  • Afigya Kwabre: Residents up in arms over transport fare hikes

Residents of Afigya Kwabre North District have vehemently expressed their displeasure at transport fare hikes by the assembly.

A letter signed by the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Francis Asokwa Sarpong, dated 11th May, 2020, noted that new transport fares have been itemized.

According to the letter, the assembly had issued directives to some taxi stations within the District to increase their fares to some towns within the area with effect from Tuesday, 12th May 2020. The areas include Nkwatakese, Akom, Denase, Esaase and Pampatia all within the District.

Speaking on Adekyee mu nsem on Akoma fM, some residents threatened to mount barriers on roads leading to these areas which have been affected by the hike.

They said the move by the assembly came to them as a surprise and quizzed whether they are living on an island.

“We are going to block our roads to stop those taxis from entering our land should the assembly refuse to withdrawal the directive. The president assured us of no increment in fares when he made the declaration that drivers should reduce the number of passengers.

“Besides fuel prices have been reduced drastically so the assembly is being wicked to us. We are giving the assembly up to Monday to rescind the decision else the action will commence,” Godfred, a resident summed up their displeasure when he engaged host of the programme Marfo John popularly known as Sir John.

Responding to the issue, the Presiding Member for the area, Nana Boakye Yam Ababio called for calm, noting that the Coordinating Director is being engaged to reverse the decision.

Even though he declined knowledge of the communique, he said he has contacted the Coordinating Director about the issue upon receiving the letter and was optimistic that things will change before the week ends.

Efforts by the Morning Show desk to reach the District Chief Executive for clarity have proven futile at the time of filling this report.

Transport fares to go up by 10%

A statement from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council which announced the increment said the increase is “to accommodate predominantly an increase in fuel prices.”

The increases were brought on by the mid-year budget review and subsequent Parliamentary approval which saw an upward adjustment in the Road Fund Levy (RFL), the Energy Debt Recovery Levy (EDRL) and the Price Stabilization and Recovery Levy (PSRL).

The increment in transport fares has often generated a lot of controversy and sometimes causes confusion between bus conductors and passengers hesitant in paying the new fares.

But the Public Relations Officer for the Transport Ministry, Gloria Holm-Graves has urged both the Transport Operators and the commuting public to cooperate on the new fixtures.

“After meaningful discussions with the transporters, it was agreed that we have a 10% increment in transport fares. The Ministry is appealing to all transporters and the general public to comply with the new directive. The transporters have provided a chart and it shows how much the 10% would be with different fares. So for instance in situations where the commuter pays GH¢1, you may have to add 10 pesewas to make it GH¢1.10,” she said.
