At least 39 people died and nine got hurt in a fire that started in the basement of a shop in the Chinese city of Xinyu.
The news on tv said the fire started on Wednesday afternoon in the city in Jiangxi province.
Video from the state-backed Global Times showed smoke coming out of buildings and people jumping out of windows.
President Xi Jinping wants to look into the fire.
He also asked for serious action to prevent more deadly incidents in the country.
On Wednesday, another fire happened, just a few days after a fire in Henan province killed 13 children in a school dormitory. Seven workers were later taken in by the police.
In November, a fire at a coal company office in northern China’s Shanxi province killed 26 people and injured many more who were taken to the hospital.
Last month, there was a big explosion at a barbecue restaurant in north-western China. 31 people died and the government promised to work on making workplaces safer all over the country.
Last April, a fire in a hospital in Beijing caused the death of 29 people and made survivors jump out of windows to get away.
