Man who killed Toronto police officer scheduled to testify today in murder trial

Today, the man who is accused of hitting a Toronto police officer with his car almost three years ago will speak in court at his trial for murder.

Umar Zameer  pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder of Det. Jeff Northrup. He says he’s innocent.

Northrup passed away on July 2, 2021 after he was hit by a car in a parking garage under Toronto City Hall.

The court heard that Northrup and his partner, who were not wearing uniforms, were in the garage to look into a stabbing.

Zameer was not the one who stabbed anyone, he was with his pregnant wife and their young son.

The lawyers say Zameer is responsible for Northrup’s death because he moved his car in a certain way when the police were close by. But Zameer’s lawyers say it was an accident and Zameer and his wife didn’t know the two people were police officers.
