The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, told the leaders of China, India, South Africa, and Brazil that their group, Brics, will make the world have multiple power centers.
Speaking at the summit in Johannesburg through video, Mr. Putin expressed his opposition to the influence held by the G7 and other organizations led by the West.
He can’t come in person because there is a warrant for his arrest in Ukraine.
The Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that Brics should grow more because it would make the way the world is governed more fair.
Countries like Iran, Ethiopia, and Algeria have shown interest in becoming part of the group. But Brazil has warned against using the group as a substitute for the G7.
The press conference that was going to happen later has been canceled because the leaders are currently having private discussions.
