Seven innocent people, including an elderly woman and five young kids, were reportedly killed in central Somalia when a military attack intended to hit extremist fighters went wrong.
The Somali government said it killed three important al-Shabab members in a village called El Garas.
Sonna, the Somali National News agency, said that the attack was well-planned and had a strong impact on al-Shabab.
The government found and followed the three people who were killed. They went into a regular person’s house to hide from the attack.
However, the government refused to accept blame for the harm caused to non-military people.
Al-Shabab group put bombs in a regular person’s house, and this caused the deaths of people who did nothing wrong, said Abdirahman Yusuf, the deputy information minister of Somalia, in an interview with the BBC.
Ahmed Nur Mohamud is the husband of a 60-year-old woman named Kaha Warsame. She, along with her grandchildren, died in the attack. He said he was about 1 kilometer (or 1,100 yards) away from the house when the bombing occurred. He was with his second wife and their children.
“I attempted to give them a call, but their phones were turned off,” Ahmed Nur remembers. I was scared to go inside my family’s house at 3 in the morning because there were soldiers from the government there. I reached the house late and found out that the government had taken the dead bodies with them.
I saw two bombs hit my family. He said that one person was on their hut and another person was on the goat’s shelter.
People told the BBC that they saw the Somali army taking dead bodies out of the house. In addition, a government official told the BBC that the Somali soldiers came to the place after the bombing.
Ahmed Nur wants to see the bodies of his wife and grandchildren so he can have a sense of closure.
We are regular people and have never had any connection or involvement with al-Shabab. I want to have the bodies of my family so that I can bury them properly. “I want to be paid for the damages done to my family member,” he said.
