Residents complain Toronto Intersection smells: ‘You have to keep your windows closed on a bad day’

Toronto residents living near the intersection of King Street West and Strachan Avenue are complaining about a lingering foul stench.

“It smells like sewage,” said Ann Riness, who lives nearby, to a CBC Toronto reporter. “It’s definitely tough to live here. You have to keep your windows closed on a bad day.”

The longtime resident added the smell first came up over a year ago.

Among the many comparisons, the word “poop” floated around often to describe what people were smelling. Another resident likened the stench to rotten eggs and sulphur.

The strong odour is only one facet of Toronto’s alleged lack of upkeep.

A separate CBC article noted that certain parts of the city have been falling apart. They listed scattered construction debris, numerous potholes, overflowing garbage, and broken water fountains as recurring problems they’d see across Toronto.

While the city itself has claimed these are isolated and temporary issues, its citizens disagree.

“You walk […] in New York City years ago and it was disgusting. Now are looking [at Toronto] the same way,” said Alistair Francois to CBC reporters outside of Toronto’s city hall.

There’s a municipal election set for Toronto on Oct. 24.
