Two ex-students won their case against the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. They accused the staff of not properly investigating claims of sexual assault.
Alyse McCamish, 26, and Sydney Feder, 25, chose not to keep their identities a secret.
They took the college to court in Central London for not being careful.
The judge concluded that the college did not thoroughly look into or address their claims of being sexually assaulted by another student.
Two women went from their houses in the United States to go to a college in Cardiff when they were young. McCamish, from Tennessee, went to Wales at the age of 19 after passing an audition in Chicago. She claims that she was sexually attacked by another student in 2016, but he denied the accusation.
In the trial, she said that when she told the college about the assaults, the college staff didn’t take her seriously. She accused the college of blaming her for being a victim and lying shamelessly. She asked the staff to keep her away from the person who assaulted her and told the court that she did everything she could to avoid him. Feder, from Connecticut in the United States, came to Wales to study at the college when she was 18. She claims that she was assaulted in a dressing room at the college in 2017 by the same person who assaulted Ms. McCamish in 2016.
On Thursday, the judge, Recorder Halford, decided that Ms McCamish and Ms Feder won their case. He discovered that the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama did not respond properly to the sexual assault allegations. Now, Ms McCamish is creating a film about the experiences of other students who have gone through similar situations in different parts of the UK. It was revealed during the trial that she has spoken with other former students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. It is anticipated that the compensation for Ms McCamish and Ms Feder will be discussed in a future court session.
