afua Asantewaa and Adu Sarfowaa, and felt compelled to support Chef Smith‘s cook-a-thon.
She was present at the event venue, where she was served banku as a gesture of her wholehearted support.
“At this point, I am pained. You know that I attended the other record attempts, including Afua and Adu Safowaa’s, so I had to pass through. One reason was that the premises belonged to my brother, and also, I was conducting McBrown’s kitchen around that area. When I got there, banku was ready, so I was served some of the food and I ate it,” McBrown explained.
She continued, “So, we were all waiting for positive results. We recently saw people congratulating him, only to later discover that it was a fake framework. So, until the verification came, we all thought he had won.”
Background
In a widely circulated video, Chef Smithwas seen tearfully kneeling alongside two emotional women, offering a heartfelt apology to the nation. “I have committed a great sin and I don’t even deserve to live anymore. Please forgive me and my entire family. I have wronged the entire nation,” he said in Twi.
Chef Smith admitted that while he had applied to attempt the longest cooking marathon by an individual, his application was not approved by Guinness World Records. Despite this, he proceeded with his attempt.
“I registered, but my application was not approved. I just wanted a chance to showcase the talent God has given me. I wanted the opportunity to demonstrate my passion for cooking and gain fame. I apologise,” he tearfully expressed.
Chef Smith mentioned several individuals in his apology, including the president, vice president, former President Mahama and his wife, and Nana Boro.
What Happened
Chef Ebenezer Smith conducted his cooking marathon from February 1 to March 6, 2024, at Amadia Shopping Centre in Spintex, Accra. On July 2, 2024, he claimed to have set a new record for the longest cooking marathon.
However, his claim was disputed by Guinness World Records, which clarified that they had not received an application from him, the certificate he presented was not valid, and the official record is still held by Alan Fisher of Ireland.
Chef Smith’s arrest during a press conference further raised questions. The sponsors of the event, Amadia Shopping Centre, explained that they had a contract with Chef Smith to support his attempt but were unaware of the press conference he organised.
Additionally, the Chefs Association of Ghana clarified that Chef Smith is not a registered member, despite his use of their logo during his attempt.
Brands and Marketing Manager at Amardia Shopping Center, David Caleb Gborglah expressed his frustration over Chef Smith‘s actions during a recent interview with KofiTV.
Gborglah emphasized the sacrifices he made for the cook-a-thon, noting that his efforts and personal compromises were in vain.
He recounted the rigorous work and the personal commitments he put aside, including risking near-accidents on the Accra-Tema Motorway and leaving his pregnant wife at home to address urgent issues related to the event.
“He knows the sacrifices I made to make this job a success. I remember an instance where I had to rush to the venue using a motorbike on the Accra-Tema Motorway due to an emergency call during the cook-a-thon. I even left my pregnant wife at home, and he was aware. I had no choice but to support and ensure everything was done well,” Gborglah stated.
While acknowledging Chef Smith’s apology, Gborglah insisted that legal actions must follow. “He has apologized, and we’ve heard it, but now it’s up to the police to do their job. Amardia Shopping Center has nothing more to say. It’s no longer about us; it’s about fraud, and fraud is punishable by law,” he affirmed.
Gborglah also expressed doubt about recovering the financial losses incurred by the company due to Chef Smith’s actions. “Chef Smith won’t be able to reimburse the losses we’ve suffered because of him. Have you seen his face during the apology? Have you looked at him?” he remarked.
Despite the public apology, there remains widespread outcry, including demands from celebrities, for accountability and consequences for Chef Smith’s actions.
Kwame Owusu Fordjour, known as Dr. UN, criticized Chef Smith for not consulting him before attempting the cook-a-thon. In a July 10, 2024, interview on Onua FM, Dr. UN revealed he only became aware of the controversy after being tagged in social media discussions.
Dr. UN advised Chef Smith to independently organize the cook-a-thon rather than seeking validation from Guinness World Records.
He believes creating a personal brand for the event could lead to greater long-term success and potentially turn it into an annual occasion.
Unaware of Chef Smith or the cook-a-thon saga until prompted by social media tags, Dr. UN suggested that had Chef Smith consulted him, he would have advised branding the cook-a-thon independently to surpass the Guinness brand’s influence.
According to Dr. UN, after a Guinness attempt, the organization moves on, but a personal brand could provide lasting benefits and continuity.
Dr. UN also mentioned offering Chef Smith a positive citation to enhance his reputation, proposing the involvement of a High Commissioner to present the award, thereby adding credibility.
“I didn’t even know anything about Chef Smith or the cook-a-thon saga. It was when someone asked me why people were tagging me about the issue before I went to do my research.
“I think Chef Smith should have consulted me before attempting his cook-a-thon.
“I would tell him to do the cook-a-thon on his own (without going under the flag of Guinness). He could have branded his cook-a-thon to be even bigger than the Guinness World Record brand.
“Because after the Guinness attempt, they would leave him, but if it was his own brand, he could continue with it and even make it an annual event,” he said.
“I would give him a positive citation which could give him a standing on his own. I would even bring a High Commissioner to present the award to him to give it some credibility,” he said.
Renowned Ghanaian filmmaker Leila Djansi has passionately called for Chef Smith‘s cancellation following his admission of fabricating a Guinness World Record. Taking to Facebook, Djansi expressed dismay at the public’s forgiving response to Chef Smith’s apology, arguing that it undermines accountability.
Describing him as a ‘psychopath’, Djansi criticized the way Chef Smith’s actions have diminished the achievements of genuine record holders. She voiced her frustration with social media’s leniency towards him and urged for stronger consequences, likening the situation to biblical principles where mere apologies should not absolve someone from facing repercussions.
Djansi emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for deceitful behavior to maintain integrity and prevent future incidents.
“I am appalled at how the majority of folks on Ghana social media are comforting and pampering this Chef Smith guy because he apologized! What’s wrong with y’all? Worried about your own skeletons, huh? This is why there’s zero accountability. Cancel this man… How do you fake a Guinness World Record? Trivializing the likes of Wally Funk, Zion Clark, Malala Yousafzai.
“He is a psychopath. How do you make a fool of an entire nation? And I am hearing he is also some sort of sexual deviant. No surprises there. He apologized, so what?
“Someone tarnishes your entire image and gets away with it because they apologized. What on earth! David sinned, confessed, and apologized, yet the child DIED. God took the child,” Leila Dzansi stated.
Ghanaian Chef Ebenezer Smith, also known as Chef Smith, recently admitted during an interview on GHOne that he falsified a Guinness World Record (GWR) certificate.
He confessed to altering an online GWR certificate in an attempt to claim the record for the longest individual cooking marathon, purportedly lasting 820 hours.
In the interview, Chef Smith asserted, “I earn GHC1,500 to 2000 as a chef. It’s too small for me. I have families to feed, wife and kids.”
When asked about his future plans, he expressed a willingness to undertake another cooking marathon under legitimate circumstances, pledging to give his best effort if given the opportunity.
Guinness World Records, however, clarified that they had no record of Chef Smith’s application or attempt for such a title, casting doubt on the authenticity of the certificate in question. The revelation sparked public criticism and scrutiny.
Chef Smith has since issued an apology for his actions.
Gospel artist Nacee has issued a public apology to Ghanaians for unintentionally endorsing Chef Smith‘s false Guinness World Record claim.
In a video shared on X by Eddiehub, Nacee is seen kneeling during an interview at Peace FM, expressing regret for using his influence to promote Chef Smith’s achievement without verifying its authenticity.
Nacee explained that he believed Chef Ebenezer Smith deserved more recognition during his cook-a-thon, prompting him to support and congratulate the chef.
However, Chef Smith later confessed to fabricating the GWR certificate, leading to public disappointment. Nacee pleaded with the public to forgive Chef Smith for his actions.
“Chef Smith has apologised. What he did was wrong, let’s all try and forgive him,” Nacee stated.
Chef Smith, who aimed to break a cooking record, conducted a 35-day cooking marathon from February 1 to March 6, totaling 802 hours and 25 minutes. He initially claimed to have set a new record but was later arrested for alleged fraud after his claim was disputed by GWR.
In an emotional interview with Serwaa Amihere on GH One TV, Chef Smith expressed remorse for deceiving the public and apologized for his actions.
He explained that his desire to showcase his cooking talent drove him to falsify the certificate, saying, “I render a very big apology on this platform, and I apologize to the world. I am deeply sorry for misleading everyone. I was driven by my ambition to earn a living, and I regret how it has turned out.”

Chef Smith‘s deception extended far beyond fabricating his Guinness World Record cook-a-thon certificate. In an extensive interview with Serwaa Amihere on Saturday, July 6, 2024, he confessed to a series of shocking lies and elaborate schemes.
Appearing visibly remorseful, Chef Smith disclosed the intricate details of his elaborate plot to deceive the entire nation with a staged cooking marathon. Among the deceitful actions, he admitted to several key deceptions:
Guinness World Records Application: Chef Smith confessed that he never actually applied for the Guinness World Records Longest Cooking Marathon. Despite appearing to follow the proper channels, he revealed that Guinness World Records was unaware of his cooking attempt. He studied their procedures but did not submit an official application, misleading Ghanaians into believing otherwise.
Forged Certificate from the International Master Chef’s Club: A certification prominently displayed on Chef Smith’s social media, purportedly from the International Master Chef’s Club, was confirmed by him to be forged. He admitted to fabricating the certificate, acknowledging that he is not a member of the club.
Using Adu Safowaa’s Reference Number: In a startling revelation, Chef Smith confessed to modifying Adu Safowaa’s reference number to create a fraudulent one for his Guinness World Records application. He altered her reference code without her knowledge, using it as the basis for his own application.
Mismanagement of Donation Funds: Chef Smith revealed that donations were made for his alleged Guinness World Record attempt. Sponsors financed expenses and expected to recoup their investment through donations sent via mobile money and bank accounts. However, there has been no update on the status of these funds, raising concerns about their management.
Chef Smith also cited financial struggles from his regular job, earning between GH₵1,500 to GH₵2,000 at times, as motivation for his fraudulent actions. His revelations have sparked widespread controversy and condemnation across social media.
Additionally, Chef Smith earlier claimed at a press conference in Accra that he holds the Guinness World Record for the longest individual cooking marathon, citing a remarkable duration of 802 hours and 25 minutes. However, verification with Guinness World Records (GWR) revealed that the certificate presented by Chef Smith was not authentic. GWR clarified that the current record holder for the longest cooking marathon (individual) is Alan Fisher, with a duration of 119 hr 57 min 16 sec.
In his interview, Chef Smith admitted to forging the certificate and acknowledged that GWR was unaware of his claim to the record. He apologized, expressing deep remorse and begging the nation for forgiveness: “I render a very big apology on this big platform, and I apologize to the world that I am so sorry. I don’t deserve to live. But in my quest to earn a living, it has landed me this way. I am sorry, and I beg the entire nation,” he expressed.
Ghanaians are turning the gun on GHOne TV presenter Serwaa Amihere for what they describe as “heartless” interview with embattled Chef Ebenezer Smith.
Ebenezer Smith, also known as Chef Smith, recently confessed in an interview to fabricating a Guinness World Record certificate.
He admitted to modifying a certificate found online from the Guinness World Records website, inserting his own details into it.
Chef Smith, who had long cited inspiration from Guinness World Records, explained, “They have numerous certificates on their website, so I simply chose one and edited it with my own name.”
He also clarified that he is not affiliated with the Ghana Chef Association or any other professional body, stating, “I’m not a member of the Ghana Chef Association. I do not belong to any organization. Everything is fake and a lie.”
Although Chef Smith remorsefully went on his knees and in tears apologised to Ghanaians on live TV, the host Serwaa Amihere seem unfazed.
This display of sensitivity from Serwaa Amihere has left many questioning if she has the moral authority to interview Chef Smith giving the fact that she has been in the news in recent times for having affair with a married man a day after his wedding.
Serwaa Amihere even went to question the very existence of Chef Smith asking “What about your life is real”?
Chef Smith watched on remaining silent.
This revelation follows a statement from Guinness World Records (GWR), which confirmed they were unaware of any attempt by Chef Smith to set a record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual. Madalyn Biefield, GWR’s Public Relations Manager, clarified, “No, this is not true at all. He does not hold a GWR title, and that certificate is not authentic.”
Mr. Agbovi, the General Secretary of the Chefs Association, expressed disappointment over the fake certificate and unauthorized use of their logo, noting, “You can call him a chef because he is a professional, but he is not a registered member of the Chefs Association of Ghana.”
Chef Smith had recently claimed to have set a record for the longest individual cooking marathon, citing an alleged confirmation email from Guinness World Records (GWR), but GWR has refuted any record attempt or confirmation.
The incident has sparked public outrage and scrutiny following the revelation of the likely fraudulent certificate.
Ghanaian Chef Ebenezer Smith, known as Chef Smith, recently admitted in an interview on GHOne that he had falsified a Guinness World Record (GWR) certificate.
Chef Smith confessed to altering an online GWR certificate to claim the record for the longest individual cooking marathon at 820 hours.
During the interview, Chef Smith expressed his need for psychological help, stating, “I need a psychologist. I am not well.”
When asked if he would attempt another cookathon, he confirmed his willingness, emphasizing, “I will embark on a second cookathon if it’s legitimate. I will give my all this time if given the opportunity.”
However, Guinness World Records clarified that they had no record of his application or attempt for such a title.
This revelation led to public backlash, highlighting the likely inauthenticity of the certificate.

During a press briefing at La Palm Beach Hotel on July 2, 2024, Chef Smith announced he had set a record for the longest individual cooking marathon, claiming to have cooked continuously for 820 hours. His manager, Benny, supported this claim, citing an alleged confirmation email from Guinness World Records (GWR).
However, GWR promptly clarified that they had no record of any application or attempt by Chef Smith to set a record. Madalyn Biefield, GWR’s Public Relations Manager, stated unequivocally, “No, this is not true at all. He does not hold a GWR title, and that certificate is not authentic.”
The incident has sparked public outrage as it became evident that the certificate Chef Smith presented was likely fraudulent.
Chef Smith has revealed that he did not register for a cook-a-thon attempt with the Guinness World Records (GWR).
In an interview with GH One TV he clarified his stance amid recent discussions about his involvement with the renowned record-keeping organization.
When asked why he proceeded with the cook-a-thon without approval, Chef Smith responded, “Cooking is not just my passion; it’s my calling”.
According to him, “I have read a lot about Guinness World Records and it’s an application process. When you apply, they will give you an application reference that would enable you to know who is the current record holder,” Chef Smith explained.
“I’ve read all that, and got to know the rules and guidelines, but I don’t have an application with Guinness World Records.”
In a statement released on Thursday, July 4, Amadia Shopping Centre announced a three-year partnership with Chef Smith to support his record-breaking attempt.
The shopping center, spearheaded by Mrs. Nana Ama Duodu, funded and organized the month-long cook-a-thon.
However, following the record attempt, Amadia’s management encountered challenges in communicating with Chef Smith regarding video uploads and responses from GWR.
The statement noted Chef Smith’s failure to inform Amadia Shopping Centre about a planned press conference to announce a potential GWR certificate, which violated the contract’s stipulations granting the sponsor the right of first refusal for post-event activities.
Despite multiple attempts to seek clarification, Chef Smith’s management remained unresponsive.
He confessed to modifying a certificate found online from the Guinness World Records website, inserting his own details.
When questioned about the forgery, Chef Smith explained that he had long admired Guinness World Records and decided to create a record for the longest individual cooking marathon, claiming to have cooked for 820 hours.
Chef Smith confessed his GWR attempt began with deception and continued at such.
“Everything started with lies and it has to end with lies,” Chef Smith stated.
However, despite Chef Smith’s assertions and claims from his manager of receiving a confirmation email from Guinness World Records (GWR), GWR clarified that they had no record of any such application or attempt from Chef Smith.
This revelation led to public backlash, as it became evident that the certificate was likely not genuine.
Madalyn Biefield, Public Relations Manager for GWR, emphasized, “No, it is not true at all. He does not hold the GWR title, and that is not our certificate.”
Chef Smith in a recent video apologized for his actions.

Additionally, Peter Agbovi, the General Secretary of the Chefs Association of Ghana, clarified that while Chef Smith is a professional, he is not a registered member of their association, further complicating his reputation within the culinary community.

She emphasized efforts made by law enforcement to address extortion threats prior to the video’s unauthorized circulation.

“I have committed a great sin and I don’t even deserve to live anymore but please forgive me and my entire family. I have sinned against the entire nation,” he said in Twi.
According to him, he went ahead to attempt breaking the record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual, albeit he did not get approval from the Guinness World Record.
“I registered but I wasn’t approved. I just wanted an opportunity to show the world the talent God has given me. I wanted the opportunity to show the world my passion for cooking and get fame. I am sorry,” he said amidst tears.
Chef Smith was arrested for fraud amidst the controversy but has been released.
Meanwhile, it has been revealed that Chef Smith is not to be a registered member of the Chefs Association of Ghana.
This disclosure came from Peter Agbovi, the General Secretary of the association, further complicating Chef Smith’s standing in the culinary community.
While acknowledging Chef Smith’s professional status, Agbovi clarified, “You can call him a chef because he is a professional, but he is not a registered member of the Chefs Association of Ghana.”
Ghanaian chef Ebenezer Smith, popularly known as Chef Smith, was detained by the Ghana Police Service shortly after announcing his new Guinness World Record for the longest individual cooking marathon.
The arrest took place just before a scheduled press conference.
Benny, Chef Smith’s manager, reported that a group, including musician Nana Boroo, approached the team claiming to have been part of the initial support group for Chef Smith’s cooking marathon.
“We were about to start our press conference at La Palm Royal Beach when a group, led by Nana Boroo, approached us,” Benny explained on Hitz FM. “
They claimed to have supported Chef Smith during his Cook-a-thon. Initially, we agreed to discuss the matter at the reception, but they later insisted on speaking with Chef Smith privately in their car, which we did not agree to.”
This disagreement escalated, leading to the involvement of the police and Chef Smith’s subsequent detention.
Chef Smith completed a marathon cooking session on March 6, 2023, achieving an impressive 820 hours of continuous cooking. He revealed this accomplishment during a press conference at the La Palm Beach Hotel on July 2, 2024.
The entrance to the conference room featured a banner that read: “Press Conference. Unveiling the New World Cook-a-Thon Record Holder. Millennium Chef Smith from Ghana with an incredible 802 hours, 25 minutes, dethroning Irish King, Alan Fisher.”
Despite these claims, the Guinness World Records official website still lists Alan Fisher as the record holder, with a time of 119 hours, 57 minutes, and 16 seconds.
Chef Smith made headlines after claiming to have set a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest cooking marathon by an individual, lasting 802 hours and 25 minutes.
During a press conference on July 2, 2024, he proudly displayed what appeared to be a Guinness World Records certificate to substantiate his achievement.
However, questions soon arose about the authenticity of the certificate.
Journalist Derek Edem Kojo investigated the claim and contacted Guinness World Records, where PR Manager Madalyn Bielfield confirmed that the certificate presented by Chef Smith was indeed fake.
Alan Fisher retains the official record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual, and Chef Smith’s claim has been debunked.

Chef Smith's reaction to 'breaking' Cook-a-thon record
Chef Ebenezer Smith, known for his attempt at a record-breaking cook-a-thon, has been discovered to have used the logo of the Chefs Association of Ghana without being a registered member, according to statements from the association’s officials.
During his high-profile cooking event aimed at achieving a Guinness World Record for the longest individual cooking session, Mr. Smith prominently displayed the association’s logo on his jacket.
This led to the assumption among viewers and attendees that he was affiliated with and endorsed by the Chefs’ Association of Ghana.
However, Peter Agbovi, the National Secretary of the Chefs’ Association, clarified that Mr. Smith is not listed as a registered member of the association.
Upon noticing the use of their logo during the event, the association promptly reached out to Mr. Smith to address the issue and advised him to officially join the association if he intended to use their logo.
“In his cook-a-thon attempt, we observed that he was wearing a jacket bearing our logo. We promptly contacted him to clarify that if he intended to use our logo, he must first become a registered member of the Chefs’ Association of Ghana,” Mr. Agbovi stated in an interview with GHOne TV.
Despite being notified of the requirement to rectify this misrepresentation, Mr. Smith reportedly did not complete the registration process or take steps to comply with the association’s guidelines.
“We did not feature his videos on our social media platforms during the event because he was not an official member, and he did not complete the registration process when we reached out to him. Following the cook-a-thon, we did not have any communication from him until yesterday, when he held a press conference,” Mr. Agbovi added.
The manager of Ghanaian chef Ebenezer Smith, known as Chef Smith, has asserted that he and his client received an official email from the Guinness World Records (GWR) office declaring him a record holder.
This statement follows GWR’s denial of Chef Smith’s earlier claim on July 2, 2024, that he had attained a world record.
Speaking to Accra-based Hitz FM on July 3, 2024, Benny, Chef Smith’s manager, stated that he possessed an official communication from GWR affirming Chef Smith’s record.
Benny indicated unfamiliarity with GWR’s contradictory statements and emphasized the existence of the email declaring Chef Smith’s achievement.
Regarding concerns over the authenticity of Chef Smith’s claim, Benny suggested awaiting further clarification.
However, as of now, Benny has not provided a copy of the purported email from GWR.
Chef Smith initiated his cooking marathon on February 1, 2024, at the Amadia Shopping Centre in Spintex, Accra, cooking for 820 hours until March 6, 2024, falling short of his initial goal of 1,200 hours.
On July 2, 2024, Chef Smith announced during a press conference in Accra that he had been recognized by GWR as a record holder.
However, GWR’s Public Relations Manager, Madalyn Bielfield, subsequently confirmed that Chef Smith’s presented certificate for the longest cooking marathon by an individual was not authentic.
The current record holder remains Alan Fisher, not Chef Smith.
Media personality Dr. Randy Abbey expressed disappointment with the media regarding Chef Smith‘s claim to have broken the cook-a-thon record with what later turned out to be a fake certificate.
Chef Smith declared on July 2, 2024, that he had set a new record with a cooking marathon lasting 802 hours and 25 minutes.
Initially presenting a certificate purportedly from Guinness World Records during a press conference, investigations later revealed it to be fraudulent.
Dr. Abbey, host of Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, criticized the media for not verifying Chef Smith’s claims before extensive coverage, highlighting potential damage to Ghana’s reputation.
He described the incident as a “July fool,” questioning how Chef Smith could deceive the nation without consequences.
Dr. Abbey emphasized the importance of fact-checking in today’s era of instant verification, lamenting incidents similar to those involving figures like Dr. UN in the past.
Chef Smith, embroiled in controversy over his claim of a world title following a cook-a-thon challenge, has been revealed not to be a registered member of the Chefs Association of Ghana.
He elaborated that the association first became aware of Chef Smith’s activities through social media posts, where they noted their logo on his attire, prompting concerns.
Efforts to encourage Chef Smith to register as a member were reportedly unsuccessful, leading to the decision not to feature him on the association’s platform.
Regarding the recent controversy surrounding Chef Smith’s purported Guinness World Records certificate, Agbovi expressed dismay, stating, “It’s unfortunate that it’s a fake Guinness World Records certificate. Once you are a qualified chef, we give you respect. It was heartbreaking to see a colleague chef come out with a fake certificate, and we don’t know if it’s his own doing. We have not been able to speak with him yet.”
In light of these developments, Agbovi emphasized the significance of proper registration and adherence to guidelines within the culinary profession.
“Given the circumstance,” he added, “Chef Smith cannot claim to be a member of the Association.”
Ghanaian radio personality Kwami Sefa Kayi expressed shock and disappointment over the recent controversy involving Chef Ebenezer Smith, also known as Chef Smith.
The chef falsely claimed to have set a new Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual, stating that he cooked for 802 hours and 25 minutes.
Chef Smith made this announcement on July 2, 2024, during a press conference where he displayed a certificate, supposedly from Guinness World Records. However, it was later revealed that the certificate was fake.
On his Kokrokoo show on July 3, 2024, Kwame Sefa Kayi addressed the issue, expressing his confusion and dismay.
He remarked, “Those who follow the Guinness Book of World Records cook-a-thon, I learned a man called Chef Smith had a press conference telling Ghanaians that he had won the cook-a-thon but that is not true. But I’m really pained about it, why would you do that?…this is unfortunate. This is sad.”
The legitimacy of Chef Smith’s claim was questioned by Derek Edem Kojo, a journalist from GhOne TV.
In response to his inquiry, Madalyn Bielfield, PR Manager for Guinness World Records, confirmed that the certificate displayed by Chef Smith was not genuine and that the current record holder is Alan Fisher.
Bielfield stated, “No, this is not true at all. He does not hold the GWR title, and that is not our certificate.”
A Ugandan food vendor who attempted the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon, Dorcus Basheba, also known as Mama D, has reacted to the hoax involving Ghanaian Chef Smith who claimed to have broken the world record.
Chef Smith made the announcement during a press conference at La Palm Hotel in Accra on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.
He declared himself the new Guinness World Record title holder for the longest individual cooking marathon, claiming to have achieved a time of 802 hours and 25 minutes.
“I am deeply humbled and honoured to announce that I am now the new world record holder for the cook-a-thon,” Chef Smith proclaimed during the conference.
But Guinness World Records (GWR) has refuted Ghanaian chef Chef Smith’s claim of holding the longest cooking marathon title, declaring the certificate he presented as fake.
Madalyn Bielfield, the PR Manager for Guinness World Records, confirmed that the current record holder is Alan Fisher from Ireland, not Chef Smith.
“No, this is not true at all. He does not hold the GWR title and that is not our certificate,” Bielfield stated, affirming the doubts raised by many regarding the authenticity of the certificate displayed by Chef Smith.
Reacting to this, Mama D, the founder of mama d’skeytchen, has urged people not to “believe everything you read on social media without proof.”
She added, “I await my feedback from @GWR , until then…”.
She attempted the GWR attempt on 23rd December 2023. She cooked for 121 hours.
Chef Smith, who was claimed to be the Guinness World Record (GWR) holder for the longest cooking marathon by an individual, has been released from police custody without charges, as reported by 3news.com.
His manager, Benny Benjamine, was also released after spending a night at the La Police station.
Chef Ebenezer Smith, widely known as Chef Smith, reportedly achieved an impressive 802 hours and 25 minutes of cooking to set the record.
They were taken into custody by officers at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel on Tuesday, July 2, shortly after Chef Smith announced to the press that he had set a new Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.
According to Benny Benjamine, Chef Smith’s manager, the arrest was instigated by Ghanaian musician Nana Borro, who claimed to have sponsored Chef Smith’s cook-a-thon challenge and demanded the return of his sponsorship.
Benjamine stated that Nana Borro, along with an official from Amadia Shopping Centre, brought the police to their press conference, leading to the arrest.
Social media users have condemned Ghanaian Chef Smith for his attempt to set a new world record for the longest cooking marathon, criticizing his fraudulent claims.
Many expressed deep disappointment with Chef Smith for his deliberate attempt to deceive the public. Others also criticized him for engaging in deceitful behavior that has brought international embarrassment to the nation.
The media also faced criticism as the public faulted journalists for spreading the story without verifying or conducting proper due diligence to confirm Chef Smith’s claim of winning the title.
Background
GhOne TV’s recent report disclosed that Chef Smith from Ghana does not hold the current record for the world’s longest cooking marathon.
According to GhOne TV, this information was verified through an email from Guinness World Records (GWR).
The media outlet clarified that the certificate displayed by Chef Smith was not authentic but a counterfeit intended to deceive the public for recognition.
This clarification came after Edem Kojo queried the GWR team via email to verify Chef Smith’s claim as the new record holder for the cook-a-thon.
“No, this is not true at all. He [Chef Smith] does not hold the GWR title and that is not our certificate. The longest cooking marathon (individual) is 119 hours, 57 minutes, and 16 seconds and was achieved by Alan Fisher (Ireland) in Matsue, Shimane, Japan, from September 28 to October 3, 2023,” the email read, as reported by GhOne TV on their X page.
This revelation comes after Chef Smith’s press conference at La Palm Beach Hotel on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, where he formally celebrated his supposed significant feat. The situation intensified when Nana Boroo demanded to talk with Chef Smith in their car, a proposal the management did not accept.
A journalist present at the event described the scene: “There was a sudden commotion, and we were pressured to leave the room by the management team. Chef Smith abruptly exited, and we noticed the presence of police and soldiers. The entire building was secured. While Faila’s attempt fell short of Guinness World Record (GWR) criteria, Chef Smith’s ongoing endeavour, set to conclude on March 6, 2024, is poised to be a groundbreaking achievement.

Chef Faila, aided by assistant Chef Malik Eric, sought to outdo Fisher’s achievement.

A Ghanaian chef, known as Chef Smith, is on the verge of breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual. He has already cooked for over 260 hours, surpassing the previous record of 227 hours, held by another Ghanaian chef, Faila Abdul-Razak.
Chef Smith, whose real name is Kwame Smith, started his cook-a-thon on February 1, 2024, at the Amadia Shopping Centre in Accra, and plans to finish on March 6, 2024. He aims to cook for a total of 360 hours, or 15 days, to set a new record.
He has been preparing various dishes from different regions and countries and has received support and donations from the public, celebrities, and politicians. He has also been broadcasting his cook-a-thon live on his Twitter account and YouTube channel.
Chef Smith says he is not doing his cook-a-thon to undermine Chef Faila, but rather to challenge himself and showcase his talent and love for cooking. He also says he applied for the Guinness World Records approval in September 2020, and that his cook-a-thon is not a sudden or spontaneous attempt.
“It’s very unfortunate how people like to jump to conclusions and in my case, for instance, I’m not enjoying the public support because Ghanaians think that my cook-a-thon attempt is just to undermine Faila’s record.
“That is far from it, what I’m doing is not to rival Faila or anyone at all. It is an ambition that I started pursuing last year after getting the inspiration from Nigeria’s Hilda Baci who did hers in May. I applied in July but was turned down.
“God being so good, I was given the green light in September last year and it’s just a coincidence that the time I’m ready is coming right after that of another Ghanaian,” he told Graphic Showbiz in an interview on Tuesday, February 6.
Chef Smith is a product of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management of National University, Philippines, and an international executive chef.
He says he was inspired by Nigeria’s Hilda Baci, who held the record with 93 hours in May 2020, before it was broken by Ireland’s Alan Fisher, who clocked in 119 hours and 57 minutes in June 2020.

However, amidst his pursuit, he finds himself facing criticism, with some perceiving it as a competition following Chef Faila’s recent 227-hour cook-a-thon.
Expressing deep emotions, Chef Smith clarified that his culinary journey was not a recent decision and urged fellow Ghanaians to empathize with his aspirations.
He emphasized that he commenced his cooking endeavor prior to Chef Faila’s, clarifying that the intention was not to compete but rather to fulfill a personal dream.
In a poignant message post on Tiktok, Chef Smith revealed the emotional toll of negative feedback he is receiving, stating “I started this journey not today but i dont know why Ghanaians keep insulting me. Please understand me , i applied this before Faila eveb started hers. Just forgive me and let me achieve my dreams, this isnt a challenge but a dream😭😭😭🙁 am even crying now guys . Please suport my dream and dont let me cry and fail,” he added.

Notable individuals like Afua Asantewaa and Chef Faila have made headlines with their record-breaking endeavors, while Executive Chef Ebenezer Smith, also known as Millennium Chef, quietly joins the ranks with his unique cookathon attempt.
Here are some intriguing details about Chef Ebenezer Smith’s ongoing cookathon:
Executive Chef Ebenezer Smith is also recognized as Millennium Chef.
Application History: He first applied for approval from the Guinness World Records in July 2023 but faced initial rejection.
However, his second attempt in September 2023 was successful, securing approval for February 2024.
Commencement Date: The cookathon officially began on February 1, 2024.
Initial Duration: Originally planning to break the record by cooking non-stop for 360 hours (equivalent to 30 days).
Location: The cookathon is taking place at Amadia Shopping Center on the Community 18 Road of Spintex.
Duration Extension: Chef Smith extended his initial 360-hour plan to an impressive 1200 hours, spanning 50 days. This decision was a strategic move to surpass the unofficial record set by a Canadian-based Nigerian, Beauty Obasuyi, who cooked for 448 hours.
Despite these remarkable efforts, Chef Smith’s cookathon has not garnered the expected attention, with online users attributing the lack of enthusiasm to the perception that there was no need to compete with a fellow Ghanaian in the same realm of world records.
It’s worth noting that the current record for the longest cookathon is held by Irish chef Alan Fisher.
As Chef Smith continues his culinary marathon, it remains to be seen if he will emerge victorious and secure a place in the prestigious Guinness World Records.
