Face recognition and video selfies to be used as Tinder verification tools

Tinder is requiring users to verify their identity with a selfie video in order to prevent users from being catfished.

To be “Photo Verified,” users’ video selfies must pass a Liveness Check and 3D Face Authentication.

The Liveness Check looks at the face in your video to check that it was actually shot by a live person and wasn’t digitally edited or otherwise changed.

3D Face Authentication detects your face in your video selfie and your profile photos, and uses facial recognition technology to check whether the person in your video selfie is the same person as in your profile photos.

Your video selfie is deleted and is not added to your profile, but Tinder will keep two screenshots from your video selfie for the purposes of auditing and managing this feature.

How to complete Photo Verification with a video selfie on Tinder?

  • Open the Tinder app.
  • Tap the Explore icon.
  • Tap ‘Try now’ in the Photo Verified module.
  • Acknowledge the Photo Verification prompts.
  • Take a video selfie.
  • Done! Your Photo Verification is under review.

Additionally, Photo Verified members can ask their match to do the same before chatting. They can also opt to only receive messages from other Photo Verified members.

‘Tinder daters consistently tell us that photo verification is one of their most valued safety features. The tool provides one more way to help members better assess the authenticity of their match,’ said Rory Kozoll, SVP of Product Integrity at Tinder.

‘For our 18-25 year old members, being Photo Verified gives them a 10% higher chance to match,’

In early tests, more men have been likely to complete Photo Verification through the introduction of video selfie. Knowing this, Tinder will now prompt all new members to Photo Verify when they create a profile.

Tinder Gold members will be able to filter their ‘Likes’ for Photo Verified members only.

How to chat with only Photo Verified Members on Tinder?

  • Open the Tinder app.
  • Tap the profile icon and then tap the Message Settings icon.
  • Scroll to ‘Control Who Messages You’ and toggle on ‘Photo Verified Chat’.
  • Done! Only Photo Verified users can message you now.

To ensure you’re swiping on the most recent version of someone. in the coming months, Tinder will ask all members to update to the latest version of Photo Verification which includes a video selfie.

The free Photo Verification feature will roll out today to Tinder’s global users while the ability to restrict messages to ‘Photo Verified Members’ will be rolled out in the ‘coming months’.
