Off-duty British soldier meets untimely end in Kenya

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced the tragic death of British soldier Major Kevin McCool, who lost his life while off duty in Kenya.

The incident occurred during a motorcycle trip away from the base, where Maj McCool was unfortunately attacked.

MoD officials have informed the soldier’s next of kin but have decided not to disclose further details regarding the circumstances of the incident.

Major McCool, aged 32, passed away on November 29, prompting Defense Secretary Grant Shapps to lead tributes, describing the loss as “tragic.”

“It’s clear from the tributes of those who knew him that Maj McCool was an exceptional person and an exceptional soldier, loved and respected in equal measure, who served his country with distinction.”

Shapps emphasized Maj McCool’s exceptional qualities, noting the outpouring of love and respect from those who knew him, highlighting his distinguished service to the country.

Commissioned from Sandhurst in August 2014, Major McCool served in various regions, including Europe, the Middle East, the Falklands, and Africa.

The MoD praised his glittering operational record, citing his successful completion of some of the military’s most challenging courses. The eulogy also highlighted his legendary fitness, exceptional endurance, and infectious enthusiasm.

Described as a “big family man,” Major McCool’s commanding officer paid tribute to his integrity and professionalism.

Recounting a poignant memory during operations, the officer remembered Maj McCool’s dedication, even after minimal sleep, expressing a readiness to deploy into challenging situations.

The officer emphasized the bright light that has gone out among their ranks, expressing the sentiment that Major McCool will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
