London: Woman develops post-partum sepsis after giving birth to twins, nearly loses all of her limbs

A courageous mother has shared her harrowing experience of giving birth to twins, which quickly turned into a life-threatening ordeal resulting in the loss of most of her limbs.

Following a healthy natural birth, 29-year-old Khedidja Teape from southwest London suffered from post-partum sepsis, narrowly escaping death’s door.

Despite the odds, the mother of four survived, albeit with the amputation of both legs, her left arm, one hand, and some fingers.

Today, Khedidja courageously speaks out to shed light on this deadly illness and educate others about its symptoms.

Khedidja says: “If I hadn’t called an ambulance when I did, doctors said I might have died in my sleep. People need to be aware how dangerous sepsis is if they don’t act fast.

“Sometimes I ask, ‘Why me?’ But I’m mostly thankful that I’m still here to be a mum to my kids.

“Now, I can carry my twins in the crook of my right arm, and lift them up too. My family are happy to have me home.”

In 2023, Khedidja, an entrepreneur running a craft business, and her partner of 12 years, Shawn Ayton, 32, a plumber, were eagerly anticipating the arrival of twins.

Khedidja says: “We were already parents to a boy and girl, Zackai and Zanaya-Li, and weren’t looking to have any more children.

“It was a huge shock, but we were excited to extend our beautiful family.”

“The pregnancy went smoothly and when I was five months along, we discovered we were having a boy and girl, again.

“When I was three weeks away from my due date, we had a baby shower with family and friends. I was anxious and excited for the twins to arrive.”

In April 2023, Khedidja experienced a prolonged, natural labor at St George’s Hospital in London, lasting several days. She successfully delivered her son, Zakari, followed by her daughter, Zalaysia, just 45 minutes later. Both babies were declared healthy.

Khedidja says: “Holding my new babies in my arms, I’d never felt so proud. I looked at Shawn and said, ‘I did it!’

“Zakari and Zalaysia were beautiful, and I loved them already. I couldn’t wait to introduce them to their siblings.”

The following day, the family received the all-clear and was discharged from the hospital. Back home in London, Khedidja, like any new mother, felt exhausted caring for her newborns. However, while she was busy breastfeeding, she began to experience severe stomach pains.

Khedidja says: “The next day the midwives came over for their daily check-up. I told them my stomach was hurting still and I didn’t feel well.

“They blamed it on me giving birth and told me to take painkillers. But after that, the pains got worse.

“Soon, I was throwing up green and yellow vomit. I had diarrhoea and body aches. I lost my appetite, couldn’t eat and I was shivering constantly.

“Shawn looked after the twins in the night as I struggled in pain. A week after I gave birth, I felt like I was going to die.

“Even though the midwives told me I was fine, I listened to my gut feeling and called an ambulance.”

Twenty minutes later, paramedics arrived and rushed Khedidja back to the same hospital where she had given birth.

Upon arrival, her heart rate was dangerously high, her blood pressure was dropping, and she drifted in and out of consciousness.

Khedidja says: “They ran CT scans and tests; trying to figure out the problem. I didn’t know what was going on.

“But I ended up in intensive care, and doctors guessed that I had an inflammation in my wound from having the babies.

“Then a doctor said I might have an abscess inside my womb, and that they needed to do surgery to drain it.

“Everything happened so fast, but before I knew it, I was being wheeled into the emergency theatre.”

When Khedidja next opened her eyes, Shawn was by her side, who informed her that she was battling a Strep A infection which had developed into port-partum sepsis.

Doctors stated that if she hadn’t called an ambulance, she wouldn’t have survived the night.

Khedidja says: “In disbelief, I looked down at my body. All my limbs, and my nose were black.

“In shock, it took me days to accept it. I didn’t understand why it had happened to me.

“Shawn brought the kids to me, and I had the twins lay on my chest. I wished I could just go home.”

In the days that followed, Khedidja became mute, unable to communicate with anyone, and experienced hallucinations. Doctors feared that the sepsis had spread to her brain, but fortunately, she eventually regained her ability to speak.

In May 2023, a team of doctors braced Khedidja and her family for the worst.

She says: “They told me they had to amputate my limbs. My heart sank.

“I begged them not to and to see how much I healed first, but they said they had no choice because the skin was dead.

“I kept pleading, but they wouldn’t listen. For the next few months, I visited the rehab centre and met other amputees who helped me feel better.

“They told me my life wouldn’t stop. I became a bit optimistic after that.”

After giving the green light to the hospital to go ahead, Khedidja signed consent forms for the amputation in August 2023 last summer.

Khedidja says: “They decided to do it in two parts. The first one they amputated my legs, left arm, one hand, and the fingers on the other.

“When I woke up, I couldn’t feel anything. I was glad it was over, and that I’d survived.

“Two weeks later, I had another operation. They made the stumps and amputated more of the dead parts of my left arm.

“This time after waking, I was in agony. The drugs didn’t work as well as the last time.

“But I told myself every day I needed to stay strong to get home to my family.”

In October of that year, Khedidja was transferred to a rehabilitation center, where she resided. Each day, she underwent rehabilitation, engaging in exercises and adjusting to her altered physique. During weekends, she was permitted to return home and spend time with her family.

Khedidja says: “I worked so hard in the week, getting stronger. In time, I began learning how walk with sockets in.

“And after the New Year, I received my fitted prosthetics.

“After nearly four months at the centre, I was able to move back home. Now, I can walk independently, and I’m doing amazing.

“My twins are healthy and happy and are 1 years old. I can even carry them now in the crook of my arm.

“My life may have been flipped upside down, but at least my babies, and my older kids, still have their mum.

“I want more awareness to be raised about sepsis.

“Cancer is so well known, but people don’t realise how dangerous sepsis is too, and how many people die.

“It destroyed my body, and nearly killed me. If you have experience any of these symptoms, call 999 immediately.

“Not even health professionals knew. Listen to your gut.”

Khedidja has launched a GoFundMe as she raises funds for advanced prosthetics limbs, maintenance of wheelchairs, therapy, mobility aids, adaptions to her home and support for her family.

  • Foods that help you conceive twins

Foods that help you conceive twins

Conceiving twins is primarily influenced by genetic factors and luck, with many variables beyond your control.

Nonetheless, there are some dietary choices that might potentially enhance your chances of conceiving twins, although they are not guaranteed to be effective.

It’s worth noting that these strategies may be more effective if you have a family history of twins or if you are of an older age, both of which can increase the likelihood of releasing multiple eggs. Here are some foods to consider incorporating into your diet:

    1. Dairy Products: Some studies have observed a higher incidence of twins among individuals who consume dairy products compared to those following a vegan diet. This effect could be linked to growth hormones given to cattle, which may stimulate ovarian activity and increase the likelihood of multiple pregnancies.
    2. Cassava: In another study, yams, specifically cassava, were associated with a higher occurrence of multiple births. Like dairy products, cassava may trigger double ovulation, potentially leading to twin pregnancies.
    3. Beans: Beans are rich in fiber and protein, making them a valuable dietary choice for supporting ovulation. They are also an excellent source of folic acid, a crucial nutrient for conception and a healthy pregnancy.
    4. Avocados: Avocados are packed with essential nutrients such as Vitamin K, potassium, and folate, which contribute to overall well-being. Additionally, avocados provide a significant amount of folic acid, which may enhance the chances of giving birth to twins.
    5. Sweet Potatoes: Sweet potatoes are known to stimulate ovarian activity, possibly leading to the release of more eggs and an increased likelihood of having twins.

It’s crucial to understand that attempting to boost your chances of having twins through dietary choices is not foolproof and may not be suitable for everyone. Before making any significant changes to your diet or attempting to conceive twins through dietary means, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider or fertility specialist for personalized guidance and recommendations based on your individual circumstances.

Twins on the run after allegedly murdering friend at Berekum

A tragic incident unfolded at a pub in Berekum, situated in the Bono Region, involving twin brothers and their friend, resulting in the death of 16-year-old Alhassan Sulemana.

According to reports, the altercation occurred on Saturday night and reportedly began as a misunderstanding between Alhassan and the twins, identified as Farouk and Harus.

Eyewitness Mohammed Sofian, who was present at the pub, recounted hearing loud shouts and went to investigate. He discovered Alhassan and the twins engaged in a heated argument. Mohammed intervened and advised them to stop, then left the premises. Unfortunately, upon his return, he found that Alhassan had been stabbed by the twins using a pair of scissors.

Tragically, Alhassan succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at Berekum Holy Family Hospital. Witnesses observed the twins fleeing the scene after the incident.

The case has been reported to the police by the deceased’s brother, and an investigation is underway to bring justice to Alhassan’s untimely demise.

  • Try these 5 foods if you want to have twins

Try these 5 foods if you want to have twins

Age, height, and family history are a few variables that may improve the likelihood of having twins if you want them.

Your food, nevertheless, might also play a significant part in making it possible.

According to studies, certain foods have been known to increase the chances of conceiving twins if eaten regularly.

    Here are five of them:

    1. Foods rich in folic acid

Folic acid also known as folate is a soluble vitamin that has many functions in the body. It is a supplement recommended for pregnant women as it promotes fetal growth and reduces the risk of birth defects in newborns.

Foods that contain folic acid include avocado, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, spinach, legumes, asparagus, liver, pasta and breakfast cereals.

Some studies have found some connection between folic acid and increased chances of conceiving twins.

It is believed that 40% of women who take extra folic acid while trying to get pregnant may have a slightly higher chance of giving birth to twins. It is however advised to consult your doctor for the recommended dosage.

    2. Maca Root

Over the years, Maca root also known as Peruvian Ginseng has proven to be beneficial in boosting fertility. This fertility treatment which also helps balance and regulate women’s hormones is said to increase chances of getting pregnant with twins. It can be consumed by adding the dried or powdered form to your smoothie, tea or yoghurt.

    3. Yam

Yams are a rich source of progesterone and phytoestrogens which may lead to hyper ovulation thus increasing your chances of multiple births. Hyper ovulation occurs when women release more than one egg during ovulation.

It is no surprise that Igbo-Ora, a town located in Oyo State, Nigeria has an unusually large number of twin births earning it the nickname “Twin Capital of the World”.

Studies show that the high amount of yam in their diet was a reasonable cause of twin or multiple births contributing to a twin birth rate four times higher than the entire global average.

    4. Dairy products

A study in 2006 showed that women who regularly consume dairy products e.g milk, yoghurt, butter are five times more likely to have twins.

This may be as a result of Insulin Growth Factor (IGF), a growth protein that is present in cow milk and can also be gotten from other animal products.

When a woman consumes a larger quantity of dairy products, she is prone to release more than one egg during ovulation and this increases her chances of conceiving non-identical twins.

    5. Cassava

Cassava like yam is also known for increasing fertility. It also helps increase the chances of getting pregnant twins due to its hyperovulation properties.

According to experts, natural hormones in cassava may trick the brain into thinking there is insufficient estrogen, causing the brain to naturally release more of a hormone called gonadotropin, which increases the ovulation rate.

Cassava can be consumed in the form of garri, tapioca, lafun etc.

  • The mystery of Igbo Ora: How a Nigerian town became the ‘Twin capital of the world’

The mystery of Igbo Ora: How a Nigerian town became the ‘Twin capital of the world’

Imagine a town where almost every household has at least one set of twins. Where the sight of two identical faces is so common that no one bats an eye. Where the local greeting is “Iba oloye”, meaning “greetings to the twins”.

In the heart of southwestern Nigeria lies this town. A place where the birth of twins defies statistical norms and captivates the imagination of visitors and researchers alike.

Welcome to Igbo Ora, a serene community nestled in the Oyo State, known as the “Twin Capital of the World.” Here, an astonishingly high rate of twin births  has earned the town a reputation that stretches far beyond its borders.

Igbo Ora is located about 80 kilometres north of Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria. It has a population of about 278,514 people, according to a 2017 estimate based on the 2006 census The town is also home to the Oyo State College of Agriculture and a High Court of Justice. But what makes Igbo Ora stand out from other towns is its remarkable reputation as the “twin capital”.

A woman with her twin baby girls | Image Source: BattaBox (YouTube)

According to a study conducted by a British gynaecologist, Patrick Nylander, between 1972 and 1982, the average number of twins per 1000 live births in southwest Nigeria was 45 to 50, compared to the global average of roughly 13 twins per 1,000 births.

Igbo Ora’s unique status has attracted attention from scientists, anthropologists, and curious individuals eager to unravel the secrets behind this extraordinary occurrence. The town’s reputation has grown so significant that it has become a tourist attraction in its own right, drawing visitors from far and wide who yearn to witness the marvel of twin births first-hand.What lies behind this statistical anomaly, one may ask.

Various theories attempt to explain the remarkable prevalence of twins in Igbo Ora. Some, including the locals, attribute it to the diet of the local population, rich in yams, a crop believed to contain properties that stimulate ovulation and increase the chances of multiple births. Others point to the genetic predisposition of the Yoruba people, the dominant ethnic group in the region, suggesting that certain genes prevalent in this community contribute to the high twinning rate.

However, beyond these theories, Igbo Ora’s fascination with twins runs deep within its cultural fabric. Twins are considered a divine blessing, with locals celebrating their arrival through unique ceremonies and festivals.

Families often regard them as a sign of prosperity and good fortune. As a result, the town has become a nurturing environment for twins, where they are cherished and embraced by a community that takes immense pride in their presence.

The town’s inhabitants have even developed distinct names for twins, reflecting their reverence for this extraordinary phenomenon. The festival also aims to promote tourism and attract investment to the town.

However, scientific evidence for these claims is scarce and inconclusive. Some researchers suggest that genetics may play a role, as twinning tends to run in families and among certain ethnic groups. The Yoruba people, who make up the majority of Igbo Ora’s population, have a higher frequency of dizygotic or fraternal twins than other groups. These are twins who develop from two separate eggs fertilized by two different sperm cells.

Other factors that may influence twinning include maternal age, parity, fertility treatments and environmental conditions. However, none of these can fully explain why Igbo Ora has such an exceptional concentration of twins. More studies are needed to unravel the mystery of this town’s remarkable reproductive feat.

In recent years, the global spotlight has turned towards Igbo Ora, with media outlets and researchers seeking to shed light on the secrets of this twin capital. The BBC and other international news organizations have explored the town, capturing the essence of its vibrant culture and the awe-inspiring frequency of twin births.

However there are other towns in the world where twinning is frequent, including Cândido Godói, Brazil, Mohammadpur Umri, India, Abu Atwa Ismaila, Egypt and Podgora, Croatia.

Four (4) sets of twins in Cândido Godói, posing in a photo with an elderly woman. Image source: BBC News (Youtube) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YxjdfP4qBU

These towns, with their diverse cultural and genetic backgrounds, encompass a remarkable commonality: an elevated incidence of twins that surpasses the global average. It is intriguing to ponder how their unique heritage and intrinsic traits intertwine, potentially influencing this extraordinary phenomenon.

Nonetheless, the fascination with Igbo Ora’s twins extends beyond scientific curiosity and media coverage. Igbo Ora’s twins are a source of joy and pride for their families and community. They are also a testament to the diversity and richness of Nigeria’s culture and heritage.

Tanzanian nurses to face charges for harvesting organs of baby twins

A provincial official, has reported that four nurses in Tanzania’s western Tabora area may face legal charges for harvesting the organs of baby twins.

A committee set up to investigate the incident found that the bodies of the prematurely born twins were mutilated after they had died.

The mother found her babies’ eyes gouged out and part of their skin peeled off from the forehead.

Tabora regional commissioner Batilda Buriani said the nurses, who are under arrest, have been suspended from their duties.

She said the organ-harvesting was linked to witchcraft.

The nurses misled the investigating committee by falsely claiming that the bodies were kept in the maternity ward when, in fact, they were found in the nurses’ room, Ms Buriani added.

The nurses have not yet commented on the allegations.

The report also indicates that the twins died due to a lack of neonatal care services, which were unavailable at the facility where they were born.

  • I cried when my childbirth delayed but I trusted God – Diana Hamilton

Diana Hamilton after marrying her husband, Dr Joseph Hamilton, longed to have children, but it took almost six years for God to answer her deepest prayer.

According to the celebrated Ghanaian gospel singer, she cried and broke down a couple of times during her days of waiting, but through it all, she trusted in God for a miracle.

Now a mother of twins, Michael and Michaela, she has admonished those who suffer childlessness to keep up the good faith.

“When God blesses you with a child, you just have to praise to Him… There is a young lady who has been in a long time of waiting. I heard her speaking with another guy and she is like, when I am going through it, just pray for me in your closet and when God does it, praise him with me,” she said.

“When I was waiting on God, the comments came. I am an easy-go person…yes, we will come home and cry. “I cried at the end of every month when I was hopeful and it didn’t happen. • Nigerian city celebrates its many twins with annual festival

Twins appear to be unusually abundant in Nigeria’s southwestern city of Igbo-Ora.

Nearly every family here has twins or other multiple births, says local chief Jimoh Titiloye.

For the past 12 years, the community has organized an annual festival to celebrate twins. This year’s event, held earlier this month, included more than 1,000 pairs of twins and drew participants from as far away as France, organizers said.

There is no proven scientific explanation for the high rate of twins in Igbo-Ora, a city of at least 200,000 people 135 kilometers (83 miles) south of Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos.

But many in Igbo-Ora believe it can be traced to women’s diets. Alake Olawunmi, a mother of twins, attributes it to a local delicacy called amala which is made from yam flour.

John Ofem, a gynaecologist based in the capital, Abuja, says it very well could be “that there are things they eat there that have a high level of certain hormones that now result in what we call multiple ovulation.”

While that could explain the higher-than-normal rate of fraternal twins in Igbo-Ora, the city also has a significant number of identical twins.

Those result instead from a single fertilized egg that divides into two — not because of hyperovulation.

Taiwo Ojeniyi, a Nigerian student, said he attended the festival with his twin brother “to celebrate the uniqueness” of multiple births.

“We cherish twins while in some parts of the world, they condemn twins,” he said. “It is a blessing from God.”

  • What twins tell us about artistic skill

I became interested in factors affecting artistic skill when I was an outside reader for a doctoral thesis on this topic. The thesis was later transformed into a book, Twindentity, by Mònica del Rey Jordà, published in 2021. Mònica and her identical twin sister, Gema, are from Spain and are visual artists who collaborate on video artwork and installations.

    Twin Studies

There are many twin studies of creativity, but surprisingly few twin studies on visual arts skills. However, two relevant studies are important to review. One of my former students conducted a study of reared-apart twins in which he had judges rate the creativity of drawings of a house and a person made by the twins. Genetic influences were found for the drawing of a person, but not for the drawing of a house. It is likely that there are fewer creative ways to present a house, as compared with a person. We also examined creative personality, a trait measured by the Adjective Checklist. Here, we found genetic influence as shown by the greater identical twin than fraternal twin resemblance.

A twin study of working in a creative profession by researchers in the Netherlands is also of interest. Twins employed in various design fields were among quite a few artistic areas included. Genetic influences were estimated to explain 70 percent of the individual differences. Unfortunately, however, the visual artists were not examined separately. Clearly, a great deal of work remains to be done in this area. But it is also informative to pay attention to artistic twins themselves.

    Twin Pairs at Work

David and Pieter Oyens. These 19th-century artists are typical of identical twins who show greater similarity in creativity than fraternal twins. A picture appended to the Netherlands study shows the twins’ portraits that were painted by each other. Interestingly, the twins appear quite different in manner of dress and body posture. Each twin’s use of lighting also seems to differ. Of course, one would want to examine their full body of work before drawing conclusions about their preferred styles and approaches.

Josef and Pere Santilari work together in the same space and at the same time. They combine their separate visions into what they call “the third Santilari,” which emerges when they paint a picture together.

Ephraim and Menashe Seidenbeutal were known as Sashe and Menashe. These twins were born in 1902 to a poor Jewish couple in Warsaw, Poland. Some people claim that when Sashe and Menashe were admitted to Warsaw’s Fine Arts School, the twins alternated taking classes, paying just one tuition. When this was discovered, the school allowed them to continue studying and pay just one fee.

The brothers had a unique emotional bond and created many paintings together. When painting a portrait of a model, one twin might begin, then stop and say, “My brother will come do the nose.” Even their individual work showed similarities in style, color, and form. Unfortunately, the twins’ artistic careers ended when World War II broke out, causing them to seek shelter in Lviv, located in Ukraine. After that, they were in Moscow and then the Bialystok Ghetto. When the ghetto was liquidated in 1943, the twins were sent to the Stutthof concentration camp in northern Poland, then to KL Flossenbürg, near Germany’s border with Czechoslovakia. Several days before the 1945 liberation, one twin was beaten by a guard, and when his twin brother tried to save him, they were both killed. The twins passed away too soon under horrific circumstances, leaving behind an extraordinary original artistic collection.

The paintings of the famous Albright brothers, Ivan and Malvin, have been exhibited in many places. In 1945, The New York Times article announced a two-person exhibition featuring these artists at New York City’s Associated American Artists Galleries. Their paintings show some differences—one uses brighter colors with his landscapes and depicts still-lives that appear more natural. However, it was noted that the twins’ paintings “seem not at all inharmonious when hung together.” They did collaborate on the well-known painting of Dorian Gray used in the 1944 film, “A Picture of Dorian Gray,” based on the novel of the same name by Oscar Wilde, published in 1890.

    Implications for Artistic Skills

The pairs of twin artists are all identical twins, consistent with twin studies showing genetic effects on artistic skills. (I have only provided a select sampling, too few to draw firm conclusions, but many other pairs appear in Twindentity). Of course, education, practice, and perseverance are needed for an artist to fully develop his or her talents. Everyone can improve their artistic skills, but it is unlikely that everyone will show the same level of ability or interest.

  • Twins who graduated from KNUST dump certificates to become Samira Bawumia’s official photographers

It is interesting how people would spend years in school struggling to get certificates only to realise later that their passion is in something different from what they learnt in school.

Ghanaian twin brothers Emmanuel and Samuel Appiah Gyan graduated from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) but instead of securing jobs with their certificates, they chose to be photographers.

They started their photography career under a brand called SwagOfAfrica.

Having obtained degrees in Post-Harvest Technology and Landscape Architecture from KNUST, one would have thought that Emmanuel and Samuel Appiah Gyan would have been utilising their knowledge in the field of agriculture and environmental design respectively. However, the young men chose to venture into photography alongside blogging.

Back in school even before they graduated, the duo became popular as a result of a Twinsdntbeg brand which metamorphosed into SwagOfAfrica which is making waves globally now.

SwagOfAfrica is now the official photographer for the second lady of the Republic of Ghana, Mrs Samira Bawumia, among other top celebrities.

Emmanuel and Samuel Appiah Gyan recently represented Ghana at the NAACP Awards 2020 ceremony on 22 February 2020 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

Well, it is better to identify your aim even a year to your death than to not figure it out at all in your whole life, so it is not entirely worthless that they towed a different line in their educational journey before finally discovering themselves.
