Parts of northern Gaza no longer habitable – UN agency

We just listened to Thomas White, who is in charge of UNRWA in Gaza. He visited the northern part of Gaza and the area around Gaza City.

Israel told people to leave the area when its troops started to move in October.

“It was creepy going from a busy city to a city with damaged roads and buildings,” he said on BBC Radio 4.

“You can drive through entire neighborhoods where all the buildings are broken and there are hardly any people outside. ”

He said that in some places where there is not much damage, there are some signs of life. A few people are sitting in front of their shops and in their doorways. But the city is still very quiet and feels strange.

The UN group also went to Jabalia in northern Gaza to give out aid supplies.

“Many people felt very relieved to finally have some help,” White said.

He said parts of northern Gaza are too damaged to live in.

Other areas seem to be mostly unaffected, but they don’t have electricity and only a little water.

“All the usual services and things that people do. ” “He said that they are basically not there,” .
