Four people died and seven were injured when a man went on a stabbing spree in a northern Illinois town on Wednesday, according to the police.
A 22-year-old man is being held by the police and they are asking him questions, said Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd. She said one person who was hurt is still very sick.
“I feel sorry for the families who are going through a difficult time and have lost someone,” Redd told reporters.
She said that the Rockford Police got a call about someone needing medical help at 1:14 in the afternoon. Police and paramedics were called again afterwards.
“We think there are no other suspects running away or out there right now,” Redd said. “At the moment, we don’t know why this person did such a terrible crime. ”
Not everyone who was found at different places in the city was stabbed, and no one was shot, according to Redd.
The police in Rockford said that five people were hurt at first. Cori Hilliard, who works for the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, said on Wednesday that two more people were injured.
Three people lost their lives in those places. The fourth person passed away at a hospital.
The police found out that the victims were a 15-year-old girl, a 63-year-old woman, a 49-year-old man, and a 22-year-old man. Their names were kept secret.
Redd advised people in the neighborhood to check their home security cameras for any evidence of the attacks.
Rockford has around 150,000 people and is about 90 miles northwest of Chicago. There was violence on Wednesday after a teenage worker at a Walmart in Rockford was stabbed and killed in the store a few days earlier.
“Today, we are very upset about another terrible act of violence against innocent people in our community,” said Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara. Now that we have caught the suspect, he said, “Our main focus is making sure that the people in our community who were hurt by this violence get the help they need to heal and get better. ”
The mayor wrote on the city’s Facebook page that the police from different areas are working on different crime scenes to figure out what happened and stop it from happening again.
The police arrested a person suspected of breaking into a home after being called to the scene by someone.
“The girl ran away from him,” said Caruana about one of the survivors. “She was injured with a knife in her hands and face. ” She is very sick. A kind person stopped to help her. He got stabbed a few times. He is getting looked at.
Eric Patterson, who lives on the street, said he is having a hard time understanding the violence that is happening.
“You can’t make sense of this,” Patterson told the Rockford Register Star. “It’s like playing a video game, but real. ” It doesn’t make sense. It’s similar to Grand Theft Auto. I’m going to hit the mailman with my car. I’m going to hurt a few people over there. “I’m going to enter that house over there. ”
Another person who lives here, Vanessa Hy, told WREX-TV in Rockford that seeing the arrest felt unbelievable, like something from a movie.
“Suddenly, we heard police running up on both sides of the house and shouting ‘Stop. ‘” Hy told the station. “They went into the backyard and a few minutes later we saw them bringing the person they thought did it out of the driveway with handcuffs and he had a lot of blood on him. ”
Cassandra Hernandez, a neighbor, told the Rockford paper that she is friends with one of the people who got hurt.
“You never thought this would happen here,” said Hernandez. “Our neighbors are really nice. “
