A kindergarten stabbing incident in China’s Guangdong province has claimed the lives of six individuals, including three children.
Reports indicate that a 25-year-old man named Wu, who has been apprehended by the police in Lianjiang, was responsible for the attack.
A teacher and two parents were among the victims while one person sustained injuries. The authorities have labeled the incident as a case of “intentional assault” but have not provided further details regarding the motive.
The incident occurred early in the morning, at around 7:40 local time, precisely when parents were dropping off their children for summer classes.
The expeditious arrest of the perpetrator took place at 8:00. The area surrounding the kindergarten has been cordoned off, as confirmed by a nearby storeowner.
This tragic event has triggered shock and outrage as videos of the attack circulated on Chinese social media platforms. Such knife attacks have become distressingly familiar in China, given the restrictions on firearms.
Since 2010, there have been at least 17 reported incidents of knife attacks in schools, colleges, and universities, with ten of them occurring between 2018 and 2023. Notably, China witnessed an incident where a chemical spray was used to harm a classroom of 50 children.
Instances of school-related knife attacks in China have shared common characteristics, including male perpetrators with grudges against society.
While similar patterns can be observed in mass killings in other countries, experts suggest that there may be additional factors contributing to the rise in mass stabbings in China.
