Brazil is now back where it should have always been, on the continent. Africa has a lot of chances to succeed and a big capacity to grow.
Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, also known as Lula, made these comments while speaking in South Africa at the Brics yearly meeting that he is currently participating in.
The leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are having a meeting in Johannesburg, which is the commercial center of South Africa.
Lula made a hidden criticism toward his right-wing predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, who did not visit Africa during his time as president.
Lula became Brazil’s president in January 2023 after a fiercely fought election. The experienced politician with left-leaning views also served as the leader of the country from 2003 to 2010. During this time, he visited Africa multiple times.
He already went to Cape Verde for a short time this year.
The leader of Brazil has focused on improving relationships with other countries in the “global south” as an important part of the country’s foreign policy.
During my first two terms, I focused on Africa as a top priority. Lula said, “I visited Africa 12 times and went to 21 different countries. ”
Brazil has a foreign policy that aims to include others, but according to reports from the Brazilian press, the country doesn’t want to increase the number of members in Brics, even though China and Russia want this.
After attending a meeting in South Africa, the president of Brazil will continue his trip to Africa. He will visit Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe, where he will participate in a meeting of countries that speak Portuguese.
