Zimbabwean court reinstates opposition candidates to run in forthcoming general election

Twelve candidates from the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change have been given the green light by Zimbabwe’s Supreme Court to run in this month’s general election, overturning a High Court decision that they had registered after the deadline.

Following the unanimous decision of the judges, four candidates from smaller opposition parties were also reinstated on the vote; however, the justification for the decision has not yet been made public.

After the tumultuous registration day on June 21, there have been numerous legal proceedings during the pre-election period.

Candidates continued to register even after the scheduled cutoff time of 16:00.

Numerous applicants were unable to register due to payment issues and other logistical issues.

On August 23, a general election is scheduled.
