  • CAF Confederation Cup: Former Kotoko forward Eric Bekoe cautions Hearts of Oak to avoid complacency against Real Bamako

Former Asante Kotoko striker Eric Bekoe has urged Hearts of Oak to remain focused ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup against AS Real Bamako.

Hearts will be looking to overturn their 3-0 first leg deficit against AS Real Bamako in the second leg of their CAF-inter club competition.

The MTN FA Cup champions will welcome the Malian side to the Accra Sports stadium in the return leg on Sunday.

“The players of Hearts should psych their mind and have a winning mentality going into this game. If they are to have this winning mentality, I know they can overturn this tie but complacency would be the killer if they are not well concentrated,” Bekoe told Happy FM.

“If they should score the first goal and the fans start hailing and it gets into their head and become complacent, they would receive the shock of their lives.”

He added, “The players need to bring out their all and fight like there is no tomorrow.”

“They need to have that mentality and the fans need to come support them.”

  • Hearts of Oak will perform wonders against ASR Bamako on Sunday – Bernard Dong Bortey

The Phobian Club will host the Malian club in the return leg at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ahead of the game, Bortey, who won the Confederations Cup with Hearts of Oak believes the Rainbow Club can turn around the scoreline.

According to him, it is not over, adding that his former side will bounce back to win the game.

“I am not giving up because this is Hearts of Oak,” he toldAsempa FM.

“I know these players don’t have the spirit to play for Hearts of Oak but I am pleading with the management to give me access to speak to the players.

“We did it against St, Georges in Obuasi and I will ensure we repeat that on Sunday against ASR Bamako.

“We must encourage the players because that is all that they need and for the supporters, they should come in their numbers to support the team.

“There will be a miracle on Sunday because this is Hearts of Oak,” he added.

The game has been scheduled to kick off at 15:00GMT.

However, several coaches have been linked to the club in the past weeks.

The meeting is expected to continue today with the hierarchy of the club bent on hiring the services of the veteran gaffer who led the Black Galaxies to secure qualification to the 2023 CHAN tournament.

Meanwhile, Serbian trainer, Slavko Matic has been linked to the club as well but Annor Walker stands tall to be named the new trainer for Hearts of Oak.

  • Hearts of Oak’s recent performance in Africa breaks my heart – Ishmael Addo

Hearts of Oak legend, Ishmael Addo says it’s painful to watch the club endure failure during their campaign in Africa.

The Ghana Premier League powerhouse having dominated the African continent in the late 2000s winning the Champions League and the Confederations Cup have failed to perform in recent times.

Hearts of Oak last season were booted out of the Champions League following a 6-2 aggregate loss to Wydad Casablanca.

In the Confederations Cup, the Phobians suffered a disappointing 4-2 aggregate defeat to JS Saoura.

In the second round of the first leg of the preliminary games of the 2022/23 CAF Confederations Cup, Hearts of Oak suffered a 3-0 defeat to Real Bamako over the weekend.

Addo, who was the top scorer in the Ghana Premier League three times with Hearts, isn’t happy with how his former club has regressed.

“It’s painful to watch Hearts of Oak play in Africa these days,” the retired striker said in an interview with Joy Sports.

“It’s really painful because you sit back after putting the team up there. You left with the idea that they would be better than where you actually put the team but you realize that the team keeps coming down and dropping.

“Even though we had our time and left, we still have something towards the team, we still have this passion, we still want the team to achieve better than what we achieved but now they are taking a step backwards.”

Addo was part of the last Hearts side to dominate the continent, having won the treble of Ghana Premier League, FA Cup, and CAF Champions League in 2000.

The Accra-based side also won the maiden edition of the CAF Confederations Cup in 2004 after beating domestic rivals Asante Kotoko in the final on penalties.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak will hope to overturn a three-goal deficit when they host Real Bamako at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

  • Former Hearts of Oak management member Haruna Futtah launches scathing attack on leaders of club

Former deputy chairman of the National Chapters Committee (NCC) of Hearts of Oak, Aziz Haruna Futtah as described the current management of the club as the ‘worst ever’.

The Phobians and Samuel Boadu parted ways following a poor start to the 2022/23 league season and was replaced by former Asante Kotoko coach, David Ocloo.

According to the staunch Hearts supporter, the decision to fire coach Samuel Boadu without any competent replacement was the wrong call ahead of their Africa campaign

“I am not against the sacking of Samuel Boadu but they needed to get a replacement in place,” Futtah told Nhyira FM as quoted by footballghana.com.

“You sacked a coach without a plan for a successor?

“How can you sack your coach and then hire an assistant coach of Kotoko to lead you to Africa? That was a funny decision.”

He added, “You can line up Messi, Ronaldo and all the best players in the world in this situation, they will mess up.”

“With all due respect to these gentlemen, I can tell you that this is the worst ever [Hearts of Oak] management so far.”

  • Former Hearts of Oak defender Amankwah Mireku not hopeful club will succeed in CAF Confederation Cup

Ex-Hearts of Oak skipper Amankwah Mireku says he is not expecting much from the club ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

The Phobians will travel to Mail to take on Real Bamako on Saturday, October 8, 2022 for the first leg encounter of the second round of the 2022/23 CAF second tier competition.

It will be David Ocloo’s first game in charge of the club after being appointed as an interim coach, taking over from Samuel Boadu who parted ways with Hearts after a slow start to the 2022/23 season.

“I might not say much about confidence but then, I will say that, I am so much interested when it comes to their performance so for me, the most important thing for them to do is that, they should elevate their performance from that of last year,” Mireku told LUV FM.

“But for me, I am not expecting much from them because it’s a new team all together. Football is all about consistency but then, for you to have individual players, then you might not have a team.

“So for me, I think that’s what Hearts of Oak are lacking for now therefore I am not expecting much from them.

“If we could have these players for two-three years, then my expectation will go high,’’ he added.

The return leg will be held at the Accra Sports Stadium on the weekend of October 14-16, 2022.

The winner of the tie will move to the play-off round where they will face one of the 16 losers from the CAF Champions League second round.

  • Next Hearts of Oak coach must have a tough skin – Sam Johnson

Legendary Hearts of Oak player Sam Johnson thinks the team needs a tough-minded coach to change its fortunes.

After two seasons as the club’s coach, Hearts of Oak fired Samuel Boadu on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

During his two years at Hearts of Oak, Samuel Boadu won five trophies, including the Ghana Premier League, two FA Cups, the President’s Cup, and the Super Cup.

Sam Johnson expects the next coach may be under a lot of strain and must be able to live up to the standards set by coach Boadu.

“It will depend on the kind of coach that they will bring because now the pressure will be there. They need somebody who can stand on that pressure, that is the first thing that they have to do,” the former Hearts of Oak defender told Radio Gold.

“Because Phobia pressure is something else so they need an experienced coach, somebody who has been in the terrain so that he will be able to stand when the pressure is coming. But if you sign somebody who cannot stand the pressure, then the players cannot stand the pressure.

“Then it means it is going to be worse than what it used to be so they need somebody who is strong and can stand the pressure of Hearts of Oak.

“They need somebody who is strong and disciplined so that the players will understand exactly what the club means or what it means to play for Hearts of Oak and I think things will go well for them.” Sam Johnson added.

Samuel Boadu was sacked after failing to win a game in three matches in the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League.

His team lost to Aduana Stars and drew with Asante Kotoko and Great Olympics

  • Alhaji Akambi threatens to report W.O Tandoh to Dormaahene over latest accusations, insults

Alhaji Akambi, a member of the Hearts of Oak board, has criticized former team manager W.O. Tandoh for the most recent accusations.

In an interview with Happy FM, the former strategist who is now an assistant coach at Aduana Stars said the team owed him six months’ worth of unpaid wages.

Alhaji Akambi claims he will report the former employer to Dormaahene, the owner and financier of Aduana Stars, in response to that and an insult from W.O. Tandoh.

“W.O. Tandoh used to call us if he was looking for work. He claims that Akanbi and Odotei are useless today. Is he Coach Boadu’s spokesperson?
He’s probably drunk once more. He would be reported to Dormaahene, stated Alhaji Akambi.

W.O Tandoh and Alhaji Akambi have not seen eye to eye since the former resigned from his post as Hearst of Oak team manager last season.

After leaving, he accused Alhaji Akambi of dragging back the club.

  • Samuel Boadu: Hearts exit was long coming, but what next?

“It’s been poor for us,” Kobby Jones, PRO of Hearts’ National Chapters Committee said. “It’s not been as we hoped when the league was about to start. Though our first three matches were very difficult, we were not expecting to play three games and have only two points. That wasn’t the plan, we need to look at it and change things.”

The trophy-laden relationship Hearts had with Boadu has come to an end. Five trophies in 18 months after a run of 11 years without a single one, paints the Boadu era at Hearts, and he leaves with a record.

When his wedding was telecasted live on national television, he became the first Ghana Premier League coach or any in Ghana for that matter, to receive such a gesture. It is one which does not just happen, reserved for the class of a royal family, so, it is a big deal – no matter how anyone looks at it. Not even the legendary Jones Attuquayefio had a gesture of that sort – not to compare the two.

Attuquayefio is in a league of his own – no debate, but even with only one win in his last nine league games, Boadu deserves a seat at the Hearts table as he brought the club what it so much endeared itself with – winning.

The recent few weeks have been devoid of it though, and it is what cut short what looked a promising relationship. One win in nine league games – furnished with late comebacks versus city rivals, Great Olympics and nemesis, Kotoko, certainly does not fit the standards of Hearts.

Samuel Boadu: Hearts exit was long coming, but what next?

“All Hearts of Oak supporters are unhappy with how things are going. We were not expecting the season to start this way. We were expecting it to start well because of the kind of recruitment the board and Togbe Afede did for us. We thought that we have a team good enough to start the league strongly. It hasn’t been the case and we are worried,” Jones told JoySports.

The National Chapters Committee is the official fan group of the club, a different gravy as compared to the vociferous Phobia Tertiary, but both fan groups were united on one front – an occurrence which almost never happens in football.

All rank and file of Phobia foot soldiers wanted Boadu out of the job once it seemed his winning wand had run out of pixie dust, and their calls grew even more confident with the seeming backing of an individual high up the Hearts hierarchy.

“When the board gets to the stage when something has to be done, I’ll force them to take a decision. No one is bigger than the club, including the Board chairman,” Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe said on Nyhira FM.

    A wait too long

The last time Hearts won two games on the bounce happened more than four months ago, after their victory at home to Dreams. The game preceding that was an away 3-0 win at 10-man Accra Lions. Since then, Hearts have posted a record which best represents a mid-table club: D-W-D-L-L-L-L-L-D-D.

Hearts at the end of last season dropped 13 of a possible 15 points from the final five games. The club’s decision to participate in the GHALCA G6 with the Auroras stirred conversation, and the heavy defeats did not help.

There was a sense that fans were beginning to get frustrated with Boadu, and after their defeat to Aduana Stars on the opening day of the season, one summed it up.

“I am not surprised with the result,” the fan who looked to be in his mid 20s said after Aduana’s victory. “You had the chance to have good preparation for the season, but decided to use Auroras instead, and went to play pre-season games with bottom tier sides. I don’t know what they were trying to achieve,” he ended.

Well, whatever Boadu was trying to achieve could not be seen after dropping points in the subsequent games and that was the last straw for him.

Samuel Boadu: Hearts exit was long coming, but what next?

“I mean I think supporters can’t wait longer because the thing is you keep having trust one match, another match, ‘another trust’ – and it’s still going. Now teams are winning matches and we’re dropping points. We need to catch up with them. So the decision the board should look at should be one which helps this club. It’s not all the time you give coaches time when you think things are not happening.

“If you want to turn things around, you need to be decisive with what you do. But of course we [fans] cannot sack the coach, they [board] are the managers. They employed him, they have the KPI with him so they should measure it,” Jones told JoySports just a day before Hearts announced Boadu’s departure.

    What next?

“I want to thank the Hearts of Oak family, the board of directors and Togbe Afede for this opportunity,” was what Boadu said in the draw with Kotoko. He was asked to provide his assessment of the game – the man knew it was coming.

The club announced Samuel Nii Noi – head at Auroras, as interim till a substantive is recruited. The rumour mill has been churning since, with a couple of local media outlets naming Erik Van der Meer as Boadu’s replacement.

Meer, whose last job was with Saudi Arabia’s U20s, has been described as one with ‘proper knowledge and understanding of how a football club should be built and work’ by Vardan Israelyan, President of FC Stal. But the Dutch coach also has vast experience in youth football.

While Hearts recently look to be making some form of effort to revive the Auroras, Van der Meer’s work if confirmed, will be way beyond the youth setup with Hearts, as the cycle of firing and hiring managers has lasted too long at the club without reward.

“Years back when Hearts played a game, you don’t ask if hearts won or lost. You ask how many goals Hearts scored but this isn’t the case now,” Dr. Tamakloe said, giving off a rather sentimental feel during final days of Boadu.

But those glorious days of Hearts have been long gone – way before the Boadu era, and the fans recognize it. “There is a need for proper structure for the team,” was all a fan said when quizzed about the club.

But to be fair, there has been commendable effort to put the club on a different pedestal – with the Pobiman project, construction of a new club secretariat and the commissioning and operationalisation of a commercial center.

But the next step for Hearts, without a doubt, is qualifying to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup. The sacking of Boadu cannot be for the purpose of only winning a couple of premier league games.

With the cost the club is ready to bare administratively for all its projects, there should be a certain standard of effort reflecting on the field, and it starts with playing in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup, a platform the club has been absent from for 18 years.

  • Former Hearts of Oak captain Amankwah Mireku reacts to Samuel Boadu’s sacking

Former captain of Hearts of Oak, Yaw Amankwah Mireku is unhappy about the sacking of coach Samuel Boadu.

The leadership of the Phobians on Tuesday announced the sacking of the former Medeama SC gaffer and his backroom staff after failing to win a game in the new season.

But according to Amankwah Mireku, the club should have been patient with the coach who won five trophies in his two years with the team.

“For me, I wasn’t happy with the news. I don’t think he (Boadu) should’ve been sacked because he won 5 trophies in 2 seasons. This is a club that had won nothing in a decade,” said Amankwah Mireku on Peace FM.

Boadu’s last game was against Asante Kotoko, with the Phobians earning a late draw in Kumasi.

Meanwhile, the club have named U20 coach Nii Noi to be in charge of the club ahead of the game against Gold Stars on Sunday.

  • Samuel Boadu bids emotional farewell to Hearts of Oak

Samuel Boadu has bid farewell to Hearts of Oak after parting ways with the club.

Management of the club relieved Boadu and his entire backroom staff off their duty after a slow start to the 2022/23 Premier League season.

Despite the incident, Samuel Boadu says Hearts has been a family to him, one dear to his heart.

In a tweet, he thanked management for the opportunity given him to lead the club for the past two years.

“To a club and supporters I call family, to a chair I called father, to a mgt I called brothers and to players I called friends ..Tnx for the glorious moments we shared together…I am glad we won together and achieved the unimaginable in 2 years …see you around soon , Phobiaaaa,” coach Boadu wrote.

The Phobians are without a win three games into the season – lost once and drawn twice with the latest being the 1-1 stalemate against Asante Kotoko at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.

Hearts are of the opinion that there is the need for a new direction and the energy to ensure its broader objectives are achieved and it feels the time for that new direction.

Boadu led the Accra-based side to their first league title two seasons ago. He also won back-to-back MTN FA Cups, Super Cup and the 2021 President’s Cup during his time at the club.

  • Asante Kotoko are local champions, says Hearts of Oak legend Charles Taylor

Hearts of Oak legend, Charles Assampong Taylor has taken a swipe at Asante Kotoko, describing his former club as “local champions.”

The Porcupine Warriors made a poor start to the 2022/23 season, having exited the CAF Champions League at the hands of minnows RC Kadiogo after emerging as the champions for the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League.

Kotoko defeated the Burkinabe side 1-0 away but lost by the same scoreline at home, before suffering a penalty shootout defeat to the visitors.

Seydou Zerbo’s side also conceded a late goal to draw with rivals Hearts of Oak on Sunday in the matchday three games at the Baba Yara Stadium after dominating the game.

Fans of the club have been very critical of the referee who officiated the game following a series of controversial penalty calls that were denied.

Reacting to this, Taylor, who won the Ghana Premier League with Kotoko, slammed the club over their recent poor form.

“Asante Kotoko are local champions. They wasted the important penalties against Kadiogo. They should stop demanding penalties against Hearts of Oak, it’s needless,” he said, as quoted by Angel FM.

Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko have also since petitioned the Disciplinary Committee of the Ghana Football Association to take disciplinary actions against the referee.

Taylor was one of the most exciting talents in the Ghana Premier League from the late nineties to the early 2000s.

He was part of Hearts’ famous 64 Battalion that won the treble of league, FA Cup, and CAF Champions League in 2000.

He later crossed carpets to play for Hearts’ bitter rivals Asante Kotoko, in what was a very controversial transfer move.

Taylor is remembered by many Ghanaians for his electric pace and skills on the flanks, having dazzled in his prime. He is also a former top scorer in the Ghanaian league.

  • Drop Dede and Jordan from the Black Stars team – Esme Mends ‘fumes’

Former Hearts of Oak player, Esme Mends has stated candidly that skipper of the Black Stars Dede Ayew and his junior brother, Jordan Ayew must be dropped from the Black Stars squad.

It would be recalled that Dede Ayew who was playing down suggestions that some players are guaranteed spots in the Black Stars team irrespective of their Club form while speaking in an interview with Daily Graphic admonished that apart from senior players no one is guaranteed a place in the squad just yet.

Dede Ayew’s assertion has created huge controversy within the footballing fraternity and on Social media.

Reacting to Dede’s pronouncement in an interview on Hot 93.9Fm’s ‘Focal Sports’ show – hosted by Stonchist D’Blakk Soulja, the former Hearts of Oak player, Esme Mends disagreed with the Captain of the Black Stars.

According to Esme who is now a Coach, “It’s obviously wrong for Dede to say this, very wrong but you see that’s what happens if you entertain people for long.”

Sounding extremely disdained, the legendary former Hearts of Oak player argued that “I believe as a nation we have entertained the Ayew’s for too long a time in the national team, it’s time we drop them from the team.”

Dede together with his junior brother Jordan were part of the Black Stars team that lost 3:0 to Brazil in Ghana’s first friendly match played in France last Friday ahead of the Qatar World Cup.

  • I was not impressed with Steven Mukwala’s performance against Hearts of Oak – Seydou Zerbo

Asante Kotoko head coach, Seydou Zerbo has criticized the performance of striker, Steven Mukwala following their 1-1 draw against Hearts of Oak.

The Porcupine Warriors were held by their bitterest rivals to a 1-1 drawn game at the Baba Yara Stadium in the week three fixtures of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League.

Caleb Amankwah scored late with a brave header to cancel out Mubarik Yussif’s early lead to share the points among the two clubs.

Speaking after the game, the Burkinabe gaffer has admitted his side played to perfection but is disappointed they couldn’t snatch all three points.

He added that he hasn’t been impressed with his Ugandan forward Steven Mukwala’s performance so far and is expecting more from him in their subsequent matches.

“We were all disappointed with our performance last week. We went to right our wrongs and played well but not happy for not getting all three points,” he said.

“With Mukwala, I wouldn’t say I’m ok. He is our leading scorer and his duty is to score. I will not say I’m ok but we will go back to figure out what went wrong and work towards it.

“We are building a new team with new signings, so I’m edging the supporters to be calm and I hope with time, they will adapt to the Kotoko philosophy and playing in front of the huge crowd, and will get back on track,” he added.

  • Blame Hearts of Oak technical team for poor run – Dr Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe

Board member of Hearts of Oak, Dr. Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe has attributed the club’s poor run to the technical team, led by Samuel Boadu.

The Phobians are yet to record a win in the ongoing 2022/23 Ghana Premier League.

In their opener, Samuel Boadu and his charges suffered a 1-0 defeat to Aduana Stars at the Nana Agyemang Badu in Dormaa.

In their second game, Hearts of Oak hosted their city rivals, Great Olympics at the Accra Sports Stadium, and after 90 minutes of action, the game ended 1-1.

The FA Cup champions were hoping to secure their first win of the season when they were hosted by the sworn rivals, Asante Kotoko at the Baba Yara Stadium in the matchday 3 games.

However, Hearts of Oak returned to the capital with just a point.

After three games played, Hearts of Oak sit 13th on the league log with just two points.

According to Dr. Tamakloe, the club’s poor run must be attributed to the technical team despite the board’s ability to recruit the best players in the country.

“If support could recollect, I spoke about the problem Hearts of Oak is facing and as a board, we have done our best for the club,” he told Asempa FM.

“As a club, I can confidently say there is no club in the country whose players and coaches better that Hearts of Oak.

“I am very happy that supporters are realizing that the problem is the technical team and when I made mention of that, I was attacked.

“We have recruited the best players in the country for the technical team and six of these players are with the Black Galaxies but look at the results they are churning out.

“We will leave it for the supporters to judge and see if these quality players are supposed to be churning out such results.

“Years back, when Hearts of Oak play a game, you don’t ask of the scoreline but you rather ask the scoreline but that is not what we are seeing today.

“I hinted on where the problem is and here we are today,” he added.

Samuel Boadu will be hoping to steer the side to a win when they host Bibiani Gold Stars in the matchday four games at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday.

  • Five talking points from Asante Kotoko-Hearts of Oak draw

Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak shared the spoils at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on matchday 3 of the Ghana Premier League.

After a sloppy first half by the two sides, the second half brought life into the game.

Yusif Mubarik gave Kotoko the lead in the 57th minute, scoring from a rebound before Caleb Amakwaah pulled parity for Hearts of Oak on 88 minutes, connecting Suraj Seidu’s freekick.

There have been a lot of talking points after the game as some Kotoko fans were unsatisfied with officiating while local football enthusiasts also shared their concerns regarding the two big clubs in Ghana.

Here are five talking points from Asante Kotoko’s stalemate with Hearts of Oak

    Referee Selom Yao Bless

Referee Selom Yao Bless has grabbed the headlines after the match. Many opined that he made poor decisions that affected the score.

Kotoko fans believe Bless robbed them of two penalties and awarded Hearts a goal which should have been ruled out for offside.

    Both teams lack quality

Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak both sold a lacklustre game to the fans. The cause of both teams’ subpar performance has been blamed on quality.

Neutrals and the clubs’ fans appear to agree that the two biggest clubs in the country have a long way to go in terms of matches with the continent’s big clubs.

    Attendance exceeded expectation

Asante Kotoko, the home team, were eliminated from the CAF Champions League a week prior to the match. In front of their fans, Kotoko lost on penalties to RC Kadiogo.

Following the defeat, there were doubts that the fans would turn up for the game against Hearts in the same numbers that they did for the game against Kadiogo. But the crowd was massive, and many fans ignored the loss to cheer on the Reds, while Hearts fans filled the away stand.

The atmosphere was fantastic and far exceeded expectations.

Samuel Boadu has lost his touch

Many Hearts of Oak supporters are dissatisfied with the team’s recent results and performance.

Some are calling for Samuel Boadu’s head, claiming that the Boadu who has led the team to five trophies in two years has lost his touch.

Hearts of Oak have yet to win in their first three league games, despite playing subpar football in all three.

    Steven Mukwala

The Ugandan forward was signed to fill the shoes of Kotoko’s top scorer, Franck Etouga Mbella who has departed the club.

Mukwala is yet to prove himself that he is the right choice to replace Etouga who scored 21 goals for the Kotoko last season.

During the match, he had some decent chances but could not bury them. Mukwala is still yet to net his first official goal for Kotoko after three games.

  • Ban him – Kotoko fans petition GFA on social media after referee Yao Bless’ poor performance in Super Clash

Some supporters of Asante Kotoko are urging the Ghana Referees Association to ban referee Selorm Yao Bless from officiating the Super Clash after awarding an ‘offside goal’ to Accra Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Asante Kotoko drew 1-1 with Accra Hearts of Oak in their first game of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season.

Caleb Amankwa scored an offside goal from a set piece to get a late equalizer for Hearts Oak in the matchday three encounter.

Kotoko were denied some penalties in the match as their striker Mukwala was brought down in the box on several occasions with the referee allowing play to continue.

After the game, some disappointed Kotoko fans berated referee Selorm Yao Bless for failing to make bold decisions in the game.

While some called for stiffer punishment for referee Yao Bless just like referee Kenny Paddy who officiated a similar match last season, others also called for his ban.

  • Osei Kuffour details how Hearts of Oak used juju on Charles Taylor, Kotoko coach in Confed Cup

Hearts of Oak won the inaugural CAF Confederations Cup in 2004, defeating Asante Kotoko 8-7 on penalties after the tie ended two-all on aggregate.

The most vivid memory of the second leg at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium was Hearts equalising few minutes after Kotoko coach Hans Dieter-Schmidt substituted Charles Taylor.

Many Kotoko fans still blame the coach’s decision for their defeat. Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak supporters boast that their ‘operations’ regarding the substitution were spot on.

Former Hearts midfielder Emmanuel Osei Kuffour has admitted that they used juju on the manager and believes it worked because Kotoko was led by a white coach.

“Yeah the coach was white not black that’s why it worked. If he were to be black I think he wouldn’t have substituted him but because he was white it worked easily,” he told Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV on YouTube.

“For juju everyone does it but for me I don’t understand why it worked on the white man. Because I’m very sure that it wouldn’t have worked if he were a black man.

He also revealed that during the game, they warned Taylor to walk off the pitch else he will be substituted.

“He was our (former)teammate and the intention wasn’t to fight him. It’s football and we wanted to tell him what’s good for him that he should “leave the pitch. It will be better for you to leave. If you don’t leave, we will let your coach sub you off.”

The first leg of the final ended one-all at the Accra Sports Stadium. Louis Agyemang netting a 90th minutes equaliser for Hearts of Oak after Michael Osei had given Kotoko the lead on the hour mark.

During the second leg in Kumasi, Charles Taylor put the home side ahead on the 53 minutes, before Lawrence Adjah-Tetteh pulled parity inside the 80th minute to send the match into extra-time.

Hearts went on to clinch the trophy that was dubbed ‘the virgin cup’ via penalty shootouts.

The Phobians following their triumph made history by becoming the first club to win all three CAF Inter-Club Competitions – CAF Champions League (2000), CAF Confederations Cup(2004) and CAF Champions of Champions- Super Cup (200).

But I think both of them have chances. We are talking about the two great clubs in Ghana  and they have a name in Africa

“Kotoko can go through if they beef the team a bit. Hearts of Oak have beefed up their team with the inclusion of Samuel Incoom. Sulley Ali Muntari has really helped them. I think Hearts are okay but they need to add a little more.”

Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak have been given a deadline of July 31, 2022 by the Committee to fix all defects and comply with the recommendations on their match venues.
