The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, called Hamas a group that fights to protect its land, which will likely anger Israel.
Hamas, including its military branch, is considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the US, the EU, the UK, and other countries.
Over 1,400 people died when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7th. The majority of those killed were innocent civilians living in communities near the Gaza border.
Erdogan gave a strong speech in Turkey’s parliament and said he would no longer go to Israel.
He said he met the Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu and that Netanyahu had taken advantage of Turkey’s kindness.
Last month, the two leaders met at a meeting in New York organized by the United Nations. This meeting was seen as an important indication that their countries are getting along better.
