Retired footballer Prince Tagoe has revealed that he played a pivotal role as an executive producer for two notable music acts: the Hiplife trio Praye and Reggae/Dancehall singer Stonebwoy. Speaking to Nana Romeo on Accra 100.5 FM’s Ayekoo Ayekoo on June 13, 2024, the former Hearts of Oak player recounted his experiences with these artists, highlighting both positive and challenging moments.
Praye
Tagoe’s journey with Praye began due to his close relationship with Big J, a member of the trio. After returning from Saudi Arabia, he noticed that Praye had several unfinished songs in the studio. Big J informed him of the costs required for mastering and releasing the tracks, which Tagoe decided to cover. He also financed their album launch at the Golden Tulip, an event attended by several prominent figures, including Stephen Appiah and Randy Abbey.
He explained that investing in the album involved significant promotional efforts to ensure its success. The trio’s decision to dress like Saudi Arabians during an award acceptance was inspired by Tagoe, who sent them the outfits from Saudi Arabia. Despite his extensive support, Praye eventually announced a new manager, Kiki Banson, at their album launch. Although Tagoe felt sidelined, he maintained a cordial relationship with the group before gradually stepping back.
Stonebwoy
While playing for Hoffenheim FC, Tagoe discovered Stonebwoy through a YouTube freestyle video featuring rappers Opanka and Yaa Pono. Impressed by Stonebwoy’s talent, he reached out and later met him in Ghana. At that time, Stonebwoy had parted ways with Samini’s High Grade and was facing challenges. Tagoe believed in Stonebwoy’s potential and provided extensive support, including lending him his cars for shows, which helped Stonebwoy maintain a high-profile presence.
Tagoe was instrumental during Stonebwoy’s rise, including his first Artiste of the Year win at the 2015 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. Tagoe ensured Stonebwoy had a comfortable experience and celebrated the victory with him. He praised Stonebwoy’s ambition and work ethic, noting that Stonebwoy had confidently predicted the impact of winning the award on his career.
Despite their past collaboration, Tagoe mentioned that his current relationship with Stonebwoy is “cool but not really cool.” He noticed that Stonebwoy had unfollowed him on Instagram, although he continues to follow Stonebwoy. Tagoe respects Stonebwoy’s decision and remains proud of the artist’s achievements.
Go Higher
Tagoe also facilitated the connection between Stonebwoy and Ivorian footballer Emmanuel Adebayor, helping to reshoot the “Go Higher” music video at Adebayor’s house after issues with the original. Tagoe contributed his Porsche Panamera for the video, further demonstrating his commitment to supporting Stonebwoy’s career.
Reflections
Tagoe expressed no regrets or disappointment about his experiences, emphasizing that he helps others without expecting anything in return. He views life’s journey as one where everyone passes through various people who contribute to their success. Tagoe’s passion for music was nurtured during his high school years, influenced by talented seniors like Kofi Nti and performances by artists such as Afriyie Wutah.
Stonebwoy’s 2024 Artiste of the Year Win
Stonebwoy was recently declared the Artiste of the Year at the 2024 Ghana Music Awards, sponsored by Telecel Ghana. During his acceptance, Stonebwoy asserted that this win marked his third Artiste of the Year victory, referring to the unannounced 2019 award, which was left unconfirmed due to a stage incident with Shatta Wale.
