Motorbike accident near Tono Riverbank leaves two dead

Farmers near the Tono riverbank in the Kasena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region discovered two bodies on Friday morning.

Investigations suggest that the victims were riding a motorcycle from Navrongo to Chaina on the night of Thursday, February 20, when they lost control and plunged into the dam.

Local authorities were notified, and the police arrived to recover the bodies, which were later taken to Navrongo Hospital.

The deceased were identified as residents of Chaina in the Chaina-Paga District, who had traveled to Navrongo and were returning home when the incident occurred.

Despite the presence of barricades designed to prevent motorcycles from accessing the riverbank, riders frequently bypass them, contributing to frequent accidents in the area.

  • Former Minister slams Navrongo man for burying dad in a Toyota Corolla

Former Minister slams Navrongo man for burying dad in a Toyota Corolla

Former Upper East Regional Minister Tangoba Abayage has criticized businessman Norbert Atodio for his unconventional burial of his late father inside a Toyota Corolla. Abayage firmly condemned the act, labeling it as morally unjust and raising concerns over societal values.

The former minister expressed disbelief that someone of Atodio’s stature would overlook the opportunity to address community challenges and instead use a car as a casket.

In a Facebook post on May 28, 2023, she questioned Atodio’s lack of major social interventions within his immediate community of Doba and Navrongo at large, emphasizing that this choice demonstrated a lack of moral conscience.

“People say he’s rich; I don’t know because I’ve never directly encountered him. For someone of his caliber, I’m yet to hear of any major social interventions he’s conducted for his immediate community, Doba, or Navrongo at large; I may be corrected.

“For such a man to drive a whole car with a dead body inside underground smacks of a person who’s morally unjust to the society he sits in to make his money. I know his station, his community, and have been shown some members of his immediate family and I’m wondering how any man with a right moral conscience will overlook all these that immediately surround him to do what he’s just done,” she said.

She argued that given his financial status, it was disheartening to witness such a display of moral bankruptcy where a valuable resource like a car was used as a burial container.

The former Regional Minister suggested that the money could have been utilized to establish a herbal training center to honor his father‘s legacy as a powerful herbalist. Alternatively, she argued that the funds could have been directed toward revitalizing his ailing radio station or undertaking other humanitarian projects.

“I’m told his dad was a very powerful herbalist whose work attracted a lot of foreigners (he became a beneficiary of his father’s great legacy). Which better way than to have told the dead dad, he’ll rather use the money for a car to build a lasting legacy of herbal training center to honor him?

“Could he have chosen to use the funds to revamp his ailing station and restructure it to perform top-notch in honor of his dad? Could he have done any other humanitarian project with that money in honor of his dad?

“Yes, he could. But he didn’t, he rather chose to bury his dad’s legacy in a tomb. That for me is morally wrong and on that basis, I condemn this singular act of Mr. Atodio.

“No, this doesn’t make you a hero at all, it makes you morally bankrupt,” she added.

Businessman Dr. Norbert, over the weekend, buried his late father in a white Toyota Corolla despite caution from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Dr. Norbert, before his father’s burial, sought permission from the EPA but was denied as the outfit stated the action broke environmental laws.

The businessman, however, followed through with the initial plan of burying his father in a car because of the bond the two shared.

In a video sighted on UTV Ghana’s official Twitter page, the deceased was said to have been laid in a reclined front passenger seat and driven into his grave on the outskirt of the town.

According to the Upper East Correspondent for UTV, Alhassan Abdul Washeed, Dr. Norbert, who is a medical practitioner in Navrongo was invited by the EPA, Kassena Nankana Municipal Assembly, and the National Security to caution him but the former refused.

It is also suspected that Dr. Norbert could be directed to dig up his father’s grave for flouting the rules and pleas of authorities.

  • Jomoro MP reshapes 17-km road

    Jomoro MP reshapes 17-km road

The Member of Parliament, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has renovated a 17-kilometre road in the Jomoro District of the Western Region.

The 17-kilometre road links these communities to towns and villages but the deplorable nature compelled most activities to ground to a halt.

Due to the nature of the road, pupils had to trek on this 17-kilometre road to and from school, farm produce were stuck in the bushes since Okada, pragia (tri-cycle) and vehicles that were supposed to convey them refused due to the nature of the road.

To solve this, MP for Jomoro toured and inspected these areas to ascertain the extent of the damage.

The MP, after the tour, promised to do what she could to help put the road in good shape.

The residents were full of praise for the MP when she promised to reshape the road for them.

They explained that when the road is reshaped it will allow okaka and other vehicles to ply  the road to make their living a better one.

The residents expressed gratitude to the MP for showing motherly love to them.

They said they carry expectant mothers on the road to health center because no vehicle was able to ply the road but thanks to the MP, the road is now motorable for them.

They explained that the former MP, Paul Essien, was there while campaigning with a promise of constructing the road for them, only for him to turn them down after they had given him their votes.

They added that even though Madam Affo-Toffey’s government is not in power, she has been able to fix and reshape the road for them.

Therefore, they pledged that nothing will prevent them from campaigning and voting for her to continue her stewardship.

The residents were of the view that political parties do not belong to an individual neither are they individual property, therefore they will vote for whoever would help them and that is exactly what they are going to do for Madam Affo-Toffey come 2024.

When asked what she would do to get the road tarred completely, the MP said such roads are beyond her capacity as an MP but she will channel it through the Roads Ministry to see what can be done.

She explained that, already, she has started talking to the sector minister on some of the deplorable roads in her constituency so the road in question would be added to it.

  • Viral picture of “magical woman” creates fear, panic in Tumu area

A viral picture circulating on social media about an alleged magical woman has created fear and panic among the people in Tumu and the Sissala area.

The mystery behind the picture stipulates that the woman possessed the magical powers of touching people and vanishing with them, which the security in the Sissala East has dispelled.

This follows days and weeks of fear caused by the alleged presence of the woman in the Sissala District, scaring most people from going to their farms.

Some parents even restricted their children from going to school.

In the viral picture, sighted by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the said woman is seen carrying a sack of loads, walking and holding a long stick. She wears a sweater, with a cover cloth over it.

The accompanying picture has an attached audio voice in the Sissali language warning residents to stay away from assisting the old woman if she sought help to carry her load.

On Sunday, October 09, 2022, a woman, named Tabsoba, was mistakenly identified by residents in Sakai, Kowie, and the Tumu township as the woman in the viral picture in circulation.

A milling crowd followed her to the Ghana Burkina-Faso border with the Sissala East.

When security officials, led by Chief Superintendent William Essah of the Ghana Immigration Service in the Tumu border interrogated her, she spoke in the Moshie language through an interpreter where she mentioned her name as Madam Tabsoba.

Chief Supt Essah told the Ghana News Agency (GNA), that Tabsoba said: “I came to Ghana through Hamile during the farming season to Wa and walked for 20 days to Tumu from Wa looking for what I will eat.

“Everywhere, I reached and needed water to bathe or drink, I got beaten for reasons I do not know,” she told a team of security persons at the border.

According to Chief Supt Essah, when a search was conducted on her, she did not have any form of identity card but had clothes, soap, flour, and a bucket for bathing.

When she was asked why many people claimed anyone who touched her would vanish, she laughed it off and denied the claim.

She indicated that she wanted to go to Leo, a community in Burkina-Faso, which the security people obliged and allowed her to go.

After she related her pathetic story to the security some people at the border supported her with some money while others got her food before leaving for Leo.

After she related her pathetic story to the security, some people at the border supported her with some money while others got her food before leaving for Leo.

Chief Supt. Essah said Tabsoba’s posture suggests that she had mental problems and advised the public against spreading fake news, especially false news about the vulnerable.

He advised the people to go about their businesses including farming since the picture and its accompanying audio were fake.

Meanwhile, Mr Alfred Kutajera, the Manager of Nabina Radio in Navrongo denied ever hearing of a vanishing old lady from Navrongo where the audio is said to have generated.

Some inhabitants of the Sissala West communities of Jeffissi, Pulima, Lilixia, and Kandia told the GNA that the viral picture scared and prevented them from going to their farms.
