Let’s stop bribing the referees – New Edubiase Owner appeals to club administrators

The owner and financier of New Edubiase United, Abdul Salam Yakubu, has called on club administrators to desist from bribing referees, stressing the importance of preserving the integrity of the game.

In recent times, both the Ghana Premier League and lower divisions have faced mounting criticism over poor officiating.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Salam Yakubu accused some club officials of attempting to manipulate match outcomes by influencing referees with bribes. He urged stakeholders to uphold fair play and protect the credibility of Ghanaian football.

“Club administrators bribe referees, and that is the problem of Ghana football,” he told Asempa FM.

“We are always trying to lobby referees to win our home games, and it’s because the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is not taking good care of the referees, but I believe that we, the club administrators, must stop lobbying referees for the interest of the game.

“We do that and sometimes even forget the main actors, who are the players,” he added.

Meanwhile, after a five-week break following the tragic passing of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Frimpong, also known as Nana Pooley, the Ghana Premier League is set to resume this weekend at various venues.

  • Truncate the League or consider me out – Abdul Salam Yakubu tells GFA

The President of New Edubiase United, Abdul Salam Yakubu has ruled out any move to participate in the Division One League if fixtures are congested by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) should the league resumes after July 31.

The current season has been suspended due to the Coronavirus pandemic and with the government set to review the ban on July 31, talks are going on between the GFA and clubs on whether to continue or truncate the season.

According to him, any move by the GFA to continue the season by playing consistently during mid-week and weekends will be rejected by him.

Speaking in an interview, Abdul Salam Yakubu said, “There is no league that I am going to take part that is played consistently on Wednesdays and Sundays. There is no sponsorship and we are punishing the players. We the club administrators have to leave our jobs and be following the team around, he told Happy FM.

“There is no proper structured league in the world that plays consistently on those days. The proper leagues are played on weekends so the fans come also come in their numbers to watch”.

Abdul Salam joins a list of club administrators who have called for the season to be truncated amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

“For now we have to cancel the league, so the clubs can begin to prepare ahead of the new season”.

The GFA is currently engaging its stakeholders on the future of the 2019/20 football season and says it will announce a decision on June 30.

  • New Edubiase United president Abdul Salam wants season to be cancelled

New Edubiase United president Abdul Salam Yakubu is arguing for the 2019/20 football season to be nullified.

Like the rest of the world, all football activities in the country have been put on hold due to coronavirus pandemic.

Yakubu, whose side play in the National Division One League, does not see how the season would be completed in time before the start of the next campaign in August.

“The GFA have to give us time to prepare our team when the pandemic is over to play the second round, because you can’t tell us to resume immediately (play the following week),” he told Asempa FM.

“We need at least two weeks to a month to prepare and play the league of which time is not on our side because we want to synchronize with the European calendar.

”Clubs also are not disciplined as regards fielding unqualified players which need to be addressed because it will affect the league.

“The 2019/20 football should be voided for us to go to Congress.”
