Four men detained after hearse driven onto football field during game

Following the abandonment of a football game due to a hearse being driven onto the field, four men have been detained.

On Friday, a hearse and a Subaru drove onto the pitch and began performing donuts, ending the friendly match between the non-league teams Gateshead and Dunston.

Around 8.20 p.m., the event took place at Dunston’s UTS Stadium in Tyne and Wear.

Additionally, flyers were tossed from the cars and onto the pitch. At halftime, the game was halted.

Northumbria Police confirmed on Saturday that four people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Three men, two aged 19 and one aged 32, were arrested on suspicion of affray, while a fourth man, 41, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit criminal damage.

All four are still in police custody.

A spokesman for the force said: ‘Disorder will not be tolerated in the community, and anyone found to be involved will be dealt with robustly.

‘Officers would like to thank members of the public who have come forward to assist the investigation to date.

‘People are also reminded to continue to avoid any speculation online and on social media as enquiries continue.

‘Police will remain in the area throughout the weekend – and those with concerns and information are encouraged to speak with an officer on duty.’

Anyone with information or footage of the incident is asked to get in touch with Northumbria Police.
