Giving his keynote Conservative Party conference speech following the 45p tax rate cut U-turn earlier this morning, Kwasi Kwarteng began by saying: “What a day.
“It has been tough, but we need to get on with the job in hand.”
The chancellor continues: “No more distractions, we have a plan and we have to get on and deliver it.”
Prime Minister Liz Truss is in the front row of the audience watching on.
Pressing on with his speech, Mr Kwarteng says: “Our plan will deal with the challenges of today to thrive tomorrow – to get Britain moving.”
He adds: “While we all believe in growth, we as Conservatives also believe that people should keep more of what they earn.
“That isn’t radical, that isn’t irresponsible, it is a deeply held belief that we should all believe as Conservatives.”
Noting that “the path we were on was clearly unsustainable”, the chancellor describes the UK as being in “slow managed decline”.
“We couldn’t sit back and do nothing,” Mr Kwarteng adds.
He continues: “I refuse to accept it is Britain’s destiny to fall back into middle league status.”
But the chancellor acknowledges that his tax-cutting mini-budget caused economic turmoil, saying: “I know the plan we put forward 10 days ago caused a little turbulence. I get it.”
