Labour calls for ‘independent investigation’ on Williamson bullying claims

Ed Miliband, the shadow climate secretary, is now speaking to Sophy Ridge on Sunday about bullying allegations in the Conservative Party.

He says there needs to be an “urgent, independent investigation” into what exactly Rishi Sunak knew about the Gavin Williamson bullying claims.

Mr Miliband says: “What did Gavin Williamson do – and what are the implications of that?”

Asked if this behaviour is normal in Westminster, he says: “Let’s be honest, parliament has got a massive job to do to change our culture.

“I’m not denying to you that this might have happened at some point over the last few decades… but they point is, we’ve got to change.”

Mr Miliband says the problem is the Mr Sunak appears to have known Mr Williamson was “engaging in this behaviour”.

“The fact the former chief whip was making a complaint about this suggests how extreme the behaviour was,” he adds.

“It really is a matter of judgement and the basis on which Rishi Sunak makes decisions.”

The conversation now turns to the COP27 climate summit.

“The big picture here… is that the UN has told us that the promises made in Glasgow haven’t been met,” he says.

“It is now cheaper to save the world than to destroy it,” he says, claiming that renewable energy is becoming much cheaper.
