Man set to receive sentence for killing Irish teacher

A man who was found to have killed school teacher Ashling Murphy in Ireland is going to court on Friday to find out his punishment.

A 23-year-old woman was stabbed many times in the neck while she was out for a run near the Grand Canal in County Offaly on 12 January 2022.

The death of Ms Murphy made many people very upset. There were ceremonies held in Ireland and the UK to remember her.

Jozef Puska, aged 33, from Lynally Grove in Mucklagh, County Offaly, was found guilty by all the members of the jury at a court in Dublin last week.

The jury only took a couple of hours to decide after listening to three weeks of evidence.
Puska, who is from Slovakia, said he didn’t do it.

In court, he said he was trying to help Ms Murphy after she was attacked by another man who also stabbed him.

After the jurors made their decision, the judge said there was evil in the courtroom.

He said he was happy they didn’t waste any more of their important time with Puska’s nonsense, because that’s what it was.

Ms Murphy’s family, who was a talented folk musician, cried in the courtroom when the judge talked.

Her mother Kathleen had a picture of her daughter who was killed in a frame.
