Faculty member at UNC-Chapel Hill killed, suspect taken into custody

A teacher at the University of North Carolina was shot and killed on Monday. This caused the campus to be locked down for three hours.

At around 1:02 p. m, the police sent a message telling everyone to stay where they were because someone had fired a gun near Caudill Laboratories.

According to court records, Tailei Qi was arrested for first-degree murder and having a gun on a school property, but the search was short.
Qi got caught by the police at about 2:38 in the afternoon. The police said that they gave the okay and ended the lockdown at around 4:14 p. m They told people not to go to Caudill Labs because investigators are still looking for evidence there.

UNC Chancellor Kevin M. is the leader of the University of North Carolina. Guskiewicz said someone died but did not say who because the school needed to tell their family first.

According to papers from the court, the person who got harmed is Zijie Yan. On UNC-Chapel Hill’s website, they are listed as an associate professor in the applied physical sciences department. The documents were found by WTVD, an ABC affiliate.
I am very upset and hurt by the shooting that happened today in one of our campus buildings. This is a place where we do important work of teaching, mentoring, and research every day. We feel for the family of our colleague, as well as anyone close to the victim or affected by this violent incident.

The school said that classes and events will not happen until Wednesday.
UNC’s Police Chief, Brian James, explained that the weapon used in the shooting has not been found yet and the investigation is still ongoing.

“He said during the press conference that we want to collect all the evidence to find out what happened and why it happened. ”

The leader of North Carolina is the Governor. Roy Cooper made a statement saying that he promised to provide assistance from the state to aid in the investigation.
Cooper said, “Starting a new semester in this sad way is terrible. The state will offer help to support the UNC community. ”

Guskiewicz understood that the students and faculty went through a very upsetting event and told them to use the school’s support services to feel better.

“He said the community should join forces. ” “These events are happening sadly all over the country. “
