Class Media’s CEO gifts Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare a car

Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare received a brand-new car on Wednesday from prominent businessman Alhaji Seidu Adongo, CEO of Class Media Group.

The donation was made during a brief ceremony held at the club’s commercial centre in Accra.

This generous gesture follows the circulation of a viral video in March, which showed Asare travelling in the front seat of an ‘ovam’ commercial vehicle shortly after making his debut for the Black Stars.

The footage sparked widespread criticism online, with many questioning the treatment and welfare of national team players.

“I thank all the supporters of Hearts of Oak and everyone. It is incredible for a lovely gesture to be extended to someone like me,” he said.

“I thank the whole nation and the president for this opportunity. I also thank my coach Ouattara and everyone who has helped me. I thank Ghanaians as well. God willing, we will be at the World Cup,” he added.
Asare Hearts been in imperious form for Hearts of Oak this season, keeping 15 clean sheets in 24 games.

“I’ll tell Asare to utilise the car well. He should bare in mind it was as a result of his abilities on the pitch that earned him this prize. I’ll urge him to perform at the highest level because Ghana is one of the most powerful football nations in the world,” Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouattara said.

Hearts of Oak are trailing league leaders GoldStars 10 points with four games to end the season.

  • Parts of Hearts of Oak’s ultra-modern secretariat reportedly up for rent

Hearts of Oak’s ultra-modern secretariat has reportedly been put up for rent.

The state-of-the-art facility in Adabraka was officially handed over to the club’s leadership in July 2024, as Executive Board Chairman Togbe Afede XIV affirmed that the facility would serve as the club’s new Commercial Centre.

Despite this, reports circulating indicate that the club has leased the ground floor for commercial purposes.

While the news has sparked curiosity, there is still uncertainty surrounding the move, as the club has yet to confirm whether the space is indeed available for lease or if it’s just a rumor.

In 2022, the Phobians took a significant step by demolishing their old building at Asylum Down, clearing the way for the construction of this new, modern facility.

During the club’s Annual General Meeting held in April 2024, Togbe Afede XIV revealed that the facility cost GH¢9 million.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, April 6, 2025, Hearts of Oak beat Medeama SC to move to fourth place on the Ghana Premier League standings, six points behind leaders Asante Kotoko, who are on 46 points after 25 games.

The team will face newly promoted side Vision FC in their next game on Friday, April 11, 2025.

Since his debut, Asare has been outstanding, keeping two clean sheets in his first two matches. He played a key role in Ghana’s 5-0 win over Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium and secured another shutout in the 3-0 victory against Madagascar in Morocco on Monday.

Reacting to Asare’s performances, Damba said, “Benjamin Asare has shown beyond doubt that he is hungry and eager to leave a mark in the Black Stars.”

He also commended the Black Stars squad for fully embracing the young goalkeeper, noting the trust and respect the team has shown him.

Damba highlighted that the entire team has supported Asare, and that trust has played a vital role in his confident performances. “The entire Black Stars team has accepted him for who he is. They trust and respect him,” he added.

GFA imposes fine on Hearts of Oak for safety violation

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Disciplinary Committee has fined Hearts of Oak for a security lapse during their match against Young Apostles.

The incident occurred on March 8 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium when some unaccredited fans entered a restricted area after Hearts of Oak secured a 2-0 win.

As a penalty, the club has been fined GHS 20,000, but GHS 10,000 of this amount has been suspended for the rest of the season, the GFA announced on Tuesday, March 25.

The association has also cautioned that any future violations will result in harsher punishments.

GFA charges Hearts of Oak head coach for skipping post-match press conference

Hearts of Oak head coach Aboubakar Ouattara has been charged by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Disciplinary Committee for skipping the mandatory post-match press conference after his team’s 1-0 loss to Dreams FC.

The defeat, which came on Saturday at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, ended Hearts’ seven-game unbeaten run, with Abdul Razak scoring the only goal early in the match.

After the game, Ouattara reportedly failed to meet with the media, an action the GFA viewed as deliberate and harmful to the sport’s image.

He has until Tuesday, March 18, to officially respond to the charge.

This comes just a week after Hearts of Oak was cited for violating safety regulations when the league resumed.

Hearts of Oak’s loss to Dreams FC was their first defeat in the 2025 Ghana Premier League season after an impressive run of five wins and two draws.

It was also their first league defeat since losing to rivals Asante Kotoko in the Super Clash back in December 2024.

The Phobians are currently third on the league table with 36 points, just two points behind leaders Kotoko. They will aim to return to winning ways when they take on Bechem United on Wednesday in a Matchday 25 clash at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park.

Maxwell Hanson is GFA’s hatchet man for dirty works, antics – Sammy Anim Addo

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Sammy Anim Addo has strongly criticized the GFA, accusing referee Maxwell Hanson of being involved in questionable practices after Accra Lions complained about his officiating in their 1-0 loss to Dreams FC.

Accra Lions expressed frustration, claiming they were unfairly treated and calling for changes in Ghanaian football. Dreams FC, however, defended Hanson, suggesting that poor officiating is something all clubs face at times.

Anim Addo, now President of Young Apostles, joined the criticism, calling Hanson a “hatchet man.” He shared on X how GFA officials had previously silenced him when he raised concerns about officiating.

“Maxwell Hanson is their man for ‘dirty works,’” Anim Addo wrote. “I sounded the alarm bells months ago but I was vehemently challenged with every attempt to ‘shush’ me by the leadership of Ghana Football… His disgraceful conduct undermines the league’s quality.”

Anim Addo further alleged that he had been threatened with relegation for speaking out, stating, “I have been threatened many times already that this GFA administration will ensure foul means to relegate my club, Young Apostles.

But, I want to sound caution to them, that, it is not the worst they can do to me and my continuous investment and commitment to Ghana football.”

The controversy surrounding Hanson’s decisions during the Dreams FC vs. Accra Lions match has sparked widespread reactions, with fans and stakeholders expressing dissatisfaction with his officiating.

Don’t advise me; I’m the coach, not you – Hearts of Oak coach clashes with journalists

Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouattara clashed with journalists following his side’s goalless draw against Dreams FC on Sunday.

The Phobians were hoping for a back-to-back win against the Still Believe lads in the Matchday 7 game at the Tuba AstroTurf.

However, the game ended goalless after 90 minutes of football.

Ouattara’s remarks followed a question on the team’s tactics, with the Ivorian manager emphasising his sole authority over the team’s decisions.

“I am the coach, and I’m the one to decide. I don’t need you to advise me on what I can or cannot do. The way you’re speaking suggests you have the right to dictate something,” he said.

“You’re a journalist. You ask your questions, and I give you my reply. Don’t expect me to give the response you want—I am the coach.”

“I am responsible for tomorrow’s match. If things don’t go well, I’m the one who signed the contract, not you. I don’t follow any commentary when making my decisions.”

The result means that Hearts of Oak remain unbeaten in their last five games, though they have managed to secure just two victories during this stretch.

Meanwhile, Dreams FC are still without a win after seven matches. Hearts of Oak will now turn their attention to their next fixture, hosting Bibiani GoldStars at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 27, for Matchday 8 of the league.

Hearts of Oak, Dreams FC, other teams to host matches at UG Stadium

Accra Hearts of Oak and three other Ghana Premier League teams have moved to the University of Ghana Stadium as their temporary home ground. Joining Hearts of Oak in this transition are Dreams FC, Legon Cities, and Accra Lions.

Previously, these teams, with the exception of Legon Cities, played their home matches at the Accra Sports Stadium.

However, due to the recent closure of the stadium for renovation, they have been forced to find an alternative venue.

The National Sports Authority officially announced on September 17, 2024, that both the Accra Sports Stadium and the Cape Coast Sports Stadium are now closed for renovation work.

The decision to renovate the stadiums follows widespread criticism from Ghanaians after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) declared all national venues in Ghana unsuitable for hosting category 3 matches.

CAF had previously approved only the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, but this approval was revoked after Angola raised concerns about the pitch quality during their 1-0 victory over the Black Stars in September 2024.

In response to CAF’s assessment, the National Sports Authority (NSA) has closed the Baba Yara Stadium for extensive upgrades, with plans to bring the facility up to the required standards ahead of Ghana’s next home fixture.

Ghanaian midfielder Enoch Morrison has expressed his regrets to Hearts of Oak for choosing to join Gor Mahia FC in the Kenyan Premier League instead.

Despite being closely linked with a transfer to the Ghanaian club last month and nearly finalising the deal, Morrison ultimately decided to sign with Gor Mahia FC.

In a recent interview, Morrison extended his apologies for the failed transfer to Hearts of Oak and requested their understanding and forgiveness.

“Hearts of Oak did not communicate with me directly, which made the deal more complicated.

I knew they were interested in me, but for one or two reasons, the process took longer than anticipated. If the delay hadn’t happened, I would have played for Hearts of Oak.

“During our multiple meetings, the Hearts coach expressed interest and explained how I would fit into his team. Because both of us were interested in the deal, I cannot hold Hearts responsible for its failure.

I can only say that because it was not intentional, they should accept my apologies in this regard,” Enoch Morrison said.

During the interview, the highly-regarded midfielder expressed his desire to potentially play for Hearts of Oak in the future.

Player contracts in Ghana are ‘abnormal’ – Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouattara fumes

Hearts of Oak head coach Aboubakar Ouattara has condemned the ‘abnormal’ nature of player contracts in the Ghana Premier League, particularly those that expire just before a new season begins.

During a media briefing on Thursday, July 25, Ouattara expressed frustration over the non-professional nature of these contracts, highlighting how they often lead to players leaving clubs at critical times.

“It’s only in Ghana that I see a player’s contract end in September or December,” Ouattara remarked.

“It’s not normal for a contract to end just a week before the league starts. It’s not professional.”

Ouattara’s remarks stem from recent problems where players have left Ghanaian clubs due to poorly timed contract expirations, creating difficulties for teams during critical points in the season.

The Hearts of Oak coach is determined to strengthen his squad following a tough 2023/24 season, where the team narrowly escaped relegation with a vital comeback win against Bechem United on the final day.

“It is good for brand building which will enhance our commercial value and make it more attractive for sponsors. In the end, you cannot divorce the commercial bit from the technical bit. They are inseparable. They are twins and work together.”

“Because without the resources you can’t support the technical…We cannot continue to pay at least $1,000 to $1,500 and compete with people who take $40,000. So, we have to enhance our commercial aspect,” he said.

The new commercial center features a conference room and offices for the managing director and supporting administrators. It also includes spaces designed for hosting the club’s commercial activities.

This Head Office/Commercial Centre is part of a four-step infrastructure project aimed at modernizing the club’s operations.

Hearts’ Aboubakar Ouattara labels Kotoko mass dismissal as waste of money

Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouattara has emphasized that he views it as inefficient and costly to terminate players’ contracts and recruit replacements.

In contrast to rivals Asante Kotoko, who released 21 players after the conclusion of the 2023/24 season, Ouattara stated that Hearts of Oak will not follow suit.

Despite their lower league standings compared to Asante Kotoko, the coach believes it wouldn’t be wise to let go of players who underperformed in the previous season.

In an interview with SportsObama TV, the coach said, “We are friends, and their sacking of players is not my problem. We are Hearts of Oak; I have my agenda and my policies.”

“Who is losing? You are sacking 100 and bringing in 200; what are the results?” he asked.

“When I look at the results, we are struggling, and every time we are doing the same thing. Why haven’t we changed? If you are building a house and you demolish it and start all over again, aren’t you wasting money?” the Ivorian questioned.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak have parted ways with one of their key players, Salifu Ibrahim.

  • Kotoko coach so happy to beat Hearts of Oak back-to-back; calls it a big achievement

Asante Kotoko’s head coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum, expressed his delight after securing consecutive victories against Hearts of Oak in the Ghana Premier League.

The Porcupine Warriors added to the Phobians’ woes with a commanding performance at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

Ugandan striker Steven Desse Mukwala netted a goal in each half, propelling the Porcupine Warriors to victory and granting them bragging rights.

Reflecting on the match, Prosper Narteh Ogum emphasized that securing back-to-back wins over Hearts of Oak serves as motivation for his team to finish the season strongly.

“Beating Hearts of Oak back-to-back is not an easy job, so I’m happy. I think it’s an honour for this group of players; it’s been a while since this happened.

I’m not very sure of when this actually happened, but it’s been a while, so we are all happy, and you could see that when the final whistle was blown.”

Following the victory, coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum’s team has ascended to 9th place in the league standings, while Hearts of Oak has slipped to 14th.

Asante Kotoko’s upcoming match is against Accra Great Olympics at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday, June 2, 2024.

  • Charles Taylor calls for dissolution, relegation of Hearts of Oak

Charles Taylor calls for dissolution, relegation of Hearts of Oak

Former Hearts of Oak forward Charles Taylor expressed his desire for the club to face relegation from the Ghana Premier League.

Taylor, a key member of Hearts of Oak’s treble-winning team in 2000, believes that relegation would provide closure for fans amidst a challenging season.

Additionally, Taylor proposed the dissolution of the club’s board, citing a perceived loss of the team’s iconic “Never say die” spirit.

“I want Hearts of Oak to go to relegation. They should dissolve the Hearts of Oak board because there’s no ‘Never Say Die’ spirit in the team again,” he said on Angel TV.

“If necessary Hearts of Oak should go to relegation because their supporters are going through a lot,” he added.

Hearts of Oak currently sit in 14th place on the table, holding onto a slim two-point margin above the relegation zone.

This precarious position follows a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Asante Kotoko on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

Their recent form has been dismal, with the team suffering four losses and managing just one victory in their last five matches.

With only three games remaining in the season, the Phobians face a crucial opportunity to salvage what has been a disappointing campaign.

Hearts of Oak sacked me without reason – Obeng Jnr ‘cries’

Former Hearts of Oak player Kwadwo Obeng Junior has shared the disappointing treatment he experienced at Hearts despite showing loyalty.

The striker narrated that, out of respect and love for the Phobians, he turned down offers from foreign clubs to focus on the 24-time Ghana Premier League champions.

Speaking with Vision FM, he revealed that the club paid him back distastefully by offloading him without notice and for no substantial reason.

“I had offers from foreign clubs but because I respect Hearts, I told them they shouldn’t engage them (interested clubs). But unexpectedly, without committing an offence, I got sidelined. If I was the problem, I’d understand and leave. Even with that, those they recruited have bigger problems than me.”

Despite being pained, he said he has accepted the exit in good faith because he felt fulfilled after winning six titles with the club.

“I have accepted it because I’ve paid my dues to the club. After going 11 years without a trophy, I won six trophies with them. So I have paid my dues.”

The former Nea Salamina player urged Hearts of Oak’s board to handle player exits better to avoid players feeling bitter about the club.

“My advice to the board is that if they want to offload a player, they should do it properly so the player can leave in peace. In that way, the remaining squad will get lucky.”

“I was the only one who had a problem. Galdson Awako and the like took their issues with the club to court. We all started the season but got offloaded in the second round, Now look at what is happening to them. We are quietly watching, but we don’t want their downfall,” he added.

Kwadwo Obeng Junior initially joined Hearts of Oak in 2018 on loan before securing a permanent contract.

Over six years with the club, he amassed an impressive collection of six titles, which included the Ghana Premier League, Super Cup, two FA Cups, and two President’s Cups.

Hearts of Oak coach says he is clueless as to why they lost to Accra Lions

Hearts of Oak’s Assistant Coach, Abdul Rahim Bashiru, has voiced his surprise following his team’s unforeseen defeat to Accra Lions on Wednesday.

Despite a promising start and several opportunities in the first half, the Phobians couldn’t convert their chances, ultimately conceding a goal to Accra Lions in the 56th minute scored by Ibrahim Issa.

“That’s football. We started so well. We were even supposed to finish the game in the first half. We had some decent chances but we couldn’t take them,” Rahim Bashiru lamented post-match.

“In the second half, we continued before they scored so to me, I can’t tell you the reason why. I don’t know. Whether we lost focus or what. We kept trying but they defended so well. Their goalkeeper did very well so we have to congratulate them,” he added.

The recent defeat has seen Hearts of Oak drop to 12th place in the league standings with 35 points, just four points above the relegation zone.

Conversely, Accra Lions have ascended to third position, strengthening their position in the league.

Hearts of Oak have now suffered five defeats in their last six matches, with their lone victory in that period coming against Karela United.

Given their ongoing struggles, the Phobians may face the prospect of missing out on a top-four finish for the third consecutive year, following their Ghana Premier League triumph in the 2020/21 season.

Their upcoming fixture is against Berekum Chelsea at Golden City Park on Saturday, May 4, 2024.

Hayford even brought a seat onto the pitch to protest against perceived poor officiating. This behavior has led to the misconduct charge against him.

Additionally, seven Bechem United officials are set to face the Committee on Thursday over allegations of attacking match officials, with the club also facing charges.

Veteran coach Bashir Hayford has until Monday, May 6, to respond to the charge, which violates Section 34(6)(d) of the GFA Premier League Regulations 2019.

This is what killed my passion for football – Ex- Hearts player Joe Louis shares story

Former player for Hearts of Oak, Joe Louis, revealed that his passion for anything related to football waned after retirement, attributing it to a troubling experience he encountered during his time with the club.

In an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV, Louis recounted the challenges he faced in his final years at Hearts, particularly concerning unpaid bonuses. Frustrated by the situation, he made the difficult decision to forgo an entire year’s salary and depart from the club.

Louis explained that upon informing the club of his decision, the management refused to accept his resignation and instead insisted that he fulfill the remaining year of his contract. This, he asserted, significantly dampened his enthusiasm for the sport.

“I first informed Alhaji Hearts about my decision because he was very nice to me during my time. He told me to take it easy and that they would sort things out. Then I went to Harry Zakour (former Heart of Oak CEO) and told him ‘I’m giving up my one-year salary, I want to leave’ but he also said no. It was from that point I lost my passion for football,” he said.

Joe Louis asserted that the struggles local players and coaches go through before getting money due to them made football unpleasant to him.

He said he was cheated by clubs, stating that despite his dedication during his peak years, he did not receive what he was entitled to.

“To be honest, I don’t have the urge to become a coach. While I was playing football, I saw a lot of things. I played football wholeheartedly but didn’t get the incentives I deserved. I feel our leaders didn’t look out for us well enough. When I look back, there was a lot of cheating.”

“And it wasn’t only me, about 98% of Ghanaian players. And it exists among all the teams in Ghana. Signing on fees, bonuses, and a lot of things are always an issue. It gets to a point where you just have to let go.”

“I loved football. Aside from playing, I really liked football. I used to watch second-division and first-division games. But because of what I went through, after I retired, I didn’t have the urge to become a coach or do anything football-related.”

He added that the situation has not improved and that has hindered him from becoming a coach or taking a football-related career patch after retirement.

“Nothing has changed. They will employ you as a coach but you wan’t your salary and it becomes a problem. You will have to fight for it. I love football but I don’t have the urge to do anything football-related, to be honest.

Following his retirement, Joe Louis worked with his brothers to run an automobile dealing company for a while, but he stopped along the line.

Our hearts bleed! – Frustrated Hearts of Oak fans stage protests over team’s lackluster

A group of disgruntled Accra Hearts of Oak fans expressed their frustration through a protest at the Dr Kwame Kyei Sports Complex during the team’s match against Nations FC in the Ghana Premier League on Saturday, December 16, 2023.

The supporters, adorned with red headbands and holding placards, used the match as an opportunity to voice their discontent over the team’s lacklustre performance, having failed to secure a victory in their last five matches.

The sentiments were noticeable as the placards bore messages such as “We need a competent local coach,” “We need strikers,” and “Hearts is bleeding,” among other expressions of frustration.

The top brass of the Hearts of Oak board found themselves at the centre of blame, with calls for their dismissal gaining momentum during the protest.

The fans demanded accountability, expressing sentiments such as “We don’t need Nyaho,” “Hearts keep sinking under Togbe Afede,” and “Some board members are interfering with the coach’s job.”

Despite the pressure exerted by the demonstration, Hearts of Oak failed to secure a victory against Nations FC, conceding a late goal that resulted in a 1-1 draw.

The protest by the Hearts of Oak fans follows their team’s recent defeat at home in the Ghana Premier League against arch-rivals Asante Kotoko.

The difficulties prompted the club to part ways with their Dutch coach, Martin Koopman, in the wake of the team’s poor run.

“Has he swallowed a whale?” — Netizens blast Hearts’ goalkeeper’s over weight after Kotoko loss

Hearts of Oak endured a disheartening defeat against their arch-rivals Kumasi Asante Kotoko in their recent match, with goalkeeper Richmond Ayi facing criticism for his performance.

However, the spotlight expanded beyond Ayi, encompassing his teammate and backup goalkeeper, Richard Atta, who also faced scrutiny.

Following the game, a video surfaced showing Atta consoling a tearful Ayi. Instead of receiving sympathy, Atta became the subject of attention, with many Ghanaians focusing on his appearance.

Criticism centred on his visible belly and full cheeks, questioning his fitness level and suitability for a top-level club.

On social media, particularly on Platform X, numerous individuals shared their opinions, posting harsh comments about Atta’s physique. This incident underscores the intense pressure athletes endure to maintain a specific image, both on and off the field.

Amidst the negative remarks, it’s crucial to acknowledge that physical fitness manifests in diverse forms and body types.

While Atta may not conform to the stereotypical lean, muscular build associated with professional athletes, he undeniably possesses the skills and capabilities required to perform at a high level.

South Africa’s Pitso Mosimane among list of coaches being considered by Hearts – Odotei Sowah

Hearts of Oak board member, Vincent Odotei Sowah, has revealed that the club is aiming to secure the services of a coach in the mold of legendary South African manager, Pitso Mosimane.

Following the dismissal of their coach, Martin Koopman, Hearts of Oak has been in search of a new trainer.

Although Pitso Mosimane has been identified as their target, the club acknowledges that their biggest challenge lies in their financial capacity to afford such a high-profile coach.

Odotei Sowah expressed the club’s desire to bring in a coach like Pitso Mosimane, but financial considerations are crucial. He urged fans to be patient, as the club works towards a stage where it can attract world-class coaches.

Speaking on Asempa FM, the former MP said, “Those of us in charge of Hearts of Oak now, we want to bring someone like Pitso Mosimane. Can we afford him? Do you know how much he was being paid at Al Ahly?”

“The point I am trying to make is that, when appointing a coach, a lot of considerations come into play. If the fans are patient with us a bit, we believe we will get to a stage where we can attract world-class coaches.”

Hearts of Oak has undergone significant coaching changes over the last three years, having appointed a total of 8 coaches during this period. The current interim coach, Abdul Rahim Bashiru, is set to lead the team in their upcoming match against Asante Kotoko in the Ghana Premier League.

Ex- Hearts of Oak coach, Martin Koopman accuses club Board of sabotage in player selection

Former Hearts of Oak coach, Martin Koopman, has levied serious allegations against the club’s Board of Directors regarding player selection during his tenure.

The Dutch coach and the club mutually agreed to part ways following a string of unsatisfactory results.

Koopman, who had initially signed a two-year deal with the club, disclosed in an interview that the Board of Directors instructed him not to utilise seven players at the beginning of the ongoing 2023–24 Ghana Premier League season.

He asserted that the club’s leadership had expressed a lack of trust in these players.

These revelations shed light on internal challenges within the club and raise questions about the dynamics between the coaching staff and the Board of Directors at Hearts of Oak during Koopman’s tenure.

“There are seven players they told me not to use in the competition. It was a day before our opening game,” Koopman told GhanaSportsPage.com.

“They named three players, but they later changed it to seven players (Annan, Korsah, Esso, Albert Eonde, Salifu, Seidu, and Attah).

They told me not to use them because they don’t believe them and they cannot help me in the competition,” he added.

Koopman managed to secure only two victories and a total of six goals in 10 Ghana Premier League matches during his tenure.

Hearts of Oak, currently without a new head coach, suffered an exit from the MTN FA Cup after being defeated by division-one side Nania FC.

The team is now in search of a suitable candidate to fill the coaching role.

Meanwhile, the Phobians are gearing up for their upcoming match on matchday 13 against Aduana FC at the Nana Agyemang Badu stadium on Sunday.

This match poses a significant challenge for the team, and their performance will be closely watched as they aim to recover from recent setbacks.

Baba Yara now home grounds for Hearts of Oak

Ghana Premier League powerhouse Hearts of Oak has been compelled to move its home games to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium due to the closure of the Accra Sports Stadium.

This relocation impacts the eagerly anticipated Super Clash against Asante Kotoko SC, originally scheduled for Accra on Sunday, December 10, which will now be held in Kumasi.

The closure of the Accra Sports Stadium is attributed to its rental for Christmas concerts and other events.

The Ghana Football Association officially confirmed this decision by Hearts last Friday.

Currently occupying the 7th position on the league table with 16 points, Hearts recently parted ways with coach Martinus Koopman. Assistant Abdul Rahim Bashiru is temporarily in charge until a permanent appointment is made.

The Phobians are gearing up for a challenging fixture against league leaders Aduana Stars at Nana Agyemang Badu Park in Dormaa Ahenkro.

In a midweek setback, Hearts faced an embarrassing elimination from the FA Cup, losing on penalties to lower-tier Nania FC.

Hearts of Oak, 2 others in search of new venues for home games over closure of Accra Sports Stadium

National Sports Authority (NSA) has officially communicated that the Accra Sports Stadium will be unavailable for sporting activities throughout the month of December.

In a press statement issued and signed by the director-general, Professor Peter Twumasi, Ghanaian clubs accustomed to utilizing the stadium for their league matches are advised to seek alternative venues for their December games.

“The National Sports Authority wishes to inform you about the unavailability of the Accra Sports Stadium for sporting purposes.

By this letter, all the clubs that use the Accra Sports Stadium are entreated to use their alternative venues to honour their league matches in December,” the statement dated October 20, 2023, reads.

In a letter dated October 20, 2023, the National Sports Authority (NSA) has requested all clubs accustomed to using the Accra Sports Stadium to seek alternative venues for their league matches in December. The statement emphasises the need for clubs to honour their league commitments at these alternative locations.

The decision to temporarily close the Accra Sports Stadium in December is attributed to the hosting of two major concerts, namely the Freedom Concert and the Bhim Concert.

These events, featuring headlining performances by dancehall artists Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, are slated to take place at the stadium during that period.

Traditionally serving as the home grounds for the Ghana Premier League teams Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics, both clubs will now shift to the alternative venues previously submitted to the Ghana Football Association at the commencement of the current campaign.

  • Ghana football in general has a problem, so don’t blame me for Hearts of Oak’s lack of goals – Martin Koopman

Ghana football in general has a problem, so don’t blame me for Hearts of Oak’s lack of goals – Martin Koopman

Head coach of Hearts of Oak, Martin Koopman, has firmly asserted that he should not be held accountable for his team’s goal-scoring issues, as he believes it is a nationwide concern.

In the sixth matchday fixture, the Phobians played to a goalless draw against FC Samartex 1996 at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday.

Hearts of Oak have managed to score just one goal in the ongoing 2023/24 Ghana Premier League, with Ramos Kashala credited for that solitary goal against Nsoatreman FC during the second matchday.

In a post-game statement, the Dutch coach emphasised that the entire country is grappling with the challenge in finding the back of the net.

He went on to state that he, personally, is not the root of the problem within the club. Koopman assured that they would persist in their efforts to secure the necessary victories and results.

“Look, there is a deep problem in Ghanaian football,” he told StarTimes.

“The problem is also with the national team. The wingers and the strikers cannot score goals, as I keep saying, and it is not only with us but it is happening in the national team and other clubs.

“We will do everything to win games and they must come and look at how we work with the boys.

“I think I am not the problem and also not the players because they gave everything but we need experience and then goals then we can move on from the problem,” he added.

Hearts of Oak will be hosted by the Bibiani Gold Stars in the matchday seven games at DUN’s Park next weekend.

FIFA bans Hearts of Oak after failure to pay ex coach

FIFA has taken punitive measures against Hearts of Oak, instituting a transfer embargo due to the club’s failure to settle an outstanding debt of $14,002 owed to their former coach, Slavko Matic.

The global soccer governing body has also directed the Ghana Football Association to enforce this decision at the national level.

The dispute originates from events in March 2023, when Serbian coach Slavko Matic was unexpectedly terminated from his position. His dismissal occurred amid a tumultuous situation, with angry fans confronting him during a training session.

In response, Matic filed a formal complaint with the Ghana Police, expressing concerns for his safety.

Given the escalating tension, Hearts of Oak expressed their inability to guarantee the coach’s security.

Following these developments, Matic escalated the matter to FIFA, which reached a verdict in July of the same year.

FIFA ruled in favour of Matic, instructing Hearts of Oak to compensate their former coach with the sum of $14,002 for the contract breach.

However, Hearts of Oak has yet to adhere to FIFA’s directive, prompting the international organisation to impose the transfer ban.

This ban, which is already in effect, prohibits the club from registering new players until they fulfil their financial obligations to Matic.

Hearts of Oak pledges to beat Nsoatreman FC to make fans happy

Communications Director of Hearts of Oak, Kwame Opare Addo, has offered assurance to the supporters that their team is determined to secure a victory against Nsoatreman FC.

The Phobians endured an unexpected setback with a 1-0 defeat against Real Tamale United (RTU) in their inaugural match of the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season at the Aliu Mahama Stadium.

However, Hearts of Oak is set to return to the Accra Sports Stadium for their second match of the season against Nsoatreman. Looking ahead to the upcoming clash, Opare Addo reaffirmed the team’s commitment to clinching their first win of the season and bringing joy to their fans.

“On Sunday’s game, we know Nsoatreman FC will not come easy but we will do the talking on the pitch and make the Hearts of Oak family happy,” he told Accra-based Original FM.

Kick-off for the game has been scheduled at 15:00GMT.

  • Hearts do better under local coaches than foreign ones -Ex-Hearts of Oak keeper

Hearts do better under local coaches than foreign ones -Ex-Hearts of Oak keeper

Former goalkeeper for Hearts of Oak, Ebenezer Armah Dida, has expressed his belief that the choice to bring in foreign coaches doesn’t consistently yield the expected outcomes.

Dida pointed out that not even Ernst Middendrop, whom he regards as the most accomplished expatriate coach at the club, managed to secure the Ghana Premier League title during his tenure.

Dida is concerned that history might repeat itself with the recent appointment of Dutchman Martin Koopman as the club’s head coach.

He said: “I have always said this. Foreign coaches do not help us. When I check our history, the only foreign coach who helped us was Middendrop. That was in my time but I can’t say the same for others. He (Middendrop) even failed to win the league,” Dida said.

“When Boadu (coach Samuel Boadu) came, he won two trophies with Hearts. He is a Ghanaian. So, check the history. That’s what I know.”

Hearts of Oak lost their opening game against RTU and will be hoping to bounce back when they host Nsoatreman this weekend.

Hearts beat Dolphins FC in friendly

Ghana Premier League club Hearts of Oak secured a resounding 4-0 victory against lower-tier team Dolphins FC in a pre-season friendly held at the Pobiman Football Academy on Wednesday afternoon.

The Phobians’ dominance was evident as Seidu Suraj found the net twice, first at the 12-minute mark and then again at the 20th minute, propelling them into a comfortable lead.

Cameroonian import Elbert Eonde further extended Hearts of Oak’s advantage, making it 3-0 with a goal just one minute before the close of the first half.

Heading into halftime with a solid 3-0 lead, the 2000 CAF Champions League winners maintained control of the match.

The second half saw no let-up from Hearts of Oak as they added a fourth goal. Albert Eonde, who had already scored once, netted his second of the afternoon in the 50th minute.

A chance to further increase their lead came when former Real Tamale United loanee Issah Kukah had an opportunity to score from the penalty spot. However, his attempt went wide in the 79th minute, leaving the scoreline at 4-0.

No additional goals were recorded, securing a convincing win for Hearts of Oak. This victory marks their third consecutive success in pre-season friendlies, following previous wins against Miracle Land FC (11-1), Lazio Spot (4-1), and Attram De Visser (6-1), all played at the Pobiman Football Academy.

Ghanaians passion for GPL is still vibrant, they haven’t lost interest – Sports minister

During a thought leadership event organized by Joy Sports, Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, enthusiastically asserted that Ghanaian football fans have not lost their interest in the Ghana Premier League.

Despite the declining attendance numbers in recent seasons, Ussif passionately emphasized that this does not indicate a decrease in the nation’s love for the sport.

To support his claim, Ussif highlighted the significant turnouts witnessed during matches between Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics just two years ago, showcasing the fervor and passion for football among Ghanaians, which he believes remain as vibrant as ever.

“I refuse to believe that Ghanaians have suddenly lost interest in football. No, the passion is still alive and vibrant.

“We must, therefore, delve deeper into the underlying factors responsible for this decline and take decisive actions to revive our beloved league,” declared Ussif.

“Two years ago, the fierce rivalry between Hearts of Oak and Great Olympics drew an overwhelming crowd. Yet, we find ourselves grappling with a disheartening decline in attendance at recent fixtures.”

  • Kotoko fans descend on Samuel Inkoom for ‘lies’in failed Kotoko move attempt

Kotoko fans descend on Samuel Inkoom for ‘lies’in failed Kotoko move attempt

Former Ghana right-back, Samuel Inkoom, is facing scrutiny over his credibility following conflicting statements about his unsuccessful return to Asante Kotoko in 2022.

In April 2022, Inkoom surprised many by joining Accra Hearts of Oak, despite strong links suggesting a potential move to Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

In an interview soon after the transfer, Inkoom claimed that his move to Kotoko was hindered by the former Asante Kotoko CEO, Nana Yaw Amponsah.

“Don’t blame me for my proposed Hearts move, Kotoko CEO feels big to call me. So Kotoko fans should blame their CEO and not me,” Inkoom was reported to have told Onua Sports after training.

In a recent interview with Citi TV, Samuel Inkoom revealed that it was then Asante Kotoko coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum who blocked his move to the club.

This statement contradicted his earlier claim where he had blamed the former Asante Kotoko CEO, Nana Yaw Amponsah, for the failed transfer.

“I wanted to play for Kotoko…the CEO, Nana Yaw Amponsah, called me and invited me to the club. I was willing to play for free, but there was a misunderstanding between the coach and the CEO.”He stated.

This new claim by Samuel Inkoom has generated conversations on social media as Asante Kotoko fans are having a go at him for making false allegations against Nana Yaw Amponsah.

According to them, Samuel Inkoom courted unnecessary attacks for Nana Yaw Amponsah with his earlier claim that he stood between him and a move to Asante Kotoko.

In the 2022/2023 season, Samuel Inkoom featured for Accra Hearts of Oak who finished 12th with 46 points.
