15-year-old arrested for stealing street light batteries

A fifteen year old boy has been sentenced to two months imprisonment at Kampiringisa Rehabilitation Centre after being found guilty of stealing two Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) solar street light batteries.

The juvenile who is also a street kid was convicted on Wednesday by the City Hall grade one magistrate Valerian Tuhimbise after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

Prosecution says that the juvenile and others still at large stole two solar street light batteries on Jinja Road, Nakawa in Kampala on September 25, 2019. Court also heard that the batteries valued at Shs2.8m belonged to KCCA.

The magistrate ruled that the convict who is a minor, committed the offence with the help of some adults who are yet to be apprehended, adding that the offence is such a regrettable one.

“He however needs a sentence which can make him reform by going to Kampiringisa rehabilitation Centre for two months,” said the magistrate, who added that the sentence serves as a deterrent to the offender and other juveniles engaged in lawless activities.
