At least ‘two people killed’ and ‘multiple trapped’ as Greek bridge collapses

Based on reports, at least two persons have perished after a portion of a bridge collapsed on a highway in western Greece.

Rescuers can be seen in video posted to social media at the scene of the accident in Patras, which happened close to a Roma settlement in the Haradro neighbourhood.

According to reports from the local media, a number of Roma were killed when a building collapsed on them while they were seeking refuge from the heat under the bridge.

There are fears a number of people are trapped under the large slabs of concrete.

‘We can confirm that the bridge collapsed. We are operating at the scene. There are people trapped but we don’t know the exact number,’ the fire brigade said.

Rescue efforts are ongoing and dozens of firefighters can be seen sifting through the rubble.

Several ambulances are already at the scene, while firefighters and police officers have been deployed from Athens to help.

The bridge located at the entrance to the Ring Road has been under construction for two years.

It remains unclear how the incident happened.
