The Kurdish Internal Security Force said that Turkish airstrikes in northeastern Syria killed a minimum of 11 people in areas controlled by the Kurds. This was the Turkish military’s reaction to a bomb attack carried out by Kurdish militants in the capital city of Turkey.
The Kurdish Security Force, called Asayish, shared on their official website that Turkey attacked the areas near a camp for displaced people and some villages.
Asayish said that eleven people were killed, which included five regular citizens and six members of the Internal Security Forces.
Eight regular people and two members of the Kurdish security forces were injured, the report states.
Turkey’s Defense Ministry said on Friday that it destroyed 30 targets and killed multiple Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants in northern Syria. They claimed they were acting in self-defense and justified the strikes using Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
The strikes happened because of a bombing in Ankara. The PKK, a group that has been fighting for a long time and is considered a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union, claimed responsibility for the attack.
On Sunday, militants took control of a car and caused an explosion outside Turkey’s Interior Ministry building, injuring two police officers. One civilian was also killed in the attack.
On Sunday, the Turkish Defense Ministry said their fighter planes destroyed 20 PKK targets in northern Iraq as a response to the attack.
According to Ankara, the PKK trains fighters who want to separate from Turkey and carries out attacks on Turkey from their bases in northern Iraq and Syria. In these areas, a Kurdish group associated with the PKK controls large parts of the land.
“At a news conference on Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that the security forces and intelligence have found out that the terrorists came from Syria and were trained there during the investigation of the recent incident. ”
Fidan said that the Turkish Armed Forces would attack all PKK and YPG facilities in Iraq and Syria.
“The armed forces will respond strongly to the terror attack and the attackers will regret their actions,” Fidan stated.
The Kurds, who don’t have their own country, are the largest group of people in Turkey that are not Turkish. They make up about 15% to 20% of the total population, according to Minority Rights Group International.
Some parts of Kurdistan (a region that does not have its own government) are recognized by Iran and Iraq. Iran has a province called Kordestan, while Iraq has a self-governing region called Kurdistan Regional Government or Iraqi Kurdistan.
Recently, Turkey has been regularly doing missions to stop the PKK inside its own country and also crossing into Syria.
In November 2022, the city of Ankara accused the PKK of setting off a bomb in Istanbul. The attack resulted in the deaths of six people and caused injuries to many others.
In the mid to late 2010s, there were many sad attacks in Turkey. These happened because of the war in Syria, which made people feel unsafe. The war affected both Syria and Turkey as they share a border.
