20,000 railway employees to strike on three additional days in July

Next month, additional rail strikes have been scheduled.

The RMT union has indicated that some 20,000 railway workers will go on strike on 20 July, 22, and 29.

The ongoing national rail issue is one of the reasons for the strikes.

Due to a protracted disagreement over wages, employment, and working conditions, union members have been engaging in industrial action.

“This latest phase of action will show the country just how important railway staff are to the running of the rail industry,” RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch stated.

‘My team of negotiators and I are available 24/7 for talks with the train operating companies and Government ministers.

‘Yet quite incredibly neither party has made any attempt whatsoever to arrange any meetings or put forward a decent offer that can help us reach a negotiated solution.

‘The Government continues to shackle the companies and will not allow them to put forward a package that can settle this dispute.

‘Our members have now voted three times to take strike action over the last 12 months – the most recent of which coincided with having the full details of the substandard offer from the rail operators.’

Members of the union have also voted for further strike action over the next six months.

RMT re-balloted members working for 14 train operating companies, and on an average turnout in each company of nearly 70%, over 90% of votes cast backed continuing with strike action.

Aslef train drivers working for Avanti West Coast were due to strike on Sunday, July 2, however, the strike has now been suspended, following talks with management.

On June 3 London’s biggest train stations were left deserted as 12,000 train drivers walked out for 24 hours across 15 train companies, affecting around 40% of trains, according to the Rail Delivery Group.

Some firms ran no trains at all.
