Moldova has reportedly summoned the Russian ambassador in Chisinau following media reports that the embassy had installed listening devices on its rooftop, according to the Moldovan foreign ministry.
It comes in the wake of this week’s claims from Insider and Jurnal TV in Moldova that 28 satellite dishes and other communication equipment had been installed on the rooftop of the Russian embassy and an adjacent residential structure that was used by embassy staff.
The Moldovan foreign ministry said in a statement that it is investigating the nature and scope of these espionage activities as well as the activity of the individuals mentioned in the investigation so that it can respond to the situation “appropriately and promptly.”
”We deem all actions of espionage and foreign interference in domestic matters of the Republic of Moldova that directly threaten our state’s sovereignty and national security to be wholly unacceptable”, it continued.
Oleg Vasnetsov, the Russian ambassador in Chisinau, was invited to a meeting on Tuesday “to provide clarifications and explanations on the situation,” the ministry said.
The conclusion of the report stated that “depending on further developments, the Moldovan authorities will consider several options for a response.”
