Authorities have warned that there is a high risk of intense bushfires in New South Wales. This is because the state is experiencing very hot temperatures and strong winds, which are causing over 60 fires to burn.
Australia’s Bureau of Meterology (BOM) reported that many cities on the east coast experienced unusually high temperatures during spring on Tuesday. Sydney, the capital of New South Wales (NSW), was predicted to have its hottest day in September on Wednesday. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecasted a temperature of 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit).
Senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury, who works for BOM, said that there is extremely hot weather in NSW this September. She also mentioned that there are dangerous fire conditions and strong winds. The video was posted on X, which used to be called Twitter.
According to a statement on Facebook by NSW Rural Fire Service, there were 65 fires burning in New South Wales as of Wednesday afternoon. Almost one-third of these fires were not under control.
NSWRFS commissioner Rob Rogers said Tuesday that the current risk is the most dangerous we have encountered since the Black Summer fires in 2019. These fires were very destructive and caused a lot of harm, killing many people and animals and burning a large area of land.
On Tuesday, the NSWRFS put in place a complete ban on fires in Sydney and the nearby areas. This includes barbecues, campfires, and even activities like welding.
The alerts for NSW are given as there are also bushfires happening in Queensland, Tasmania, and parts of central Australia near the tourist town of Tennant Creek. On Monday, the authorities said that the fire in Tennant Creek had burned over a million hectares of land in the Northern Territory.
In simpler words: Last month, the Australasian Fire Authorities Council (AFAC) said that there could be more bushfires in Australia. They especially mentioned the Northern Territory, Queensland, and New South Wales as places with higher risks. They believe this is because of climate change.
AFAC CEO Rob Webb said that the changes in weather this season are causing a higher chance of bushfires. Most of the country will have less rain and higher temperatures than usual this spring. Australians should be careful and aware of the risk of bushfires in their area, no matter where they live.
It happened after the country had a very dry August, and the climate scientist said it was the warmest winter ever on his Facebook video.
Australia is expected to have very hot months coming up soon. On Tuesday, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) announced that an El Niño weather event was happening. This usually leads to a hotter and drier spring and summer, and there is a higher chance of bushfires.
Karl Braganza, who works for the Bureau of Meteorology’s climate monitoring team, said that this summer will be hotter than usual and hotter than the past three years. This was reported by CNN’s regional affiliate 9News.
The weather agency predicts colder weather in New South Wales in the next few days. The extreme heat and risk of fires are expected to move towards the north and west by the end of the week.
