Archbishop of Canterbury fined over £500 for speeding

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has been fined over £500 and received three penalty points on his driving license for exceeding the speed limit in London.

Last year, he was recorded driving at 25mph in a 20mph zone while traveling to his official residence at Lambeth Palace in his Volkswagen Golf.

The 67-year-old admitted the offense in writing and was sentenced at a private hearing in a magistrates’ court.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, was prosecuted through the single justice procedure after being caught by a speed camera on October 2.

He pleaded guilty online and was ordered by the Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court to pay a £300 fine, a £120 victim surcharge, and £90 in legal costs. Additionally, three penalty points were added to his driving license.

The archbishop, who appeared at the House of Lords on the same day to criticize the government’s Illegal Migration Bill, was unaware that the case would be dealt with in court, according to a spokesperson from Lambeth Palace.

The spokesperson said: “He has tried to resolve this and pay the fine three times. He has all the paperwork to prove that he has tried to pay.

“Admin errors seem to be causing problems.”
