Meet Ghanaian businessman, Jesse Ghansah, who accumulated a sum of $17m for his enterprise

A Ghanaian serial entrepreneur with a history of profitable businesses, Jesse Ghansah, has emerged as a key disruptor in the fintech sector by proposing creative ideas that are revolutionizing the continent’s financial sector.

Ghansah’s entrepreneurial journey began in 2014 when he co-founded three startups, which unfortunately discontinued after two years.

However, in 2016, he gained global recognition for his media company, OMG Digital, which was accepted into the prestigious Y Combinator startup accelerator program. OMG Digital, which owned OMGVoice and Bitnode, became known as the “BuzzFeed of Africa.”

Jesse Ghansah launched Float in 2020 to address African SMEs’ financing and cashflow issues.

After departing from OMG Digital, Ghansah shifted his focus to fintech, recognizing that financing cash flow problems presented a substantial hurdle for African small and medium-sized enterprises.

His unwavering commitment to solving these cash flow issues drove him to co-found Float (previously known as Swipe), a San Francisco-based fintech startup that provides flexible credit lines to cover cash flow gaps for SMEs in Africa, in January 2020.

Float’s innovative solutions have transformed the way businesses in various industries, including fintech, retail, manufacturing, e-commerce, media, and health, operate.

With a 26-fold increase in payment transactions, the startup has enabled hundreds of businesses to access more than $10 million in credit spending and cash advances.

With $17 million in funding secured from investors, Float is set for expansion in the fintech space

In recent times, Float has garnered the attention of institutional investors, leading to a successful seed funding round of $17 million in 2022.

The funding included a $7-million equity investment and a $10-million debt financing, with Cauris Finance leading the debt financing and JAM Fund and Tiger Global co-leading the equity financing.

Thus far, the funding round’s proceeds have been directed towards bolstering its cash management systems and launching new credit solutions tailored to specific industries.

Additionally, the company is utilizing the funds to expand its operations in Ghana and Nigeria, as well as introduce its services in Kenya and South Africa.

Ghansah’s entrepreneurial journey is a remarkable illustration of perseverance and determination in the face of adversity. Despite experiencing setbacks with three previous startups, he persisted and successfully established a thriving media company.

By bridging the financing gap for SMEs and supplying much-needed liquidity to millions of businesses across the continent, Ghansah and his team are paving the way for a more robust and sustainable African economy.

With his focus now on Float’s expansion plans, he is poised to make a significant impact on Africa’s financial technology industry.

  • Cameroon: Entrepreneur recycles charcoal into green gas

Tonnes of coal waste are thrown away each year in Douala, the economic capital of Cameroon.

The waste can pollute both the air and water supplies and is also a fire hazard.

Eric Tankeu came up with a environmentally-friendly solution – recycling the charcoal and turning it into a usable “green gas”.

Tankeu is no stranger to going green – for years he worked on different projects to help protect the environment.

He says the “gas” project has helped to repurpose many hectares of forest by reusing the discarded charcoal waste.

Tankeu explains that the “gas” is a synthetic gas, produced from carbon-containing materials. Not only charcoal waste, but also biomass, plastics, household waste or similar materials.

The end product is bottled in a cylinder that can be used for a household stove.

Tankeu explains that his “gas” stove offers a safer and more sustainable way of cooking food or heating water.

A large part of Cameroon’s population has no access to electricity and domestic gas is expensive or even unavailable in some areas.

As a result, many Cameroonians rely on firewood and coal for cooking and covering basic needs.

According to Global Forest Watch (GFW), Cameroon’s forests are feeling the pressure.

The platform provides data and tools for monitoring forests online.

It says Cameroon lost 1.7 million hectares (4.2 million acres) of tree cover between 2002 and 2021, more than 5% of its total.

The main causes were harvesting wood for fuel, logging, and conversion of forests into agricultural land, GFW reported.

  • Prioritise youth empowerment; stop giving them money for votes – African leaders told

Ghanaian politician, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Samuel Aryeequaye has told African leaders to make youth empowerment their focus instead of giving them ‘peanuts’ for votes.

Speaking at this year’s edition of the Africa Humanitarian Actions Conference which took place in Abuja, Nigeria over the weekend, the Best Diplomat United Nation Simulation’s representative to Ghana said, the only way to see Africa get better is by having leaders who pay more attention to youth empowerment.

Research has shown that among all the continents on the globe, Africa has majority of its population being youth — more than 60% of its population is under the age of 30 — and many of them are desperate and have no or little hope.

According to him, most African leaders instead of educating the youth and creating jobs for them to be independent, rather hoard monies and share to electorates which he believes is a bad practice.

The central regional chairman of the Liberal Party of Ghana and 2020 parliamentary candidate for Agona East mentioned that, there is a higher rate of unemployment in Africa because majority of African Leaders hardly empower the youth, create enabling environment for them to create jobs for themselves and others.

According to him, as a politician and philanthropist, one of his major priorities is to see the African youth get better and by so doing, while other politicians are sharing money for votes, he chooses to give young people in his constituency vocational training — a  great way of reducing the ‘galloping’ rate of unemployment.

He cited in his speech at the said conference that, in the constituency where he lost an election, he organized a skills training session for over two thousand young people of which majority of them are making a living out it.

Revealing one of his happiest moments in life, he gave an account on how some of the young people he trained walked up to him to say thank you and how the training is contributing to the betterment of their lives.

Samuel Aryeequaye is the brain behind ‘Saye Foundation’ — an Advocacy for change and growth.
