Media personality, Afua Asantewaa, is standing her ground against online critics who have accused her of seeking attention through her recent sing-a-thon attempt.
The controversy arises as netizens question Asantewaa’s credentials and celebrity connections, arguing that her newfound fame stems solely from the attention garnered during the Guinness World Record (GWR) endeavour.
Asantewaa, who claims to have interviewed a myriad of Ghanaian celebrities, ranging from actors and actresses to musicians and other top personalities, faced a barrage of criticism after her sing-a-thon attempt catapulted her into the spotlight.
Some online users labelled her interviews as “rubbish” and questioned her right to be in the limelight.
The internet sensation responded defiantly, asserting that she was already a well-known journalist who had established connections with various celebrities long before her sing-a-thon venture.
In defence of her reputation, Asantewaa argued that the notable personalities present during her marathon singing event were not merely there out of curiosity but because she had cultivated relationships with them through her journalism work.
“I am a journalist, and I have interviewed almost all the actors, musicians, and celebs who came to show me love at the Akwaaba Village, so it’s not like I was seeing them for the first time,” Asantewaa declared in response to the backlash.
She further emphasised that her sing-a-thon was not a quest for fame but an expression of her existing popularity.
“First of all, sing-a-thon was not for fame because I already had it. I meet celebrities all the time, and all those who passed through the Akwaaba Village during my singing marathon were people I encounter often,” she explained.
Despite acknowledging that the sing-a-thon brought her increased recognition, Asantewaa remains adamant that she was already famous in her own right.
As the debate continues to swirl online, it remains to be seen whether Afua Asantewaa can successfully navigate the tumultuous waters of public opinion and maintain her standing within Ghana’s celebrity circles.
