Revealed: Duncan-Williams opens up on his exit from National Cathedral Board

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, General Overseer of Action Chapel International, has publicly explained his decision to resign from the National Cathedral of Ghana’s Board of Trustees.

In a recent statement shared by GNA on August 27, 2024, Duncan-Williams revealed that his departure was motivated by a belief that his presence was no longer making an impact.

“I left the National Cathedral’s Board because I felt I couldn’t make a difference there,” the founder of Action Chapel International said.

Duncan-Williams and Rev Eastwood Anaba of Eastwood Anaba Ministries both stepped down from the Board in October 2023.

Their resignation was formally communicated to President Akufo-Addo, citing increasing concerns over the project’s transparency and accountability as their reasons for leaving.

“Despite our prayers, best hopes and wishes, unfortunately, a needed audit to help restore public confidence and trust in this consequential project has not been enacted to the best of our knowledge. Since January 2023, we have awaited news, to no avail, regarding the findings of the audit. We, therefore, regret that as a matter of conscience and faith, we hereby submit to you our resignation from the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral,” the statement said.

They clarified that their resignation should not be seen as a challenge to the National Cathedral’s vision or goals.

Instead, they emphasized that they believe their departure serves to advance the project with a focus on integrity, efficiency, and quality, while also maintaining and strengthening public trust and support.

  • You’re fighting for God; Why abandon the National Cathedral? Duncan Williams, Eastwood Anaba asked

You’re fighting for God; Why abandon the National Cathedral? Duncan Williams, Eastwood Anaba asked

Member of the National Democratic Party (NPP)’s communications team, Lawrence Kwesi Antwi, has conveyed his dissatisfaction with the resignation of Eastwood Anaba and Duncan Williams from the National Cathedral Board.

In his view, these two individuals are exceptional spiritual leaders who should have remained steadfast in overseeing the operations of the National Cathedral at every stage.

Consequently, choosing to resign because of gov’t failure to appoint an independent accounting firm to conduct a comprehensive audit is equivalent to forsaking the divine mission.

“If you want to probe into accountability and you haven’t been able to achieve that purpose, why do you abandon it. You are fighting for God, ” Mr Lawrence Kwesi Antwi told the media.

Founder and General Overseer of United Denominations of Action Chapel Churches Worldwide, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, and President of Eastwood Anaba Ministries, Rev. Eastwood Anaba, tendered their resignations from the Board of Trustees overseeing the construction of the National Cathedral.

In a collaborative statement issued by Archbishop Duncan-Williams and Rev. Anaba, they have expounded that their decision to resign is a result of the government’s failure to engage an independent auditing firm for a comprehensive examination of all public funds directed towards the National Cathedral project.

Back on January 23, this year, the two religious leaders had urged for the immediate suspension of the project, along with the initiation of a financial audit.

At that time, they underscored that their call was prompted by the numerous controversies associated with the venture.

They believed that the suspension would have created an avenue for transparency and accountability to be delivered to the Ghanaian populace.

In a memorandum submitted to the Board of Trustees, they had requested an impartial audit of the project’s financial outlays.

In their most recent joint statement, the clergy members assert that their request has received limited attention, prompting them to take the decision to step down from the project’s board.

“We, therefore, regret that as a matter of conscience and faith, we hereby submit to you our resignation from the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral. We honourably assure you, as we assured the Board of Trustees in January 2023 with the submission of our Resolution, that our action in no way impugns the vision or intent of The National Cathedral, but rather ensures that it is advanced and built on a foundation of integrity, efficiency and quality while garnering and maintaining public trust and support,” a part of their statement read.

We want National Cathedral to be built on ‘integrity, efficiency and quality’ – Duncan-Williams, Eastwood Anaba to govt

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, the Founder and General Overseer of the United Denominations of Action Chapel Churches Worldwide, and Rev. Eastwood Anaba, President of Eastwood Anaba Ministries, have noted that the current state of the National Cathedral project leaves much to be desired with regards to quality and integrity.

The clergymen communicated this sentiment in their joint letter communicating their resignation from the Board of Trustees on October 12, 2023.

They announced the government’s failure to engage an independent accounting firm to conduct a thorough audit of all public funds contributed to the National Cathedral project.

In January 2023, as Trustees of the Board of Trustees, they submitted a draft Resolution to the said Board resolving that current activities, advancing the construction of Ghana’s National Cathedral, be deferred until the findings of an audit. This deferment included a cessation of activities by the Board of Trustees.

“In the spirit and cause of transparency and accountability to the Ghanaian people, the current Board of Trustees of The National Cathedral shall appoint an independent accounting firm to audit all public funds contributed to The National Cathedral. This appointment of an auditor shall take place before the deferment of the activities of the Board of Trustees,” the Resolution stated.

However, according to the clergymen, the Board failed to act on its request.

Government’s inaction, they said, would affect their conscience and faith should they remain adamant and support such an initiative.

It is their aim that the project be “built on a foundation of integrity, efficiency and quality while gamering and maintaining public trust and support.”

This statement indicates that the project currently lacks these virtues.

Nyaho Tamakloe charges Duncan Williams, Otabil, others to speak truth to power

A well-known figure in Ghana’s political arena and a prominent member of the Ghana Today Coalition, Dr. Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe, delivered an impassioned press conference on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Headquarters.

During the conference, he emphasized the need for citizens to courageously speak truth to those in authority.

He also raised questions about the silence of influential individuals and organizations in the country. Dr. Tamakloe expressed his worries about the current condition of Ghana and the apparent absence of those who had previously been known for speaking truth to those in power.

“Individuals who constantly spoke truth to power some years ago to emerge from the self imposed excise to speak to the government we have now. Where are the Otabil’s, Duncan Williams, Rev. Martey and, Dag-Heward Mills and the many civil society organizations and critical journalists,” he bemoaned.

He emphasized the necessity for these powerful voices to speak out and confront the issues Ghana is currently facing.

“We need to speak truth to power to help maintain the peace we have in this country. Anything to go by the tenets of our wavering democratic principles would turn this country upside down,” Dr. Tamakloe emphasized.

Dr. Tamakloe underscored the significance of holding government appointees accountable to the electorate. He emphasized the role of the Electoral Commission of Ghana in supervising public elections and referenda since its establishment in 1992.

Nevertheless, he voiced apprehensions about the recent performance of the Electoral Commission, which has raised doubts regarding the integrity of Ghana’s electoral procedures.

  • Duncan Williams and the churches, TUC, CSOs must form a party for 2024 elections – Martin Kpebu

Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has called upon religious organizations, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to unite and collaborate in order to field a presidential candidate capable of breaking the long-standing duopoly in the political arena.

Since the establishment of the 4th Republic, the political landscape in Ghana has been predominantly dominated by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Both parties have enjoyed the opportunity to govern for two consecutive terms each, totaling 8 years, with no other political party coming close to disrupting this pattern.

As the 2024 elections approach, the ruling NPP is committed to shattering this cycle and extending their rule to 12 years. Conversely, the NDC remains steadfast in its determination to regain power.

For many Ghanaians, this repetitive cycle has not proven beneficial for the country, as the economy has not developed as anticipated under the stewardship of these two parties.

In light of this, individuals like Martin Kpebu advocate for the emergence of a robust third political force that can effectively challenge the dominance of the two major parties and provide a credible alternative for the electorate.

Engaging in a discussion on TV3’s The Key Point, the lawyer entreated churches, CSOs and TUC to make up the third force.

“The NPP and NDC, they are getting swollen headed. It is as if they know that come what may in eight years they will return. I wish they do four, four. I am waiting for the churches, the CSOs and TUC to come up with a candidate. Because we are looking for anything other than NPP and NDC. Anything other thing will do,” he said.

Stressing the potential of the TUC, he called on the Congress to learn from their mistakes when they failed to establish an effective party in the 1970s.

“TUC has to rise up. In the 70s, TUC formed a party and it collapsed. It doesn’t mean they cannot try again.
In the UK, it works. The Labour Party. Is it not the Labour people that formed the basis. Let’s go into our history. If TUC tried in the 70s and it didn’t work, does that mean that they should forever stop? You try again. In life, when you fall, do you continue lying down, don’t you get up?” he said.

For some individuals, former Trade Minister, Kwadwo Alan Kyeremanten, who has parted ways from the NPP to go independent is likely the third force Ghanaians have been praying for.

But according to Mr Kpebu, any things who is deeply embedded with the two major parties cannot be the third force needed to reckon with the NPP or NDC.

“So it is good that Alan has come for a third party though I don’t support Alan. No, no. He is too much of NPP. He would come and repeat the same things because the thing is that for all these years why was he quiet. He was Akufo-Addo, he kept quiet. I expected that from where he sits, when he saw that the ship was sinking, he couldn’t even leave early. He sat there so he was part of the problems. Alan doesn’t appeal to me, to be very honest. There is no way I can give him my vote.”

“There is no way I will go for someone deeply embedded with NPP or NDC,” he added.
