25% of Gaza’s population is a step from starvation – UN

At least 576,000 people in the Gaza Strip are very close to not having enough food. A senior UN aid official said this to the Security Council. If we don’t do something, a lot of people could go hungry.

“Not much can happen as long as fighting continues and there’s a chance it could move into the crowded areas in the south of Gaza. ” Ramesh Rajasingham, who works for the UN, said again that we want a ceasefire.

One out of every six children under the age of two in northern Gaza is very malnourished and not growing properly. Almost everyone in the Palestinian enclave, which has 2. 3 million people, depends on food aid that is not enough to survive.

Rajasingham said that it’s very hard for the UN and aid groups to bring even the basic things into Gaza because there are many things getting in the way, like closed crossings, rules about where they can go, and difficult screening processes. Also, there is fighting, broken roads, and bombs that haven’t exploded yet.

Israel wants to help the people in Gaza, but they can only give as much aid as the UN and other agencies can handle.

Israel has been straightforward about its rules and decisions. “There is no maximum amount of humanitarian aid that can be sent to the people of Gaza,” Miller said to the Security Council.
‘Israel needs to do better’

The United States of America The US asked Israel to keep border crossings open for aid to reach Gaza and to open more crossings. “Robert Wood, who represents the US at the UN, spoke to the Security Council. ”

He said Israel needs to do more. “We ask Israel to make sure aid can be delivered safely and securely by improving deconfliction procedures. ”

The World Food Programme is prepared to increase our help quickly if there is a truce, said WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau to the Security Council.

“But right now, there is a high risk of not having enough food in Gaza because we can’t bring in enough supplies, and it’s very difficult for our staff to work there,” Skau explained.

The fighting in Gaza started when fighters from Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7 people died, about 1,200 people were killed and 253 hostages were taken, as reported by Israel. Israel has attacked Gaza by air and ground, and around 30,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to health officials in Gaza.

“Guyana’s UN Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett said that starving people on purpose as a way of fighting is against the law, and Guyana is against those who are doing this to the people in Gaza. ”

Israel’s attack on Gaza “is hurting all the innocent people in Palestine,” said Algeria’s UN Ambassador Amar Bendjama to the Security Council. “When we don’t speak out, we allow people to harm and deprive the Palestinian population. “
