Rev Lawrence Tetteh apologises, retracts comments on HIV cases at UG

Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, founder of Worldwide Miracle Outreach, has issued an apology to the University of Ghana following remarks he made on the GTV Breakfast Show on Thursday, October 24, 2024.

In a statement released on October 29, Dr. Tetteh expressed regret for his comments, clarifying that they were not intended to discredit the university, incite fear, promote stigma, or mislead the public.

During the GTV Breakfast Show interview, Dr. Tetteh mentioned a high prevalence of HIV cases among students at the university.

“The number of boys and girls in Legon who are HIV positive, you would have the biggest shock of your life. This is sad, this is sad, and I’m happy I’m saying this on national TV,” he said on October 24.

“Some of these young boys and young girls already on campus are living promiscuous lives, and they have already contracted HIV/AIDS. These are people I have prayed for… and I’m not talking about 10 years, 5 years,” the pastor added.

In an October 24, 2024, press release, the University described Rev. Tetteh’s comments as “unfounded, insensitive, and disappointing,” emphasising that his statements were not supported by any data and could foster fear, stigma, and misinformation.

The institution expressed strong disapproval, calling the remarks distasteful and condemning them, while also requesting an apology from Rev. Tetteh.

In his response today, the clergyman clarified that his remarks were not intended to single out the university or its students but to shed light on the broader challenges facing youth. Rev. Dr. Tetteh explained that his role often involves interacting with individuals who trust him with confidential and sensitive information.

He reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the privacy of those who confide in him and acknowledged the unintended effects of his comments.

“It is rather unfortunate that in referring to the youth with such problems, I linked or associated it with students of the University of Ghana, thereby giving the university community cause for worry,” Rev. Dr. Tetteh stated in his apology.

He offered a retraction of his statements and reiterated his deep regret for any distress caused.

Rev. Dr. Tetteh reaffirmed his respect for the institution and the trust placed in him by those who share personal information with him.

  • UG ‘fights’ Lawrence Tetteh, GTV over unethical, speculative HIV remark

UG ‘fights’ Lawrence Tetteh, GTV over unethical, speculative HIV remark

The University of Ghana (UG) has expressed grave concern over recent statements made by Rev. Lawrence Tetteh on GTV’s Breakfast Show, which aired on Thursday, October 24, 2024.

In his appearance, Rev. Tetteh claimed there was an increase in HIV infections among students at the University of Ghana, attributing the rise to what he described as “widespread promiscuity” among the student body. The University has criticized these remarks as both unfounded and insensitive, pointing out that they are not supported by any available data.

During the GTV panel discussion, Rev. Tetteh stated, “The number of boys and girls in Legon who are HIV positive, you would have the biggest shock of your life. This is sad, this is sad and I’m happy I’m saying this on national TV.” He further elaborated, “Some of these young boys and young girls already on campus are living promiscuous lives and they have already contracted HIV/AIDS. These are people I have prayed for… and I’m not talking about 10 years, 5 years.”

He went on to describe what he perceived as a pattern of infection: “It is sad. And if some of them tell you how they get into it, what is happening is that some of these girls go to the place and when they come back they also connect to the boys and girls there. So, a lot of people think that they are getting a boy, they are getting a girl then it (HIV) spreads.”

In a strongly worded response, UG Management emphasized that public discussions around HIV/AIDS should be rooted in verified facts, not speculative comments. According to the University, “HIV status cannot be determined through counselling or prayer, scientific methods remain the only means for diagnosing infections.” UG stated that baseless statements could mislead the public, increase fear, and contribute to stigmatization and misinformation.

The University noted that linking HIV prevalence to specific demographics or institutions, particularly without evidence, tends to be sensational rather than constructive. “Statements made without data-backed evidence mislead the public and risk amplifying fear, stigma, and misinformation. Handling sensitive health information requires the highest ethical standards,” UG’s statement read.

Furthermore, UG voiced disappointment with Rev. Tetteh’s decision to make these comments on national television without regard for the privacy and dignity of those potentially affected. “It is, therefore, disappointing that Rev. Tetteh, given his standing, would make such comments without regard for the privacy and dignity of those affected,” the University stressed.

In its response, UG highlighted the health measures in place for its student community, including compulsory medical examinations conducted by the University Health Services Directorate and confidential counselling through the Careers and Counselling Directorate. UG reaffirmed its commitment to providing a transformative student experience that prioritizes health, privacy, and support for all students on campus.

“We assure the University community and the public of our support to all students by providing full access to proper medical care and counselling services,” the statement added.

UG has urged the media and the public to handle sensitive health topics with a sense of responsibility, focusing on verified facts rather than unsubstantiated claims. It has called for an apology and a retraction from both Rev. Tetteh and GTV, expressing displeasure over the way the discussion was handled during the Breakfast Show.

Number of boys and girls in Legon who are HIV positive shocking – Lawrence Tetteh

Founder and President of the World Miracle Outreach, Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, has expressed deep concern over the increasing rates of HIV/AIDS infections in Ghana.

During a panel discussion on GTV on Thursday, October 24, 2024, he highlighted the troubling rise of HIV cases among students, attributing it to prevalent promiscuity.

Dr. Tetteh specifically noted the surprisingly high levels of infections at the University of Ghana, Legon, calling attention to the urgent need for awareness and prevention measures.

“The number of boys and girls in Legon who are HIV positive, you would have the biggest shock of your life. This is sad, this is sad, and I’m happy I’m saying this on national TV.

“Some of these young boys and young girls already on campus are living promiscuous lives, and they have already contracted HIV/AIDS. These are people I have prayed for… and I’m not talking about 10 years, 5 years,” the pastor said.

He added, “It is sad. And if some of them tell you how they get into it, what is happening is that some of these girls go to the place and when they come back they also connect to the boys and girls there. So, a lot of people think that they are getting a boy, they are getting a girl, then it (HIV) spreads.”

The Ghana AIDS Commission has raised serious concerns over the alarming statistics of HIV/AIDS cases in the country, as outlined in its 2023 National HIV Report.

The report reveals that approximately 50 new infections occur daily across Ghana, and over 218,000 people living with HIV remain unaware of their status.

As reported by Kasapafmonline.com, the data shows that more than 152,000 individuals are currently on anti-retroviral therapy (ART), comprising 36,000 adult males, 109,000 adult females, and 5,000 children.

Of particular concern is the situation in Accra, where a significant portion of infections affect economically active individuals aged 15 and 49.

The report estimates that Ghana’s national adult HIV prevalence for 2023 stands at 1.53%, with approximately 334,095 people living with the virus—of which 316,545 are adults (94.7%) and 17,550 are children (5.3%).

For adults between 15 and 49, the HIV incidence rate for 2023 is estimated at 0.09%, with an anticipated 17,774 new infections, 90.4% of which are among adults and 9.6% among children. Additionally, the report records approximately 12,480 AIDS-related deaths during the year.

  • Kwaku Annan threatens to expose Rev. Lawrence Tetteh and Boadi Nyamekye

Kwaku Annan threatens to expose Rev. Lawrence Tetteh and Boadi Nyamekye

Justice Kwaku Annan, the former host of “The Seat Show” on Net2 TV and now with CTV, has issued a stern warning to Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, President of Worldwide Miracle Outreach (WMO), and Dr. Michael Boadi Nyamekye, General Overseer of The Maker’s House Chapel International.

Annan claims he is prepared to reveal a series of alleged wrongdoings involving the two prominent religious figures.

Annan alleges that Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, while preparing for a crusade in Congo, engaged in an inappropriate act with a woman via WhatsApp. Upon initiating an investigation into the matter, Annan claims Rev. Tetteh contacted Bishop Quaye of Christian Action Faith Ministries.

Subsequently, Rev. Tetteh reportedly withdrew from the public eye, while Bishop Quaye worked to suppress the story at Hot FM. Annan asserts that the bishop met with the radio station’s owner at Trassacco at 5 a.m., successfully burying the story.

Annan has raised further allegations against Rev. Tetteh, questioning his involvement in impregnating a woman in London and his business dealings with gospel musician Sonnie Badu.

“Lawrence Tetteh, have you impregnated someone’s wife in London? What was the business between you and Soni Badu? How much was involved and how much did you take away?” Annan inquired, adding that he is prepared to face any consequences, including imprisonment, to reveal the truth.

In addition to his accusations against Rev. Tetteh, Annan has turned his attention to Dr. Michael Boadi Nyamekye.

While he did not specify the nature of his investigation into Dr. Boadi Nyamekye, Annan warned that by the time he is finished, Dr. Boadi Nyamekye will suffer a significant blow to his credibility. Annan issued a direct message to Dr. Boadi Nyamekye: “Do not try to use my face like a rug to mop the floor. I don’t hate him.”

Annan’s accusations have sparked widespread attention and controversy, highlighting the potential fallout from his promised exposés. The allegations, if substantiated, could have significant repercussions for both religious leaders and their respective ministries.

  • I’ll march to Jubilee House – Lawrence Tetteh declares, if Akufo-Addo doesn’t sign anti-gay bill

Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, the Founder and President of Worldwide Miracle Outreach, has expressed significant dissatisfaction with his fellow religious leaders’ silence regarding the controversial Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

He criticised their apparent lack of response, labelling it “cowardice,” particularly following President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision not to sign the Bill.

Dr. Tetteh has pledged to organise a protest march to the Jubilee House if the President does not approve the bill, contingent upon the Supreme Court’s endorsement of its passage.

“I’ll march to the Jubilee House. I think it’s about time we let politicians know we voted them into power. The cowardice that Christian leaders and religious leaders have been reduced to is a shame and I’m embarrassed by some of our clergymen.

“As much as we are interested in our titles, in the big titles, and in who we are and how long we’ve served, I’m yet to hear certain people speak against these manners. And for me, that is a shame. And so, it starts at home too.

He added, “It starts with the clergymen. It starts with the religious clerics. It starts at the home of the Chief Iman. It starts with the Chairman of the Christian Council. It starts with the Apostolic leaders. It starts with the Apostolic Fathers. It also starts with the Catholics, Methodists, Presbyterians, and Anglicans. But also, beyond that, it starts with the charismatic leaders.

“We’ve been too quiet. And as much as we are grumbling, everybody wants to impress certain people and that nonsense, for me, must stop.”

The Presidency has formally requested that Parliament to refrain from sending the anti-gay bill for approval, citing legal concerns. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, criticised this decision by the President.

On February 28, 2024, Parliament passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Act, 2024, criminalising LGBTQ+ activities, promotion, advocacy, and funding.

Offenders may face imprisonment from 6 months to 3 years, while promoters and sponsors could face 3 to 5 years’ imprisonment.

Currently, there’s a deadlock between the Executive and Legislative branches over the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

Legal challenges have been mounted by two private legal practitioners, Richard Dela Sky and Gender Activist Dr. Amanda Odoi, seeking the annulment of the bill.

The Supreme Court adjourned Richard Sky’s application, seeking a declaration of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill as null and void, to May 17, 2024.

The adjournment, as ruled by the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, is to enable counsel for the plaintiff to “file a fresh motion paper with a supporting affidavit and statement of the case.”

Counsel for the first defendant, Thaddeus Sory, suggested to the court that the applicant be given time to amend paragraphs five and seven of his applications to sync with his reliefs.

Paragraph five of the applicant’s writ is seeking “an order restraining the Speaker of Parliament and the Clerk to Parliament from presenting The Human and Sexual Values Bill, 2024 to the President of the Republic for his assent.”

Reverend Lawrence Tetteh has voiced his opinion on LGBTQ+ matters, referring to it as “nonsense” asserting that it cannot be embraced in certain parts of the world.

Speaking on GTV, the renowned clergyman, known for his candid expressions, particularly highlighted that LGBTQ+ issues would face strong opposition in countries like Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.

Addressing the controversial topic, Rev. Tetteh questioned whether the introduction of LGBTQ+ initiatives is justified solely based on poverty considerations.

He strongly emphasized that cultural, religious, and traditional values in various societies, including Ghana, do not align with the acceptance of homosexuality.

“This is nonsense cannot be taken to Kuwait, cannot be taken to Saudi Arabia. It cannot be taken to certain parts of the world. Does it mean that because of poverty any junk should be placed on us? Homosexuality, our cultural value doesn’t accept it, our religious values doesn’t accept it and traditional norms do not accept it,” he added.

On Wednesday, February, 28 2024, parliament approved an On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, Parliament approved an amendment to the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, introducing penalties, including up to six months of custodial sentence for those found guilty of aiding, facilitating, encouraging, or promoting LGBTQ activities.

Meanwhile, president Akufo-Addo is yet to assent to the anti-gay bill passed by parliament.

President Akufo-Addo has rejected three bills passed by the House last year, citing their status as private members’ bills and their impact on the Consolidated Fund.

Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has communicated Parliament’s readiness to override President Akufo-Addo’s potential veto of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

Dr Ato Forson emphasized Parliament’s dedication to fulfilling its duties regardless of any unconstitutional actions taken by President Akufo-Addo.

  • Know when to make prophecies public – Lawrence Tetteh to prophets

The Founder and President of World Wide Miracle, Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, has urged fellow prophets to exercise discretion in delivering their prophetic messages, particularly as the 31st-night church services approach.

Emphasizing the sensitivity of private prophecies, he advised that such messages should be handled privately.

Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issue with Kemmini Amanor, Dr. Lawrence Tetteh cautioned against delivering doom prophecies, specifically those predicting death or accidents.

As prophets gear up to share their forecasts for 2024, he stressed the importance of handling certain prophecies privately.

In response to concerns about prophets causing fear through prophecies, the Police have reminded the public, especially the religious community, about the law on publishing false news.

The Police highlighted the need for compliance with the law and expressed appreciation for faith-based groups’ adherence to regulations, contributing to a society free from unnecessary panic and fear.

The Police statement urged religious communities to practice their faith within the legal framework, maintaining respect for the rights and freedoms of others and the public interest.

The directive, initially issued in 2021, led prophets like Nigel Gaisie to modify the delivery of their prophecies to align with police guidelines.

While Gaisie adhered to the directive in 2021, cautioning against death prophecies, he emphasized his commitment to prophesying with confidence and clarity.

However, other prophets, such as Rev. Owusu Bempah, expressed discontent with the directive, cautioning against enforcing laws on prophets and their activities in Ghana.

Rev. Owusu Bempah urged the Inspector General of Police not to touch pastors, preachers, and prophets, warning that such actions might have dire consequences for the nation.

He stressed the importance of leaving religious leaders to focus on their work and encouraged the government to address any illegalities directly.

These developments shed light on the ongoing dialogue between religious leaders and law enforcement regarding the delivery and regulation of prophetic messages in Ghana.

  • I am no more excited about the Nat’l Cathedral project – Lawrence Tetteh

I am no more excited about the Nat’l Cathedral project – Lawrence Tetteh

Founder and President of World Wide Miracle, Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, has reconsidered his support for the National Cathedral project, expressing reservations after learning of corruption allegations and the resignation of senior clergymen from the board.

Mr Tetteh, once excited about the project, now deems it unwise to proceed, citing discomfort among his colleagues.

“I was very excited about it initially but having heard some of the things, if my colleagues there are very uncomfortable I think I will be very unwise to want it done,” he told TV3’s Keminni Amanor on Sunday December 31 edition of Hot Issues.

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and Rev. Eastwood Anaba, prominent clergymen, resigned due to the government’s failure to appoint an independent accounting firm to audit funds allocated to the National Cathedral.

Their resignation statement emphasized the absence of a crucial audit to restore public confidence, leading to their conscientious withdrawal from the Board of Trustees.

“Despite our prayers, best hopes and wishes, unfortunately, a needed audit to help restore public confidence and trust in this consequential project has not been enacted to the best of our knowledge. Since January 2023, we awaited news to no avail, regarding the finding of the audit.

“We, therefore, regret that as a matter of conscience and faith, we hereby submit to you our resignation from the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral, ” portions of the statement said.

In January 2023, Duncan-Williams and Anaba advocated for a temporary halt to the cathedral’s construction until an audit could be conducted.

They emphasized the challenging economic climate in Ghana, proposing transparency through an independent audit by a nationally recognized accounting firm.

Responding to the resignations, Dr. Paul Opoku-Mensah, Executive Director of the National Cathedral Project, clarified that both clergymen were aware of the engagement with Deloitte for the audit.

He highlighted their participation in meetings, press releases, and updates on the audit process, debunking claims of insufficient information.

Opoku-Mensah also revealed the rejection of the clergymen’s resolution by the Board, citing redundancy and undue politicization linked to the 2024 elections.

Despite attempts to politicize the project, the Secretariat reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and collaboration with auditors to complete the work.

  • Ebony’s demise brought a breakthrough to her family – Dr Lawrence Tetteh

Ebony’s demise brought a breakthrough to her family – Dr Lawrence Tetteh

The Worldwide Miracle Outreach’s founder and president, Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, says the death of Ghanaian dancehall/afrobeats artist, Ebony, brought her family a breakthrough.

In his opinion, the female singer was still in the early stages of her career and faced financial instability, as did her family.

“Ebony had nothing, you can quote me anywhere, she was not 21 years yet when she died, her biggest contract with Bullet and the team had not materialized before she died, Ebony had also never gone to Europe before when she died.”

“The only privilege she had to go abroad was what connected me to her at the Hungarian embassy three days after which she died, so she never really had a breakthrough, she was in a pipeline for a major breakthrough but it never happened.”

“So when she died, there was nothing at home, the truth was that it was rather the death of Ebony that even opened certain doors,” he said.

Dr Lawrence Tetteh played a crucial role in arranging Ebony’s funeral, especially when he realized the family needed assistance.

“I did help financially; in fact, I took charge of the funeral. Everything concerning Ebony’s funeral was planned in my house; everybody came to my house, her record label, MUSIGA, her family, they were all in my house.”

“We had breakfast, lunch, and dinner in my house; we became like a family. Ebony’s father became like my brother. Anytime he flares up, I’m the only one who could calm him down, and I took him to every place and I introduced him to all the Presidential leaders.”

“And then also, I helped in making sure we secured the forecourt of the State House for the funeral. I also bought and paid for her coffin,” he recalled.

The death of Ebony did not surprise Lawrence Tetteh; rather, he was thrilled that she had received salvation 72 hours before she died.

“Shock is an understatement. I thanked God rather for her, that at least she met Christ 72 hours before she was called into glory,” he said.

On February 8, 2018, while travelling from Sunyani to Accra after seeing her mother, Ebony tragically died in an accident. She died eight days before her 21st birthday.

The fatal incident also claimed the lives of her assistant and longtime friend Franklina Yaa Nkansah Kuri and a soldier named Atsu Vondee.

The driver, Phinehas, who lives in Teshie, Greater Accra, was the only person to survive the collision.

According to a social media post after the meeting, Ablakwa said: “the deliberations were extensive, transparent and frank in the best interest of our dear nation and our Lord’s Kingdom.”

Among the clergymen in photos sighted by GhanaWeb were Rev. Sam Korankye Ankrah of Royal House Chapel International and Reverend Lawrence Tetteh of the Worldwide Miracle Outreach.

The group of clergymen, numbering six, were captured in photos in deep discussion with Ablakwa before they later offered special prayers for the MP seeking “for the Lord’s fortification in the pursuit of what they described as my exemplary parliamentary oversight,” the post added.

Ablakwa has over the past few months waged a dogged campaign aimed at pointing out issues of corruption and corporate governance breaches in the construction of the Cathedral project.

He has taken the crusade to social media mostly and also gotten a Parliamentary motion for a probe into the project along with other Members of the Minority Caucus.

    Read Ablakwa’s full post below:

The deliberations were extensive, transparent and frank in the best interest of our dear nation and our Lord’s Kingdom.

I also received special prayers asking for the Lord’s fortification in the pursuit of what they described as my exemplary parliamentary oversight.

I am profoundly grateful to these revered ministers of the gospel.

International evangelist and president of Worldwide Miracle Outreach, Dr Lawrence Tetteh has paid a heartfelt tribute to renowned American Pentecostal Evangelist Morris Cerullo who passed away in the early hours of Saturday, July 11, 2020.

Recounting the numerous encounters he has had with the late Morris Cerullo, Dr Tetteh referred to him as his spiritual father and mentor.

He said several doors were opened to him through the Mission to London organized in the 80s and 90s by Dr Cerullo.

“The world has lost one of the generals in the faith who was a father to many modern preachers of this generation and a true man of God. Papa! Rest well in the bosom of the Lord…”

Appearing on Accra based Net2 television on Wednesday morning [December 4, 2019] to promote an upcoming crusade at Madina Zongo junction, Dr Tetteh said some of the things Mr Agyapong has been talking about on television and radio shows his “boldness.”

Dr Lawrence Tetteh vows to ordain Kwamena Idan as a Pastor

Mr Agyapong has been on a crusade this week putting out what he claims was a dossier investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, has been working with which contains names and personal details of people who are on the watch list of the investigative journalist.

The dossier he claims contains personal data, addresses, telephone numbers, names of spouses and investments the names on the list have been making at various financial institutions in Ghana and abroad since 2012.

Some of the names on the list he claims were people the investigative journalist has been compensating on a monthly basis.

Mr Agyapong has been putting out the names on the watch list since Monday and commenting on it, whilst appearing on Net2 after Mr Agyapong had finished with his programme Wednesday morning, Dr Tetteh said, “the things he [Agyapong] is saying here, how many of us can say it.”

He said it was, therefore, his prayer that God will continue to use him [Agyapong] and that when he finishes his work as a legislator, he should become a preacher.

Oral sex is unbiblical Dr. Lawrence Tetteh condemns act

Dr Tetteh said most prominent people in Ghana are “very theological minded.”

Reacting to references to him as someone who is able to quote Bible verses without referring to the Bible, Mr Agyapong sarcastically said he did Bible Knowledge (BK) and Religious Studies (RS) in secondary school and Theology in the university.

The prayer for Mr Agyapong Wednesday morning came after he had as usual appeared on the television station on his crusade of what he describes as “exposing” the investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Dr Tetteh on his part had appeared at the television station to promote his upcoming crusade at the forecourt of Oman FM at Madina Zongo junction which is taking place on December 13th and 14th.

He said for a long time no big crusade has been organised in the Madina Zongo junction area.

He said they have been doing crusades in a lot of places in Ghana but recently realised that many churches have not paid attention to the Madina area even though there are many churches in the area.
