Italian trains kill five rail workers

A fast-moving train crashed into railway workers near a station in Italy, causing the death of at least five people.

The workers, who were between the ages of 22 and 52, were replacing a part of a track near the city of Turin in the northern area. Unfortunately, they lost their lives during this task.

They were working on the train tracks between Turin and Milan when a train without any passengers passed through Brandizzo station. The train was said to be traveling at a speed of 160km/h (100mph).

Mayor Paolo Bodoni said that they are currently conducting an investigation, according to the Italian media.

Two workers were not hurt but were taken to the hospital to be watched closely. The person driving the train felt very scared after something bad happened, so they were given help right away. After a while, they were allowed to go back to their own house. He will likely be asked later about the accident.

Italian railway network (RFI) said they are very sad about the incident. It also expressed its sympathy to the families of those who died.

Mr Bodoni said the incident was very scary and a very big sad event.

Italian reports said that workers were replacing around 10 meters of track when a train with no passengers and carrying twelve wagons passed through Brandizzo station very quickly.

Some people were pulled for a long distance along the track.

The mayor of Brandizzo, a little town near Turin, said he will wait for the inquiry’s result, but he can’t rule out a communication mistake.
