John Kumah was murdered – Close associate of Wontumi reveals

Oheneba Aseidu, a close associate of the Ashanti Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Wontumi, has purported that the death of deputy finance minister, John Kumah is untimely.

Speaking on Wontumi Radio, Oheneba Asiedu stated that, John Kumah was killed as a result of his close relationship with Chairman Wontumi.

Revealing details surrounding John Kumah’s death , Oheneba Asidu explained that Wontumi and the deceased succumbed to a food poisoning incident while at Mariam Hotel in Tamale.

“John Kumah did not die, he has been killed for what I know and what I saw. John Kumah may not be perfect but is this how he is supposed to die?,” he added.

Additionally, he mentioned that the poisoned guinea fowl meat, commonly known as ‘akonfem’, was presented by a stranger to the duo was meant to end the life of Chairman Wontumi.

Unfortunately, Chairman Wontumi started reacting to the poison after he, together with John Kumah had consumed the food.

Oheneba Asidu who is also the morning host of Wontumi Radio, John Kumah, he said, did not show any sign of unfitness unlike Wontumi.

He added that certain individuals within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are hiding behind the party to terminate the lives of innocent individuals.

“People are being evil in the name of the party and I am saying this, the possible names we are hearing concerning Bawumia’s running mate, if Dr Bawumia mentions his name it will be an insult and a stab at the Chairman.

Fare thee well warrior, you went through pain – Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s tribute to John Kumah

In a heartfelt tribute, Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has revealed that a few months ago, he observed signs of “pain and turmoil” in his late colleague MP, Dr. John Kumah, who passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu recounted a recent encounter with Dr. Kumah at the economy sub-committee meeting, just two days before his demise, where they exchanged ideas and laughter.

Despite Dr. Kumah’s assurance of bouncing back strongly, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu noticed he was struggling.

In the lead-up to the passage of the Appropriations Bill in December, they had to wait for Dr. Kumah, who was in Germany for medical treatment.

Despite facing pain and turmoil, Dr. Kumah assured them he would be present on December 20, leading to the passage of the Appropriation Act on December 22.

Two days before his passing, Dr. Kumah smiled affectionately, and in the face of unexpected death, he embraced it like the warrior he was.

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu expressed deep sorrow at the tragic loss, extending wishes for eternal rest and comforting the family left behind.

Adieu, John. Until we meet again. Fare thee well!

Read Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s full statement below:

John, Hon John Kumah, Member of Parliament for Ejisu & Deputy Minister For Finance.

Just learnt of your passing on — a tragedy of monumental proportions.

Just this Tuesday, we were together at the economy sub-committee of the manifesto committee. I sat right behind you. We spoke and shared ideas, we laughed, and I asked how you were feeling at the end of the day. The positive assurance was that you were bouncing back strongly.

That was reassuring. I could notice, though, that you were struggling a bit.

That was just less than 48 hours ago. And you have transitioned? If such is life, then life must be very, very cruel!

In the lead-up to the passage of the Appropriations Bill on December 22nd, we had to wait on you, learning of the unfortunate circumstances that had taken you to Germany.

The then-Finance Minister, Hon Ken Ofori-Atta and I spoke with you and you assured us that you would be with us on the 20th of December.

It is for this reason that the Appropriation Act was passed on the 22nd of December.

Subsequently, when I saw you, I realised that you had gone through some pain and turmoil, but God was in charge.

Two days ago, you smiled, your usual affectionate smile, an infectious one at that. When death, which we least expected beckoned; you embraced it….. the warrior that you were.

John, may God give you eternal rest and the good Lord comfort the rest of your family that you have left behind.

Adieu, until we meet again. John, Fare thee well!

It is a mixed feeling of disbelief and shock. And this unfortunate news takes me back to some few months ago.

  • National Cathedral project still on course – NPP

National Cathedral project still on course – NPP

The Communications Director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has reiterated the government’s dedication to the construction of the national cathedral, dismissing claims that the project is misguided.

Mr Ahiagbah emphasized that the project is currently underway.

This affirmation comes in response to a symbolic commissioning of the incomplete National Cathedral by some Minority Members of Parliament, including North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The act aimed to underscore their perception of the government’s failure to complete the project.

Despite facing initial restrictions from security personnel to access the construction site, the Minority MPs negotiated to stand at the entrance, where they planned to hold a press conference expressing dissatisfaction with the ongoing project and its associated costs.

In an interview with Selorm Adonoo on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Ahiagbah emphasized the importance of not undermining the project and stated that the key challenge is securing more resources to complete it.

He stressed that the project is a work in progress and defended the commitment to building the national cathedral as a noble endeavor.

Ahiagbah concluded by advocating for increased revenue and resources to fulfill various national projects, emphasizing the importance of not underestimating one project’s significance over another.

“I think that the cathedral project is a work in progress. I think that for any project of that magnitude to begin you dig a foundation and you build it out. And so, where it is at, it is at the appropriate stage where in time the structure would be put on it. So, for me, I don’t see any real challenge. I don’t see any appearance of waste because necessarily you must dig the pit and build on it. So, if people want to capitalize that we are building a pit, we haven’t built it out, what I tell them is that it is just a matter of time and the structure would come out.”

“What I am very resolute and clear in my mind about is the commitment to build this and I believe that that commitment and desire to build a national cathedral for the country I think is a noble one and what we have to do is to continue in this effort and I believe that good people will come and support this project for it to see the light of day… “This cathedral thing, I think people make it seem to appear as if it is a misplaced project. It is not… What I think is our solution is that let’s get more revenue and more resources and build all of these things that we are looking for. And let’s not in the process underestimate the importance of one thing over the other,” he stated.

  • Akufo-Addo’s ministerial reshuffle worsened Ghanaians’ resentment towards NPP – IMANI Africa

Akufo-Addo’s ministerial reshuffle worsened Ghanaians’ resentment towards NPP – IMANI Africa

President Akufo-Addo’s recent reshuffle failed to significantly impact the positive sentiments surrounding the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), as per data from IMANI Africa’s Public Understanding and Literacy for Sentiment and Election (PULSE).

According to the report obtained by JoyNews, the reshuffle appeared to generate more negative sentiments towards the NPP.

Covering the period from February 11 to February 26, 2024, the report revealed that while both party candidates experienced an increase in purely negative sentiments, the NPP witnessed a higher percentage rise – from around 21% to just over 28%.

This marked a 7% increase in negative sentiment compared to the NDC’s approximately 4% increment during the same period.

The report suggested that, overall, more people harbored negative feelings about both parties, with the NPP receiving more mentions and a growing negative sentiment.

Despite the reshuffle, the Periodic Social Media Sentiment Analysis Report published in March indicated that the NPP continued to lead in social media mentions.

“The inference here is that generally more people feel negative about both parties, with NPP however having more mentions and more growing negative sentiment”, it added.

The report noted that the NPP’s dominant presence on social media might be due to being the ruling party, with more commentators focusing on their policies and the messages of their presidential candidate than those of the NDC.

The data also revealed that former President John Dramani Mahama experienced an 8.27% reduction in negative sentiments during the observed period. Additionally, his reach on non-social media web sources decreased by 6.78%, indicating a significant drop.

“while there was the ministerial reshuffle during the period, the gap in mentions and social reach was nevertheless still dominant. The NPP is probably being mentioned more as the ruling party with more social media commentators putting their policies forward, as well as the current messages of their presidential candidate under the spotlight, more than they are doing with the candidate of the NDC.”

    Background:
On February 14, President Akufo-Addo announced a ministerial reshuffle, the first major overhaul since assuming office in January 2017.

The reshuffle involved the removal and reassignment of ministers, including Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, Roads Minister Kwame Amoako-Atta, and Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang Manu.

My decision to leave NPP has been rescinded – Obiri Boahen

Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has reversed his earlier decision to establish his own political party.

Previous report suggests that the legal practitioner was contemplating leaving the NPP due to being excluded from a role in the 2024 campaign.

Expressing his frustration at being overlooked after years of service, he initially declared his intention to part ways with the party.

However, in a recent interview with OKAY FM in Accra, Nana Obiri Boahen stated, “I have rescinded my decision to leave the party. I must say that it’s not everything I can discuss on air.”

Simultaneously, Nana Obiri Boahen has been appointed as a co-chair of the local government subcommittee within the political party’s manifesto committee.

On Saturday, March 2, 2024, the Municipal Chief Executive of Akwapim South in the Eastern Region faced defeat in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries aimed at selecting a parliamentary candidate for the 2024 general elections.

Mr. Frank Aidoo accumulated 67 votes during the polls, while his primary competitor, Eric Yeboah Apeadu, suspected to be the personal assistant to the incumbent Member of Parliament, secured a substantial lead with 267 votes.

The present Member of Parliament for Akwapim South Constituency, had previously announced his decision not to partake in the December 7 polls due to personal reasons.

In the race, another contender, Mr. Annor Mensah, received 54 votes, and Mr. Kwame Ofori Gyau surpassed the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) by acquiring 152 more votes than Mr. Aidoo.

  • Bawumia is younger and more versatile unlike Mahama – Martin Amidu

Bawumia is younger and more versatile unlike Mahama – Martin Amidu

Anti-corruption advocate and former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, has opined that the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, holds a significant advantage due to his youth and versatility.

Mr Amidu emphasized that this advantage positions Bawumia for potential re-elections, unlike the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) candidate, John Mahama, who is older and has limited attempts at the presidency.

Highlighting the NPP’s incumbency advantage in the upcoming 2024 General Elections, Mr Amidu urged the NDC to focus on convincing Ghanaians with substantive messages rather than relying on slogans.

He pointed out the NPP’s executive power and influence on electoral processes and security agencies, acknowledging that despite President Akufo-Addo’s strategic plans, the 2024 elections are not predetermined.

Mr Amidu advised the NDC to attract disenchanted individuals from various political affiliations by rallying behind the theme “Build The Ghana We Want Together.”

He emphasized the NDC’s challenge of presenting a candidate limited to a single four-year term, aiming to dispel comparisons to short-lived presidencies like that of Jimmy Carter.

“The NPP has the advantage of being in government and exercising executive power with its attendant tacit influence on the electoral processes and security agencies. The NPP has a younger and more versatile Presidential Candidate who would still be young beyond elections 2024 and 2028. The NPP knows that the 2024 elections is not a fait accompli for it despite President Akufo-Addo’s long game to succeed himself with a surrogate. The NDC must also not be deceived with poll numbers or outward public displeasure with the regime because there is still some time to the elections. Anything could happen,” Mr Amidu noted.

He continued: “The NDC on the other hand needs to entice everybody disgruntled with his present condition of life across political party lines to support its call to “Build The Ghana We Want Together” and, therefore, it has a more daunting task. Secondly, the NDC is presenting a Presidential Candidate who can assume the reins of government for only four years as a former President to nullify the perception of a Jimmy Carter-like presidency that is terminated after his first term in office. But it is in the interest of the NDC that after face-saving, the NDC must be able to win a second term of four years with a successor to John Mahama who has age on his or her side. The impression must never be created that the NDC is still not sure of contesting and winning the 2024 elections and hopes to put forward its Presidential Candidate for re-election in the 2028 election again.”

He stressed the importance of the NDC securing a second term with a successor to John Mahama, reinforcing the perception of confidence in contesting and winning the 2024 elections.

In a critical note, Amidu criticized both the NDC and NPP for allowing party elites to unduly influence the selection of running mates, a practice he deemed contrary to the dictates of the 1992 Constitution.

  • “My dumsor is better than your dumsor” – Barker-Vormawor mocks NDC, NPP

“My dumsor is better than your dumsor” – Barker-Vormawor mocks NDC, NPP

In a satirical take on the ongoing power crisis in Ghana, activist and convener of the FixTheCountry movement, Barker-Vormawor, has humorously jabbed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a post on X platform he wrote, “ Ready! Set! Go! ‘My Dumsor is better than your Dumsor”.

Both the NPP and the NDC have been apportioning blame on each other regarding the current state of the country’s energy sector.

Parts of Accra and other regions have been grappling with inconsistent power outages for several weeks commonly referred to as ‘dumsor’.

Former president, John Dramani Mahama has asserted that he assumed responsibility for resolving the power crisis that gripped the nation before his taking a bow in 2016.

Mahama has emphasized that his leadership merits recognition for putting an end to the intermittent power outages.

In an interview with Ugandan-based NBS television, Mahama acknowledged the existence of intermittent power outages and stressed that he took accountability for addressing the challenge.

He highlighted that relying solely on the Akosombo Dam was not a perpetual solution to resolve ‘dumsor.’

Mahama clarified that he refrained from assigning blame to past administrations for the crisis but, instead, embraced the responsibility of rectifying the power dilemma.

He expressed, “What did I do? I took responsibility. I didn’t blame previous governments. I said yes you call me ‘Mr. Dumsor’…I inherited this problem but I take responsibility because you voted me into power to take responsibility and fix things and so I said I’m going to fix this and by 2015 I had added an additional almost 3,000 megawatts to Ghana’s generation.”

“I was actually accused of putting in an excess generation…more generation than we needed. We are consuming 2,600 megawatts. Today we are consuming 1000 megawatts more and so if I didn’t put in that excess generation we probably would have started having an energy crisis again and it’s beginning to happen.

“Outages every day because the consumption has caught up the amount of energy that is available and we are beginning to have problems,” he added.

On the other hand, president Akufo-Addo has  emphasized his achievements in ensuring a consistent power supply for Ghanaians, countering recent outages affecting parts of the country.

During his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, 2024, the President dismissed claims of intermittent power supply amid the financial crisis, asserting that the country has not experienced the phenomenon known as DUMSOR over the past seven years.

“Mr Speaker, between 2012 and early 2017, there was nothing more demoralising than the phenomenon we called DUMSOR. It was symptomatic of a dysfunctional system, and it caused widespread depression amongst businesses and households.

After that experience, my government was determined that DUMSOR would not be inflicted upon Ghana and Ghanaians under an NPP government, and I am glad to be able to say, SO FAR, SO GOOD, we have managed to keep the lights on these last seven (7) years, even in the midst of a financial crisis.  We have managed the energy sector with discipline and expertise, to avoid a repetition of the hardships inflicted on Ghanaians some years ago.”

Meanwhile, Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Mr Dubik Mahama has pointed out that the intermittent power outages are due maintenance issues rather than fuel-related problems as reported.

He revealed that much can not be done when a power plant producing 360 megawatts begins to develop problems with its gas emergency safety valve.

Mr. Mahama assured that ECG is working diligently to resolve the challenges and restore power to affected areas.

  • NPP failed us when we had high hopes for them – Kofi Amoabeng

NPP failed us when we had high hopes for them – Kofi Amoabeng

Former CEO of defunct UT Bank and UT Holdings, Captain Prince Kofi Amoabeng (rtd), has reiterated his belief that the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has failed to live up to expectations in governing the nation.

Captain Amoabeng emphasized that despite high hopes placed in the NPP by Ghanaians, the party has ultimately disappointed the nation.

“I think one thing most Ghanaians say and I agree with them is that we had high hopes for the NPP. Because we thought at the time that the NDC had disappointed us and of course it is easy to narrate all the problems that we were going through at the time.

“But certainly, the NPP has shown that they are not a better alternative and it is even worse. They will say it is because they took my bank, but forget it,” Mr. Amoateng stated in an interview on Starr FM.

Despite his past support for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Amoabeng stated that he believes it is time to give the former President, John Mahama, another opportunity to lead the country.

In an interview on Kofi TV, the business mogul cited his seven-year experience since the NPP assumed office in 2016 as the basis for his decision.

“I wasn’t NDC as such. In fact, my sister was the MP for our area and she was Deputy Minister for Education until the recent reshuffle and of course I have to support my sister. So people in the NDC think I am NPP but the thing about this is that my genuine friends are in the NDC even though I didn’t support them in the past

“I think we made a wrong experiment and next time I have to make the right choice. So now knowing Mahama and knowing what the NPP has done, I think I have to go fully behind NDC and Mahama to see what he can do for us in his second coming.”

Mr. Amoabeng’s recent statement echoes his previous remarks expressing disappointment in the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In doing so, Mr. Amoabeng adds his voice to a growing number of chiefs, celebrities, and public figures who have thrown their support behind former President John Mahama’s candidacy since he declared his intention to run in the 2024 general elections.

  • NPP has shattered our livelihoods; they must be voted out – Small-scale miners

NPP has shattered our livelihoods; they must be voted out – Small-scale miners

The National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association in Ghana has issued a call to citizens adversely affected by the ongoing economic challenges, urging them not to cast their votes for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming December 7 elections.

The association asserts that the NPP’s ban on small-scale mining has significantly impacted its members.

In a press release signed by its President, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, the association stated, “We wish to call on all well-meaning Ghanaians and small-scale miners whose livelihoods have been shattered by the NPP in the last seven years due to the insensitive ban on small-scale mining to reject the party at the polls, come December 2024.”

The small-scale miners also directed a query towards Dr. Bawumia, requesting clarity on how he plans to revitalize the small-scale mining sector after, as they allege, contributing to its decline alongside President Akufo-Addo.

Citing evidence, the association claims that the current state of the small-scale mining sector predominantly benefits the NPP and its affiliates. They argue that promises made by Dr. Bawumia, such as decentralizing the Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as establishing district mining committees, have not materialized. The collapse of local banks that were key financiers for small-scale mining operations is also attributed to the government’s actions.

Additionally, the association dismisses government initiatives like Galamstop, the introduction of drone technology, and the mapping of concessions as ineffective and wasteful endeavors. They highlight the military’s retention of over 200 excavators belonging to small-scale miners and other investors as indicative of the NPP’s alleged inability to salvage the small-scale mining sector.

“We wish to call on all well-meaning Ghanaians and small-scale miners whose livelihoods have been shattered by the NPP in the last seven years due to the insensitive ban on small scale mining to reject the party at the polls, come December, 2024,” the Association urged in a press release signed by its President, Michael Kwadwo Peprah.

“We wish by this press release to remind and also ask Dr. Bawumia to tell us how he intends to rescue the small-scale mining sector after helping Nana Akufo-Addo to collapse same,” the small-scale miners demanded.

They alleged that, “There is incontrovertible evidence that the current state of things in the small-scale mining sector only benefits the NPP and its apparatchiks, local banks which were the primary source of financing for small scale mining operations like UniBank, UT Bank and GN Bank were collapsed under the shady banking sector clean up, the promise by Dr. Bawumia to decentralize the Minerals Commission and the EPA, and to set up district mining committees is nothing but an empty promise; in any case, his boss vowed to put his presidency on the line to fight galamsey, but the opposite is what pertains today.”

The Association further alleged that, “Programmes like Galamstop and the introduction of drone technology, mapping of concessions and tracking of excavators that were haphazardly instituted by this government was nothing but a waste of taxpayers’ money, and the fact that the military continues to hold over 200 excavators belonging to small scale miners  and other investors in the small-scale mining sector, only goes to cement the fact that, the NPP  and their flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia lacks the acumen to steer the salvage the small scale mining sector.”

Akufo-Addo is not a receptive leader – Former NPP General Secretary

A former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Ohene Ntow, has alleged that President Akufo-Addo exhibits a lack of responsiveness to both public concerns and the grievances raised by members within his own party.

Expressing his views as a member of the Movement for Change, a non-political group initiated by Alan Kyerematen, Nana Ohene Ntow shared his personal experiences working with Akufo-Addo.

He criticized the president, asserting, “I don’t think Akufo-Addo is a listening president and I have my own personal experience. In my capacity as the General Secretary when he was a candidate, I worked with him and I’ve been observing him and his responses to major public opinion issues,” he stated.

Highlighting Akufo-Addo’s alleged disregard for the voices within the NPP, Nana Ohene Ntow mentioned the president’s apparent reluctance to heed calls for a cabinet reshuffle.

He remarked,“… To the extent that he doesn’t listen to his members of parliament from the NPP. How many times have people called for a reshuffle and he didn’t, that is not a listening president. Take the case of Ken Ofori-Atta as the Minister of Finance, the MPs who form part of his government asked that he be changed but he [Akufo-Addo] didn’t mind them,” he added.

These statements were made by Nana Ohene Ntow during an appearance on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM.

I can’t be Bawumia’s vice because “I will speak my mind” – Ken Agyapong

The Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has categorically expressed his disinterest in teaming up with the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the upcoming December elections.

While Dr. Bawumia has not officially disclosed his running mate, Mr. Agyapong made it clear during an interview on the KSM Show on Pan African Television in Accra on Friday, February 23, that he prefers to remain on the sidelines and contribute in other capacities.

He explicitly stated that he has no desire to become the Vice President alongside Dr. Bawumia.

“I don’t want to be vice. What am I going to say? I believe in democracy, so I want it to work. I will stay back and watch, and whatever I have to do, I will do to contribute,” he remarked.

“But I won’t accept vice as if, at all costs, Kennedy Agyapong has to be among the leaders. One thing I have always said is that you don’t need to be president to effect change in people’s lives. I have businesses that have employed many Ghanaians and put food on their table, and it’s self-gratifying,” Agyapong added.

In elucidating his decision to decline the role of vice president, Mr. Agyapong emphasized his inclination to speak his mind, a characteristic he believes could potentially undermine his superior.

“I have businesses that have employed many Ghanaians and put food on their table and it’s self-gratifying.

He candidly stated, “To tell you the truth, I can’t be vice president because I will speak my mind, and am not going to be mate and in Ghana if you speak your mind, you will be branded…”

He revealed this when asked about his country of origin, stating, “My country has the best jollof rice, and the surname Bawumia is running for president in Africa, Gold Coast. My surname is Bawumia, and my uncle Bawumia is running for president in Ghana.”

Having previously served as a running mate twice and held the role of Vice President for seven years, Dr. Bawumia is now entrusted with leading the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Dr. Bawumia has asserted that he stands as the most qualified candidate for the leadership of Ghana in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.

Speaking at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on February 7, he emphasized the significance of addressing the people of Ghana about his candidature, vision, and priorities.

Delving into his vision for the country, Bawumia declared, “I believe I am the best candidate for the presidency of this country in the 2024 presidential election.”

“I recognise that submitting myself to your service, the electorate, to vote for me as president is no different from interviewing for a job,” he said.

“If you are looking for the man who has the vision and commitment to prepare Ghana for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it is Dr Bawumia.

“If you want a leader who has a proven record, and who you can trust to create jobs for the youth, it is Dr Bawumia”.

Akufo-Addo gave valid reasons before sacking me – Kwaku Agyemang-Manu

Former Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang-Manu has conveyed his appreciation to President Akufo-Addo for the opportunity to serve in the ministerial role.

The Dormaa Central MP disclosed that the president personally informed him of his removal in a February 14 reshuffle.

Agyemang-Manu mentioned that President Akufo-Addo provided valid reasons for his decision to replace him as the health minister.

He sees the reshuffling as part of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) strategy to break the eight-year cycle in governance.

“This reshuffling will help me do something different in my life. If I tell you the number of times I have seen the sun, you will marvel. This is because I remained dedicated to the job I was given as a minister.

“I am proud of what I have achieved as a minister. I have achieved a lot. I have no regrets. I know what I have achieved,” he said in an interview.

    Afenyo-Markin assumes Majority leadership role

The New Patriotic Party’s National Council has officially endorsed the new leadership of the majority caucus in Parliament, with Alexander Afenyo-Markin, MP for Effutu, set to assume the role of Majority Leader effective today, February 23.

This change aligns with recent parliamentary procedures and the Speaker’s ruling on the selection process.

The confirmation of leadership changes took place during a meeting chaired by the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong.

The meeting, which included members of the Majority Caucus, considered recommendations from the National Executive Committee (NEC) regarding the reshuffle.

The General Secretary presented the recommendations, along with the Majority Caucus’s concurrence letter, to the National Council, gaining approval at a meeting held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra. This process adheres to Order 6 of the Standing Orders of Parliament (2024), as interpreted by Speaker Alban SK Bagbin.

The Speaker’s interpretation emphasized the crucial role of parliamentary caucuses in leadership selection, balancing internal party democracy and parliamentary norms.

The official announcement of leadership changes will be made on the parliamentary floor by the Speaker, following the receipt of a detailed letter from the NPP General Secretary confirming the changes. Outgoing Majority Leader, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, will bid farewell in a symbolic act, marking the end of his tenure.

In a ceremonial transition, Kyei Mensah Bonsu and Adansi Asokwa MP, KT Hammond, will install Alexander Afenyo-Markin as the new Majority Leader, who will then articulate his vision and commitments in his inaugural address.

The newly appointed Majority Front Bench leadership team, as per NEC’s recommendations, includes Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Majority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei as Deputy Majority Leader, Frank Annoh Dompreh as Majority Chief Whip, Habib Iddrisu as First Deputy Majority Chief Whip, and Alex Tetteh Djornobuah as Second Deputy Majority Chief Whip.

The reshuffle, in accordance with the Speaker’s interpretation and the Standing Orders, marks a pivotal moment in harmonizing democratic and legal principles in Ghana’s parliamentary leadership. This transition is anticipated to usher in a new era of parliamentary operations, with the refreshed NPP team leading legislative proceedings and national development initiatives.

Mandatory consultation needed to reshuffle parliamentary leadership – Dr Rasheed Draman

The Executive Director of the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Dr. Rasheed Draman, has underscored the significance of consultations in the reorganization of parliamentary leadership.

Instead of outright resignations, Dr. Draman notes that parliamentary leaders are typically reshuffled through extensive consultations.

His comments come in the wake of the resignation of Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, on February 21. Dr. Draman expresses concern that the absence of such consultations could diminish the motivation of parliamentarians to fully contribute to their parties.

Quoted by 3news.com, Dr. Draman states, “It is sad for our parliament but most importantly, it is not a motivation for others to give their all in terms of their contributions to their party and so on.”

Emphasizing the importance of broad consultations within both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Draman highlights the need for inclusivity when contemplating changes in parliamentary leadership.

“The party has every right, as the leader has said, in terms of making decisions but the keyword is consultation and carrying everybody along,” he says.

Dr. Draman contended that such consultations would dispel the perception that party leadership does not consider the views and suggestions of its members before making decisions.

He also asserted that parliamentary caucuses deserve better treatment from their party leadership.

Reflecting on past events, Dr. Draman notes dissatisfaction among caucus members during previous reshuffles due to a lack of consultation being the primary issue.

“The party has every right, as the leader has said, in terms of making decisions but the keyword is consultation and carrying everybody along,” Dr. Draman said.

He also believes that such consultations would dispel the notion that party leadership does not heed the views and suggestions of its members before making decisions.

Dr. Draman further asserted that parliamentary caucuses deserve better treatment from their party leadership.

Reflecting on past events, he said there are dissatisfactions among caucus members during previous reshuffles because of a lack of consultation as the primary issue.

He explained, “When the NDC thing [reshuffle] happened, there were a lot of members of the caucus who were very angry, not because of the change but because of the process and how most of them were not consulted.”

  • Bawumia cannot be trusted in corruption fight – NDC

Bawumia cannot be trusted in corruption fight – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has leveled accusations of corruption against the Akufo-Addo-led administration.

During a press conference held at the Adabraka party headquarters on February 19, 2024, Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communication Officer, asserted that Ghanaians are enduring hardship due to corruption within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

Mr Gyamfi specifically targeted Vice President Bawumia, who also serves as the NPP flagbearer, alleging his involvement in various scandals within the current administration.

The NDC contended that Dr. Bawumia lacks credibility in fighting corruption and is portrayed to Ghanaians as a “puppet” of President Akufo-Addo, with the primary objective of shielding wrongdoers and covering up the administration’s corruption.

Mr Gyamfi emphasized, “Today, Ghanaians are suffering because the meagre resources of the country which are supposed to be put to judicious use for the benefit of all Ghanaians, have been hijacked by the greedy, selfish and corrupt Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government and their accomplices in the ruling New Patriotic Party.

“…we are suffering because of the unprecedented corruption we are witnessing under Akufo-Addo and his corrupt protégé Bawumia. It’s as simple as that,” he said.

The party has therefore urged Ghanaians to reject Dr. Bawumia and the NPP in the elections and vote to return John Mahama and the NDC to restore accountability.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the press, the fact is, “appearance fee” merchant Bawumia is corrupt and cannot be trusted to fight corruption. The only way Ghanaians can get to the bottom of the litany of corrupt acts and scandals involving officials of this government including Bawumia himself, is for the good people of Ghana to resoundingly boot the NPP out of office on 7th December, 2024.

“H.E John Dramani Mahama has demonstrated both in government and out of government, that he detests corruption, and will never condone corruption, nor shield perpetrators of corrupt acts.

“He has stated clearly, that the days of the corruption clearing agent, will come to an end on January 7, 2025, when by the grace of God, he assumes office as President. He has said and demonstrated before, that the sword of the fight against corruption will cut both ways under his government, whether you are a member of his government or not.

“… call on the Ghanaian electorate not to allow President Akufo-Addo and his corrupt cabal of family and friends, to install as President, their puppet (Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia), whose sole mission is to cover-up the many ills of this remarkably corrupt administration and insulate wrongdoers including himself, from prosecution,” he added.

The NDC called on Ghanaians to reject Dr. Bawumia and the NPP in the upcoming elections, advocating for the return of John Mahama and the NDC to restore accountability.

  • I reshuffled for Ghana’s sake and not for personal benefits – Akufo-Addo

I reshuffled for Ghana’s sake and not for personal benefits – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has addressed the rationale behind his recent ministerial reshuffle, a departure from his usual practice of retaining ministers for extended periods.

The reshuffle, affecting about 12 current ministers, including 10 cabinet members and two regional ministers, was announced on Wednesday, February 14. Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta was notably removed after surviving previous calls for dismissal.

Criticism from the opposition National Democratic Congress and Minority Members of Parliament deems the decision belated and lacking inspiration.

Fifi Kwetey, the party’s General Secretary, expressed disappointment, characterizing the reshuffle as maintaining the status quo rather than delivering the desired change for Ghanaians.

“This action—or rather, inaction—underscores a blatant disregard for the nation’s plea for governance that puts the people’s welfare above political expediency,” he said.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, responding to concerns about the reshuffle, emphasized that the decision was made with the citizens’ best interests in mind rather than catering to personal preferences.

Speaking to JoyNews’ Foreign Affairs Correspondent Blessed Sogah in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, he highlighted the importance of prioritizing the welfare of the people in governmental decisions, stating, “It is for the people of Ghana, not for me.”

During the 37th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly (Heads of State and Government) in Addis Ababa, President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to maintain faith in the country’s democratic journey, especially as it prepares to elect the next leader later this year.

Emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles, he called on citizens to actively participate in the electoral process and exercise their right to vote responsibly.

MP for Asante Mampong secures re-election as parliamentary candidate

The incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the Asante Mampong Constituency in the Ashanti region, Kwaku Ampratum-Sarpong, has been re-elected as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the upcoming December 7 general election.

The Asante Mampong constituency parliamentary primary faced a temporary suspension due to a court injunction challenging the credibility of the constituency album intended for use in the election conducted on January 27, 2024, nationwide.

The resolution of the issue in court, facilitated by the party’s general secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah, led to the fixing of a new election date on February 17, 2024.

The closely contested election featured a competition between the former Ashanti Regional Communications Director, Denis Kwakwa, and the incumbent Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kwaku Ampratum-Sarpong.

Following the contest, the incumbent MP secured a comfortable 555 votes, while his contender, Denis Kwakwa, managed 167 out of the total 727 votes cast, with 5 votes rejected. Despite expectations favoring the former Ashanti Regional Youth Organizer, the incumbent MP emerged victorious in the election.

  • Be vigilant, don’t fall for empty promises – Martin Amidu advises ahead of December 7 polls

Former Minister for the Interior during the Mills-Mahama administration, Mr. Martin Amidu, has urged voters to choose candidates whose promises are realistic.

He warned that failure to do so may result in the election of leaders who have no genuine interest in serving the electorate.

“As Ghana gets closer to the 2024 election season the NPP and the NDC are deploying various deceptive tools to win over the electorate whom they will each forget after securing the votes of the electorate to come to power for the next three years until the next election year,” he wrote in an opinion piece published on 3news.com.

In an opinion piece published on 3news.com, Amidu observes that as Ghana approaches the 2024 election season, both the NPP and the NDC are employing deceptive tactics to secure votes, only to forget the electorate once in power until the next election.

The former Deputy Attorney-General under the Rawlings administration emphasizes the need for the 2024 elections to be based on established facts and achievable projections.

He criticized the prevalent trend of empty promises from the major political parties without tangible plans for implementation.

Amidu, the immediate past Special Prosecutor, highlights that the election season has become a period of deception for the political elite, urging constitutional activists to expose such tactics. He emphasizes the importance of focusing on proven records and achievements rather than falling for deceptive promises.

With the Ghanaian elections scheduled for December 7, 2024, and the NPP and NDC having selected their candidates, attention now turns to the running mates of the presidential contenders, former President Mahama and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

As the campaign intensifies, Mahama promises a 24-hour economy, while Bawumia pledges to abolish taxes considered critical by the current administration for economic sustenance.

  • Akufo-Addo is one of Ghana’s best presidents – Alfred Thompson

Akufo-Addo is one of Ghana’s best presidents – Alfred Thompson

A member of the communications team for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alfred Thompson, has expressed the belief that President Akufo-Addo will be remembered as one of the best presidents in the 4th republic.

Thompson’s statement came in response to the recent ministerial reshuffle on February 14, 2024, where certain ministers were dismissed and others were reassigned.

Addressing concerns about the timing of the reshuffle, Thompson drew an analogy to a critical moment in a football match and emphasized that even a few minutes hold significance in politics.

“Coming back to your question about isn’t it too late, what is too late? When Ghana was going to be kicked out in the AFCON, how many minutes, in less than 4 minutes, that was when they scored the two. But let me give you even extra; in less than 4 minutes. Anything in politics, even 5 minutes is very dear in politics. If you believe that I have some fresh blood coming in, some energy coming in to make sure that I make a mark that I want to do, I don’t see anything wrong with that.

“… and he can decide even by June to make another reshuffle, he can decide by September to do another reshuffle; it depends on what the president wants and makes sure that he leaves a mark of excellence… and I believe that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be remembered in this 4th republic as the best or one of the best presidents Ghana has ever had!” he claimed during TV3’s New Day programme on Friday, February 16, 2024.

He defended the decision, stating that injecting fresh energy into the government is a positive move. He further noted that the president could opt for additional reshuffles in the future to ensure excellence and leave a lasting impact.

Thompson shared his perspective during an appearance on TV3’s New Day program on Friday, February 16, 2024.

On the same date, President Akufo-Addo made significant changes to his administration by dismissing key ministers in areas such as roads, finance, and health, while reassigning others.

The vacant ministerial positions were promptly filled with new appointees as part of the reshuffle.

Health officer allegedly slapped by Tamale Mayor

The Tamale Metro Assembly and Northern Regional Coordinating Council, operating under the Local Government Staff Association, are planning a demonstration on Monday, February 19, 2024.

This comes in response to an alleged assault on a health official by Tamale Mayor, Sule Salifu, who is also the parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Tamale Central Constituency.

The dispute originated from a decision by the Northern regional environmental health officer overseeing staff transfers at the metropolitan health office, Sulemana Yakubu.

Yakubu reportedly transferred 18 staff members, including an acquaintance of Mayor Salifu, leading to a heated confrontation between the two.

According to Rainbow Radio’s correspondent, Prince Kwame Tamekloe, the disagreement escalated to the point where Mayor Salifu allegedly slapped Sulemana Yakubu three times.

“About three weeks ago, they held a meeting at the environmental health office, where Sulemana Yakubu serves as both the Northern Regional Environmental Health Officer and the authority responsible for staff transfers.

“It is alleged that Mayor Salifu was not pleased with the transfer of his loved one, leading to an exchange of words and ultimately, the mayor slapping Officer Yakubu three times,” he said.

“The Northern Regional Minister has expressed disapproval of the mayor’s actions, stating that it is not appropriate…the workers are insisting that they will not feel safe working with the mayor until he issues an apology.

“Despite the Regional Minister’s request for an apology, the mayor has refused to comply,” he added.

The incident took place during a meeting at the environmental health office about three weeks ago.

Despite the regional minister’s intervention, Mayor Salifu has reportedly refused to apologize to the health officer.

The workers are adamant that they won’t feel safe working with the mayor until he issues an apology, despite the Northern Regional Minister expressing disapproval of the mayor’s actions.

Atlantic Lithium dedicates 1% of its revenue to develop communities in Mfantseman

Atlantic Lithium, an exploration and development company, has committed to allocating one percent of its mining revenue to uplift the communities in Mfantseman.

Aaron Monver, the Head of Operations at Atlantic Lithium, emphasized the company’s focus on prioritizing the well-being of its working environment and supporting community development.

To achieve this, the company plans to establish a community development fund aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of the catchment communities.

This commitment was conveyed during a meeting organized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to discuss the proposed Ewoyaa lithium mining and processing project in the Central Region.

The meeting provided a platform for Atlantic Lithium to engage with the communities, gather feedback, and address environmental concerns as part of the process to secure operational permits.

Aaron Monver urged the community to embrace the opportunities created by the project, emphasizing the importance of local participation.

Atlantic Lithium is dedicated to responsible mining practices that contribute positively to the local communities and the country as a whole.

Stakeholders were encouraged to collaborate in supporting the project to achieve its objectives.

The move aligns with the growing demand for lithium, driven by the increasing adoption of electric vehicles for energy storage to meet global climate change objectives.

Injunction against NPP Asante Mampong constituency primary dismissed by court

Per reports, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is scheduled to conduct a parliamentary primary in the Asante Mampong constituency on February 17, following the dismissal of an interlocutory injunction by the Court of Appeal.

The plaintiffs, led by Kofi Sarpong, contested the January 27 primary, objecting to the use of the current voter album for the elections.

However, on February 14, a three-member panel, led by Justice Georgina Mensah-Datsa, rejected the application.

The Mampong Constituency Secretary of the NPP, Alhaji Agyei Malik, confirmed the court’s decision and stated that the party has informed all relevant stakeholders about the rescheduled primary.

Mr Malik underscored the importance of party unity, urging both sides to work together.

He said,“The case was dismissed by the court because the plaintiffs did not produce enough evidence… The party has set 17 February for the conduct of the elections… All relevant stakeholders including polling station executives have been duly informed.”

“We believe that this is not a win for certain people and vanquish for others… The onus lies on those people claiming victory to extend an olive hand to the other side and bring them on board,” he added.

However, Emmanuel Osei Abu-Bonsra, counsel for the plaintiffs, expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling, hinting at the possibility of an appeal.

He remarked, “I am not satisfied with the ruling, but I respect the decision of the court… We have not exhausted all available channels yet.”

  • There is no difference; voting for Bawumia is as voting for Akufo-Addo – Lecturer

There is no difference; voting for Bawumia is as voting for Akufo-Addo – Lecturer

A senior lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), Professor Kobby Mensah, has countered suggestions that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would bring a distinct leadership style compared to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In an interview on Neat FM on Thursday, February 15, 2024, Prof. Mensah asserted that he perceives no disparity between Dr. Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, and President Akufo-Addo, despite the vice president’s articulation of his vision for the country.

He emphasized that, based on the information presented, he did not observe any noteworthy differences that would lead him to believe Dr. Bawumia intends to chart a distinct course from that of President Akufo-Addo if he assumes the presidency.

“… there is no difference, there is no difference. They are the same. If you vote for Bawumia, you are voting for Akufo-Addo – they are the same.

“Because when you say you’re coming with your own vision, it is not the programme you mention that would make us see the differentiation. It is your attitude, and the underlining philosophy of the programme you are mentioning that would make me see that you are different,” he said in Twi.

He highlighted that the differentiation should not only be based on the programs mentioned but also on the attitude and underlying philosophy of those programs.

Prof. Mensah noted that Dr. Bawumia’s speeches and flamboyancy have not demonstrated a significant shift from his previous support for Nana Addo, indicating that he has not witnessed a fundamental change in vision.

Prof Mensah added, “Bawumia hasn’t changed the flamboyancy he used to support Nana Addo. I didn’t see any difference between his speech in 2015 and the one he had recently for me to believe that, indeed, he is carrying a new vision. What did he say? You are here talking about AI and the likes, flamboyancy, and he has not achieved any of his promises.”

NDC’s Beatrice Annan caught ‘pants down’ over Free SHS comment

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, Beatrice Annan, has been exposed for lying about the party’s stance on the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

A Twitter user, @Bagya_Nurudeen, posted a compilation of old videos that showed Annan claiming that the NDC never campaigned against the Free SHS policy, which was initiated by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration.

The video, which was captioned “This year, no amount of propaganda and lies will be tolerated. @Beatrice_Annan1 has been exposed” with a pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) slogan, “Say no to the NDC”, showed Annan speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme.

“The NDC never campaigned against Free SHS. The NDC was the political tradition that introduced progressive Free SHS,” she said amid shrieks of laughter from another member on the panel who seemed to disagree with her position.

However, the video also showed other clips of NDC leaders, such as flagbearer John Mahama, General Secretary Fiifi Kwetey, and Director of Interparty and CSOs Relations Peter Boamah Otokunor, speaking heavily against the Free SHS policy and the method of implementation.

“Free SHS will not be feasible because if you look at the cost of education in this country, in any country, it is very, very expensive,” said Otokunor.

“When today you look at the NPP going all over the country shouting Free SHS, Free SHS, Free SHS. That is, all lie be lie,” said Kwetey.

The compilation also had a snippet of an NDC rally where members chanted “Free education 419, Free education 419”. 419 in this context means ‘fraud’.

The video has sparked a lot of reactions online, with many people accusing Annan and the NDC of being dishonest and hypocritical about the Free SHS policy, which has increased access and quality of secondary education in the country.

Some people also questioned the credibility and competence of Annan to speak on such matters.” She didn’t have the records, and possibly by then, she was in school,” @AtingaAdombire wrote in the comments in response to the video.

  • Don’t take credit for what you didn’t do, we fixed dumsor – NDC to NPP

Don’t take credit for what you didn’t do, we fixed dumsor – NDC to NPP

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has contradicted Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s assertion that the Akufo-Addo government successfully resolved the nation’s power crisis, known as dumsor.

Rejecting Dr. Bawumia’s claim, the NDC urged Ghanaians to dismiss it, emphasizing its inaccuracy.

Addressing the nation on Wednesday, February 7, as the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Bawumia highlighted the achievements of the current administration, including the alleged resolution of dumsor.

He credited this accomplishment to a decisive and intentional government program.

In response, the NDC issued a press statement challenging Dr. Bawumia’s assertions, maintaining that the power crisis was actually addressed during the tenure of former President John Mahama, whom they hailed as a nation builder.

“We started with a clear, decisive and deliberate program to, among other things, stabilise the economy, fix dumsor, fix the NHIS, fix the roads, clear the arrears, make education free and accessible, significantly enhance social protection for the vulnerable in society, industrialize our economy, tackle youth unemployment and empower farmers,” he stated.

Contrary to Dr. Bawumia’s claims, the NDC argued that it was the NDC/Mahama government that successfully addressed DUMSOR.

They pointed out that Ghana experienced dumsor in various years before 2012, and President Mahama, recognizing the issue, promised to fix it.

“On the contrary, the facts show that it was the NDC/Mahama government that fixed DUMSOR. Note that Ghana recorded DUMSOR in 1984, 1997, 2006-2007, before the problem reoccured in 2012, as a result of a disruption of the West African Gas pipeline, which created a power generation deficit.””The visionary and experienced Nation Builder, President Mahama accepted responsibility for the problem and promised to fix it. Indeed, by 2016 he had comprehensively fixed DUMSOR and ended load shedding.”

By 2016, he had comprehensively resolved dumsor by introducing power plants like Ameri and Karpower, increasing the country’s generation capacity by over 800 Megawatts.

The NDC’s statement also highlighted that the NPP, including Bawumia, now blames Mahama for creating what they term as “excess capacity” in power generation.

  • Mahama has nothing to offer as compared to Bawumia – Nana Akomea

Mahama has nothing to offer as compared to Bawumia – Nana Akomea

The Chief Executive Officer of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, expressed confidence that Ghanaians would have no regrets in keeping the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in power, especially with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the president.

This assurance comes in the aftermath of the Bawumia Speak conference, where the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, unveiled his visions for the country on February 7, 2024, with a focus on the 2025 leadership.

Nana Akomea, speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show, ‘Ghana Montie,’ conveyed his optimism about Dr. Bawumia’s ideologies presented in his ‘Bold Solution’ address, emphasizing the potential for reshaping Ghana under the NPP’s leadership.

In comparing Dr. Bawumia to former president Mahama, Nana Akomea asserted that such a comparison would be inappropriate. He highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, contrasting them with what he described as the lack of concrete policies from Mahama in his bid for the presidency once again.

“Bawumia is new and brings new ideas, Mahama is a former president and has nothing to offer,” he said.

I saw NPP’s Dickson Osei-Assibey in a fatal accident – Apostle Francis Amoako Atta

Founder and Leader of the Lord’s Parliament Chapel International, Apostle Francis Amoako Atta made a startling revelation during the live broadcast of Onua FM’s “Maseda Nie Thanksgiving Breakfast” on Friday, February 9, 2024, held at El Wak Stadium.

The Man of God shared a prophetic message about the life of an NPP aspirant who vied for the parliamentary seat in the Atwima Nwabiagya North constituency, Lawyer Dickson Osei-Assibey, during this year’s primaries.

As the Apostle ministered, he disclosed a forewarning that Osei-Assibey might encounter a fatal car accident, potentially resulting in his demise.

Offering specific details, he mentioned the former aspirant’s ownership of a white V8 vehicle and a school in Barekese, revealing that he witnessed posters of Osei-Assibey’s obituary affixed to the school premises.

Delving into the parliamentary seat contest, Apostle Amoako Atta stated, “I saw he was number one on the ballot paper but the candidate who was number two on the ballot paper won the election”.

The Man of God also highlighted the existence of malicious activities perpetrated against Lawyer Dickson Osei-Assibey, attributing these acts to his ultimate defeat in the primaries.

  • You fought us over baseless e-levy only for Bawumia to scrap it – Sam George to NPP MPs

You fought us over baseless e-levy only for Bawumia to scrap it – Sam George to NPP MPs

The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia‘s pledge to abolish the E-levy, equating it to a deceptive move aimed at NPP MPs who previously supported the tax implementation.

In a post on his X platform dated February 8, 2024, Sam George questioned the sentiments of the NPP MPs who enthusiastically applauded Bawumia’s announcement, highlighting the apparent contradiction in their positions.

Expressing skepticism, Sam George noted that Bawumia’s statement essentially implied that the MPs lacked foresight in their support for the E-levy, dismissing their arguments and debates as baseless.

“I have a question to ask my Colleague NPP MPs who were sitting in the UPSA Hall yesterday and clapping vigorously for the comical performance of Dr @MBawumia. How do you all feel after fighting the NDC MPs and walking out and insulting us over the e-Levy?

“Now Bawumia says you all are short-sighted and not critical in your thinking and analysis. He says your arguments and debates in favour of e-Levy are all bogus and useless. And you were clapping yesterday? Or you were not paying attention? Like I am trying to understand how you must be feeling. Anyway, Ken Ofori-Atta is still Finance Minister after all your complaints. We move,” he added.

He specifically addressed the NPP MPs who had vehemently supported the tax, asking how they felt now that their candidate proposed its cancellation.

Despite their complaints about Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, Sam George concluded his post with a nonchalant “We move.”

“To move towards a cashless economy, however, we have to encourage the population to use electronic channels of payment. To accomplish this, there will be no taxes on digital payments under my administration. The e-levy will, therefore, be abolished,” he said at the UPSA auditorium on February 7.

Dr. Bawumia, who serves as both Vice President and the NPP’s flagbearer, had announced during a manifesto delivery at the UPSA auditorium on February 7 that, if elected President, he would eliminate the E-levy as part of a broader strategy to promote a cashless economy.

  • Don’t trust Bawumia, he can’t scrap e-levy – Economist

    Don’t trust Bawumia, he can’t scrap e-levy – Economist

Economist Professor John Gatsi expressed skepticism regarding the feasibility of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, fulfilling his promise to eliminate the electronic financial transactions tax, known as the e-levy, along with four other taxes if elected as Ghana’s president.

Dr. Bawumia had committed to scrapping the e-levy and other taxes to promote the use of electronic payment channels.

Professor Gatsi countered this proposal, highlighting the challenge of implementation, given that the e-levy was introduced by the government to generate revenue, aligning with International Monetary Fund (IMF) requirements for an extended credit facility.

According to Professor Gatsi, Dr. Bawumia’s pledge is perceived as a political strategy aimed at enhancing his appeal to voters in the upcoming general elections.

The economist asserted that such a commitment would be impractical for the NPP’s flagbearer to fulfill if elected as president.

“I believe that all these discussions are going to be centered on 2025, and it is just a political strategy to make Bawumia look good for the election because you have already created a revenue stream for this government, and the IMF program will not end in 2025. So, to say, you need the same level of revenue to sustain the program. I don’t understand how you will be able to take one revenue source from the kitty and remain sustainable in the eyes of the IMF.”

“What Bawumia should be saying is that he will propose taxes A or B to replace the e-levy. If that is not what he is saying, then it is not something he can do, especially under the IMF programme.”

  • You are treading on a suicidal path for aiming to rename public universities – Kweku Baako to Mahama

Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide Newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, has raised concerns about the advisability of former President John Dramani Mahama’s pledge to revert the names of certain public universities renamed during the Akufo-Addo administration.

During the February 7, 2024, edition of Kokrokoo on Peace FM, Baako expressed skepticism about the quality of advice influencing Mahama’s campaign promises, cautioning that such commitments might lead to negative consequences.

“It might even be suicidal for you the person advocating such a thing in terms of the area, what they are perceived as. So, maybe there isn’t quality advice going into some of these campaign promises,” he stated.

“It can impact on election outcomes. This is not an issue you put on the front burner and charge people’s emotions on. It could easily backfire,” he stated.

He stressed that ill-considered promises could significantly impact the electoral prospects of the opposition leader, prompting his inquiry into the quality of advice and careful consideration given to such assurances.

“And so we will restore the original names, and the names that they have given them, will be given to a significant infrastructure in the Universities.

“We will add other people and name the infrastructure in the Universities after them. But if the University is University for Development Studies, that is its core mandate. It will be called the University for Development Studies,” he stated.

Recently, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), announced his party’s intention to restore the original names of public universities if the NDC assumes office in 2025. Mahama accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of simply renaming universities constructed by the NDC and emphasized the alleged absence of new universities established during the NPP’s tenure.

Bawumia’s address gave me a good sleep – Economist

Economist Dr. Adu Owusu Sarkodie has expressed satisfaction with a speech by New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stating that it left him feeling well-rested.

In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Thursday, Dr. Sarkodie acknowledged Bawumia‘s digitization initiatives as a positive step forward, emphasizing that the presented ideas weren’t new to experts like him who had extensively discussed tax-related matters.

“I slept well after listening to Bawumia. He shouldn’t be blamed for everything” he said in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Thursday.

In the address titled ‘Bawumia Speaks,’ the Vice President pledged to remove certain tax policies, including the controversial E-Levy, Emission Tax, and the 15% VAT on electricity.

While some praise these commitments, skeptics question why these taxes are proposed for removal when implemented by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

As an economist, Dr. Sarkodie believes Dr. Bawumia is prepared to address tax regimes to prevent adverse effects on the economy.

He considers the Vice President’s decision to abolish the E-Levy and other taxes, if elected President, as a divine blessing and commends Bawumia’s vision for a modern system. Dr. Sarkodie reiterates that the proposed tax regime reforms will contribute to economic recovery.

NPP govt has created more jobs than any other – Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has asserted that the Akufo-Addo administration has outperformed all others in job creation, generating a remarkable 2.1 million jobs amid the global economic crisis from 2017 to 2022.

Speaking at the UPSA auditorium in Accra, Vice President Bawumia highlighted the government’s achievements, noting the recruitment of 100,000 additional health workers, a similar number of teachers, and a doubling of fire service personnel recruitment.

He underscored the government’s success in creating jobs, with 1.2 million hires in the public sector and 975,000 in the private sector, according to SSNIT data.

“What is probably the most remarkable development in terms of the economy is that our government has created 2.1 million jobs between 2017 and 2022 notwithstanding the global economic crisis. The public sector recruited 1.2 million people while the private sector created 975,000 jobs (per SSNIT data) . We recruited 100,000 more health workers, 100,000 more teachers, more than doubled the fire service personnel, etc. Our government has quite clearly created more jobs in a seven year period than any government. This is truly remarkable under the circumstances even though we still have to create more jobs,” he remarked.

Despite the economic challenges, Vice President Bawumia emphasized the government’s adept navigation, steering the nation away from catastrophe.

He pointed to the resilient performance of the economy in various aspects, including GDP growth, agricultural and industrial expansion, trade balance, gross international reserves, and notable job creation.

Acknowledging the need for continued job creation, Vice President Bawumia expressed the government’s commitment to enhancing its achievements.

“Clearly notwithstanding the economic crisis, this government has been able to steer the ship of the nation away from catastrophe. In the face of the crisis, the overall performance of the economy in areas such as GDP Growth, agricultural growth, industrial growth, trade balance, gross international reserves and job creation demonstrated resilience. Available data also shows that notwithstanding the challenging economy we inherited, and the global economic crisis that ensued, government has chalked a large number of achievements across the country. Due to time constraints.”

He teased the forthcoming release of the “Performance Tracker,” detailing accomplishments across sectors and districts in Ghana. The tracker aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the government’s contributions to the nation’s development.

Ghana’s parliament is becoming a laughing stock in the world – Majority Leader

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has expressed concern over the significant departure of experienced lawmakers from parliament, whether voluntarily or through electoral defeat in their respective primaries.

He notes that Ghana is currently recognized as one of the three countries globally with a high attrition rate in its parliament, a characterization that invites global ridicule.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who is voluntarily exiting Parliament, voiced his worries on the Sunrise show on 3FM, emphasizing the negative impact on Ghana’s international reputation.

“I am very much worried. Let us face it, we are becoming a laughing stock in the world because as I said, Ghana is one of three countries in the world with the highest attrition rate in our parliament, it is not a good description at all,” the Suame lawmaker who is also exiting Parliament voluntarily told Johnnie Hughes on the Sunrise show on 3FM Wednesday February 7.

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, also shared apprehensions about the exit of seasoned Members of Parliament from the House.

Notable departures include First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei Owusu, Cletus Avoka, ABA Fuseini, and Edward Bawa.

Speaking in Parliament, Speaker Bagbin highlights the loss of 28 MPs through the NPP primaries and an additional 17 MPs through the NDC primaries.

He emphasized the negative implications of voluntary discontinuance and deselection, stating that such occurrences are not favorable for the legislature and Ghana’s democratic development.

Bagbin called for serious consideration by political parties, stressing the importance of experience in the House and the substantial investment made in each MP by the nation.

“Honourable members, the primaries are part of the process for the electorates to determine who represents them in parliament. But the case of voluntary discontinuance of five and 19, followed by deselection of 17 and 28, is not a good signal for the legislature and for Ghana’s democratic development. Experience, as we all know, counts in this House, but the endorsement of your party is equally important.”

He added “Honourable members, the haemorrhage and cost to the nation, however, are matters of great concern worth considering by all stakeholders, and I want to appeal to the political parties to take this up seriously, because the investment that is made in an individual MP is so huge for the nation just to go to waste after every four years.”

    I didn’t leave a mess behind, blame your ‘clueless’ Ofori-Atta – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Former President , John Dramani Mahama refuted claims of leaving an economic mess during his tenure and directed blame towards President Nana Akufo-Addo’s finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, labeling the economic management team as “clueless.”

Encouraging Ghanaians to vote against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming December general elections, Mahama highlighted the achievements of his administration before the NPP took office in 2016.

Expressing disappointment that the Akufo-Addo-led administration continued to blame his previous government for their failures, Mahama defended his term, stating that the state of the economy during his leadership was far better than the current situation under the Nana Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration.

Mahama stated, “You didn’t inherit a mess; it is your clueless economic management team and finance minister that created the mess we are experiencing today.”Emphasizing his economic successes, Mahama positioned himself as the most qualified candidate for leading the nation after the December general elections.

He urged Ghanaians to reject what he considers the NPP’s rhetoric, emphasizing that the country has not made substantial progress as recently portrayed.

Beg Alan to come back if you want to win 2024 elections – Carlos Ahenkorah tells NPP

Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema West, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, has advised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to take decisive actions to bring back its former member, Alan Kyerematen if they aspire to secure victory in the 2024 presidential elections.

During a panel discussion on UTV on Monday, February 5, 2024, he passionately urged NPP members to consider reaching out to Alan and even suggested going to great lengths, including kneeling, to persuade him to rejoin the party.

Mr Ahenkorah expressed concern that if Alan Kyerematen, who is now the leader of the Movement for Change, proceeds with his plan to run as an independent candidate could significantly impact the party’s votes in 2024, especially in its stronghold, the Ashanti Region.

“At this juncture, if we allow him to continue what he is doing, it would really affect the fortunes of the NPP. No one can tell me that if we should have the 2024 election, today, Mr Alan Kyerematen does not have footprints across the country to get a lot of votes.

“The man (Alan) is not an ordinary politician. He has been in politics since the beginning of the 4th Republic and has been active since then… at a point, he was the main contender for the flagbearership position. If I’m not mistaken, he has been in all the constituencies in Ghana more than 6 or 7 times,” he said in Twi during a panel discussion on UTV on Monday, February 5, 2024.

The MP added, “It is better late than never… I’m pleading with you NPP members if we have to go on our knees to beg Alan let us do it”.

He emphasized the need for NPP leadership to humbly request Alan’s return, emphasizing that the party cannot afford to let him continue independently, as it would adversely affect their chances in the upcoming election.

Mr Ahenkorah highlighted Alan Kyerematen’s extensive political experience, spanning the entire Fourth Republic, and stressed his significant influence across the country.

Asenso-Boakye fans host ‘kokonte’ party after NPP primary victory to ‘spite’ Ken Agyapong

Member of Parliament for the Bantama Constituency, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has revealed the rationale behind his supporters organizing a ‘konkonte’ party to celebrate his recent victory in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries.

The motivation, as explained by the MP, stemmed from negative remarks made by Kennedy Agyapong (Assin Central MP), who attempted to belittle him by referring to his late mother’s occupation.

“When Honourable [Ken Agyapong] came, he was denigrating the job of my mother that fed many people in the community and he said that my mother is a kokonte seller, so it infuriated [people],” Asenso-Boakye explained during an interview on Starr FM’s Starr Chat on Thursday, February 1, 2024.

He clarified that his late mother actually sold rice balls, known locally as “omu tuo,” not kokonte.

Asenso-Boakye pointed out that Ken Agyapong’s attempt to demean his late mother’s work angered his supporters and constituents, prompting them to organize the ‘kokonte’ party as a triumphant response to celebrate his victory over Ralph Agyapong.

“I think it doesn’t matter whether it’s omu tuo or kokonte; they are all local foods that are prepared and sold. So a lot of people were very upset in the community. Market women, widows; my mother was a widow, and given the sacrifices that my mother made to make sure that I had a very decent self… that is why some people decided to have the kokonte party, and it was very massive,” he remarked.

Asenso-Boakye, who also serves as the Minister for Works and Housing, secured a commanding victory in the January 27 contest with 78.22% of the total votes cast, amounting to 650 votes. On the contrary, Mr. Agyapong garnered 181 votes, representing 21.78% of the overall vote count.

During the heated campaign, Ken Agyapong, the current Member of Parliament for Assin Central, and former NPP flagbearer contestant, leveled allegations of corruption against Asenso-Boakye. In response, the MP dismissed all the allegations as baseless.

Breaking the 2: New Independent candidate wants NPP, NDC gone

Aspiring independent presidential candidate, George Twum-Barima-Adu has launched his 2024 presidential election campaign, with the goal of challenging the dominance of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

He introduced his campaign under the slogan “breaking the 2” and the motto “yee gye aye no yie,” meaning “we are taking over governance to make it work for all.”

He also outlined his plans to eradicate the menace of galamsey in the country.

According to him intends to establish alternative livelihoods, including carbon credit harvesting and the creation of a hemp industry, specifically for the youth engaged in galamsey and others interested in these sectors.

Additionally, he proposed the enforcement of existing laws and the introduction of new legislation where necessary to address any existing loopholes.

“We need to break the foothold the NDC and the NPP have had in Ghana. It is now clear than ever that until we break ourselves from the two non-performing conjoined twins, we shall continue to have presidents that serve their parties and supporters and not the totality of Ghanaians,” he said.

Highlighting the failure of the two major political parties over the past 32 years to fulfill promises made to improve the lives of Ghanaians, Twum-Barima-Adu emphasized the need for Ghanaians to break away from the dominance of the NPP and the NDC.

He criticized the heads of state under the fourth Republic for prioritizing their own interests and those of their supporters while neglecting the broader needs of the country.

According to Twum-Barima-Adu, breaking the stronghold of the NDC and NPP is essential to elect leaders who serve the entirety of the Ghanaian population.

Describing the NPP and NDC as two sides of the same coin, Twum-Barima-Adu accused them of exploiting the country for personal gain.

To address this, he outlined his policies, including the sale of non-profitable state enterprises, a thorough review of public procurement and contracts to ensure value for money, and the downsizing of the government.

Twum-Barima-Adu emphasized that his administration would require government entities, including State Owned Enterprises, to seek approval through government review before entering into contracts.

He also pledged to reduce public expenditure by adhering to the constitutionally approved number of 19 cabinet ministers, with a total ministerial count limited to 63.

  • You can’t wait for an election year to introduce major Electoral Reforms – NDC to EC

You can’t wait for an election year to introduce major Electoral Reforms – NDC to EC

The National Democratic Congress’ Director of Elections, Dr. Omane Boamah, has asserted that the Electoral Commission (EC) cannot conduct the upcoming year’s election in November due to a delayed proposal.

Dr. Boamah emphasizes that major electoral reforms should not be introduced in an election year, especially after a problematic District Level (Assembly) Elections marked by numerous postponements, ballot paper shortages, and complicity among election officers.

On Monday, January 29, the NDC supported changing the national election day but proposed initiating the reform in 2028. This decision followed an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting discussing the EC’s proposal.

Dr. Boamah, in a Facebook post, criticized the EC for waiting seven years after 2016 to revisit the election date issue, only to bring it up when there are just ten clear months until the December 07 presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana.

“You don’t wait for an election year to introduce major Electoral Reforms: a year in which the EC has so much to do after an abysmal District Level (Assembly) Elections characterised by postponements after postponements, shortage of ballot papers, some Election officers complicity among others,” he added.

He questioned why the EC did not address these matters in the years following 2016 or after the 2020 elections, emphasizing the impracticality of introducing major electoral reforms in an election year when the EC is already burdened.

“Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission’s calendar of programmes and activities for the upcoming elections is not yet ready; hence, could not be released to political parties,” he added.

Dr Boamah queried why the EC waited for January to end without stakeholders having the electoral calendar for the 2024 elections.

“Why did the EC not introduce these discussions, adjustments, and amendments in 2017, 2018, 2019, or better still, why not after the 2020 elections? As in, introducing the subject matter in 2021, 2022, and 2023?”

“This amendment of a non-entrenched clause requires two-thirds of MPs to pass, meanwhile the MPs themselves must be in their constituencies for some parts of this year campaigning, facilitating the registration of voters when the EC finally decides. Not to think of the duration of the process and other germane issues the EC must
bring to the front burner,” he added.

Moreover, Dr. Boamah points out that the EC has not released the calendar of programs and activities for the upcoming elections, making it challenging for political parties to prepare.

He urged the EC to amend Article 112 (4) of the 1992 constitution, highlighting the logistical challenges involved in the process, especially with MPs needing to be in their constituencies for campaigning and voter registration.

In summary, Dr. Omane Boamah criticizes the EC’s timing and approach to electoral reforms, advocating for a more strategic and timely implementation to ensure a smooth electoral process.

  • Joyce Bawah Mogtari writes on Cecilia Dapaah’s case

Joyce Bawah Mogtari writes on Cecilia Dapaah’s case

We have been stating for years that John Mahama has been a victim of extreme prejudice and political propaganda led sadly by a man whose sole aim was to become president at all costs.

This he could only achieve by destroying his predecessor, a good man, a very patriotic Ghanaian, Nana Akufo-Addo, in the past touted as his friend and a good colleague on the other side of the political divide in parliament.

Recall the Ford vehicle issue and the accusations of corruption against Mr Mahama by the NPP. Let me also mention the bus branding ‘scandal’, which again led to serious accusations, mass mobilisation and condemnation by the NPP and then-candidate Akufo-Addo.

These are two significant examples of how corruption and graft were used as political leverage to justify the claim that the NDC and its leadership were incompetent and incapable of managing the country’s affairs.

It is worth noting that today, Akufo Addo and Bawumia are in power, but they have yet to be able to prove any of these claims. From the actions and omissions of their government, it is obvious to Ghanaians that they are corrupt and comfortable associating with corruption.

The level of dishonesty and disregard for the Ghanaian people by this NPP Government is unprecedented and gravely unimaginable.

This president promised to put his presidency on the line to end galamsey at a time when it was axiomatic that they were and are heavily involved in it. This is manifestly evident in Frimpong Boateng’s report, bearing in mind that the president himself commissioned this work.

How the former Minister has since been treated in the aftermath of the leaked report is now a matter of public record and needs no reiteration.

That galamsey is perpetrated by members of the president’s team and government is confirmed, and it has been established that some NPP members have been using expensive mining equipment without authorisation, raping the state of its natural resources, and destroying our water bodies; whilst Akufo Addo looks on unconcerned.

You may recall the regrettable will of the late Sir John, who left forest concessions, properties, and state lands to his family upon his passing. What is the current status of this matter? Why has the President yet to take action? We are eagerly waiting for the President’s response. Galamsey is still ongoing, causing damage to our water bodies.

Let me also remind you of the recent scandal involving Cecelia Dapaah. This case has only reinforced the accusations of corruption against President Akufo-Addo.

As every Ghanaian predicted, the case has ended. A court ruling has ordered that all the hard currency and amounts in the bank be returned to Cecilia Dapaah.

This decision is a travesty that we are all struggling to understand. The amount of money involved pales in comparison to any alleged corruption claims or allegations under President Mahama.

The OSP has ultimately truncated one of the biggest scandals of all time and an irrefutable opportunity for this Government to prove itself as one willing and able to deal with corruption.

The inability or the desire to fight corruption vehemently has conferred on Akufo-Addo the title of a clearing agent. As he predicted, his ‘dear’ Cecilia Dapaah has been cleared, and what little integrity she has left will be for history to judge.

Mr Mahama was tough enough on corruption, and many instances confirm this. All the allegations of corruption during his first term were actuated by malice and by a trumpeted campaign carefully hatched by the NPP, particularly Akufo Addo and Bawumia, to taint and tarnish the unblemished character of President Mahama.

Ghanaians should be outraged at the mismanagement of the country and join the fight for change to rescue the nation from a failed government.

  • EC, political parties to deliberate on date for 2024 elections

EC, political parties to deliberate on date for 2024 elections

On Monday, January 29, the Electoral Commission (EC) is scheduled to convene with various political parties at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting to continue discussions on its proposal to change the date for the general elections.

The proposed amendment suggests shifting the date for both Presidential and Parliamentary elections from December 7 to November 7.

The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed opposition, citing concerns that the proposed timeline may not provide the EC with sufficient time to organize a seamless election.

In contrast, sources within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) suggest that the party’s leadership is still deliberating on the matter before arriving at a decision.

In a noteworthy development, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reversed its earlier decision to boycott IPAC meetings. The party communicated this reversal in a statement dated Sunday, January 28, 2024, signed by its General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey.

IPAC meetings play a crucial role in facilitating a platform for political parties to review election-related activities and policies, express grievances officially, and contribute constructive inputs.

Additionally, IPAC serves as an advisory body to the Electoral Commission.

The NDC’s leadership had boycotted IPAC meetings in 2021, citing perceived bias and lack of transparency during the 2020 general elections. However, in their recent statement, the NDC stated that the decision to rescind the boycott was made through “enhanced consensus-building.”

Taking place on September 29, 2023, the protest featured numerous Ghanaian expatriates residing in the UK who held placards bearing messages outlining the specific issues they urgently want the government to address.

Interestingly, amidst the protest, two individuals holding leadership positions within the NPP UK branch were observed holding placards that appeared to commend the government for its accomplishments.
