DJ Slim challenges article Wan’s view on consistent hit songs

Media personality, DJ Slim, has responded to Article Wan’s recent comments about the challenges of consistently producing hit songs.

Ghanaian musician Article Wan expressed that consistently producing hit songs can stifle an artist’s creativity due to the pressure

He believes that periods without major hits offer artists a chance to relax, reflect, and refine their craft.

In contrast, media personality DJ Slim contends that sustained success is achievable through hard work and discipline, citing artists like Shatta Wale, Sarkodie, and Stonebwoy as examples of musicians who have maintained a steady stream of popular releases over the years.

“If not for anybody, I can reference Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, and Stonebwoy. These people have been having back-to-back hit songs for years. I want Article Wan to look at his godfather Shatta Wale during the 2015-18 era, when the man was dropping hit songs like crazy.

“He can even go into the shower and compose a hit song. It was consistent for years. There were years Wale would drop 13 bangers. How many months do we even have in a year?” he queried.

This discourse highlights the differing perspectives on the balance between creative freedom and the demands of commercial success in the music industry.

Media personality, DJ Slim, has responded to Article Wan’s recent comments about the challenges of consistently producing hit songs.

One would recall that Article Wan recently stated that having constant hit songs can stifle an artist’s creativity due to the pressure it creates.

He mentioned that periods without hits allow artistes to relax, reflect, and refine their craft.

However, DJ Slim has disagreed with this assertion, citing examples of Ghanaian musicians like Shatta Wale, Sarkodie, and Stonebwoy, who have consistently delivered hit songs over the years.

Speaking on his show, DJ Slim referenced Shatta Wale’s successful years between 2015 and 2018, when the dancehall artiste released several hit songs every year.

While DJ Slim agreed that an artiste’s creative ability can sometimes be ‘shaky,’ especially during troubled times, he argued that consistent hit songs are achievable through hard work and discipline.

“I’ve seen interviews of big superstars where they say that sometimes when they are on stage, their next venue is the studio. So, contrary to what Article Wan says, I believe it’s hard work,” he stated.

  • Article Wan explains ‘Jump and Go’ comment on TGMA performances

Article Wan explains ‘Jump and Go’ comment on TGMA performances

Ghanaian musician Article Wan has shed light on his recent remarks about the quality of performances at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), clarifying that his words were intended to spark attention and highlight the need for more engaging performances.

Weeks ago, the artist made headlines when he urged TGMA organizers to consider him for future performances, stating that he could deliver better stagecraft than the “jump and go” acts typically featured.

“Kudos to TGMA for your remarkable work over the years! As you plan ahead, I humbly suggest curating a lineup of talents like myself and others who deliver truly memorable performances, not just ‘jump and go’ acts,” he wrote on Facebook.

During an interview with DJ Slim on Hitz FM, Article Wan explained the reasoning behind his choice of words.

“Richie said something here that when you are not getting the attention, you have to come out. You see the ‘jump and go’, I intentionally made it bold. I know our people like talking, they want to talk. So when I added the ‘jump and go’, they started reacting. I’ve gotten your attention,” he stated.

He further elaborated that his main concern was the need for high-quality and unforgettable performances at the TGMA.

“That particular side was to get your attention to listen to what I am talking about. I was talking about getting quality performances at the TGMA, something memorable for the world to see. Secondly, I said when artistes are performing, the front stage is very dull,” he added.

Having performed at TGMA in the early stages of his career, Article Wan admitted he was not satisfied with his own performance at the time. He believes he now has what it takes to deliver an electrifying show and is seeking another opportunity to prove himself.

Meanwhile, nominations for the 26th Telecel Ghana Music Awards remain open until Sunday, February 16, 2025.

  • Having a hit song doesn’t make an artiste great – Article Wan

Having a hit song doesn’t make an artiste great – Article Wan

Ghanaian artist Article Wan has shared his perspective on the value of a single hit song in defining an artist’s greatness or ensuring a long-lasting music career.

He argued that while a hit can offer temporary fame and financial success, it does not truly reflect an artist’s talent or long-term potential.

“A hit song is just a moment in time. It’s a flash in the pan. But to be a great artiste, you need to have depth and substance as well as being consistent in your music,” he explained.

“True greatness and longevity in music come from dedication, hard work, and a passion for one’s craft. Anybody can have a hit song, but not everybody can create music that resonates with people on a deeper level,” he added.

Article Wan suggests that a hit song is fleeting and that genuine artistic greatness comes from a combination of depth, substance, and consistent effort.

He believes that real success in the music industry is built on dedication, hard work, and a deep passion for one’s craft.

He points out that numerous talented artists may not achieve broad recognition due to a lack of a standout hit, but they often possess significant skills and qualities that surpass those of one-time hitmakers.

Furthermore, he notes a shift in music listeners’ preferences, indicating that while meaningful lyrics are still valued, the emphasis has changed compared to past generations.

“While today’s music audience still values meaningful lyrics, their appreciation is different from previous generations. Lyrics have been toned down in today’s music because that doesn’t count much in making a hit,” he said.

Article Wan emphasized that maintaining consistency is more crucial for a successful career than relying on a single hit song.

He acknowledged the unpredictability of which tracks will connect with audiences and achieve success.

People’s involvement in breaking records placing Ghana in the good books – Article Wan

Reggae and Afro-Dancehall artist Article Wan has voiced his opinions on the growing trend of record-breaking attempts in Ghana.

In a recent interview on Cape Coast’s Property FM, Article Wan humorously commented on the rising number of individuals making efforts to set or break records.

He playfully suggested that the Guinness Book of Records might have to release a new edition before leaving Ghana due to the increasing enthusiasm for record-breaking in the country.

“In terms of setting records, Ghana is on the rise. Before the Guinness Book of Records leaves Ghana, they might have to invest in a new edition because the number of people attempting to set or break records is steadily growing,” Article Wan said.

“As for me, the record I want to break, unless I engage in a Ton-A-Thon – that is, if I purchase something and sell it because the ‘Thon Thon’ trend is becoming quite prevalent in Ghana.”

“Today, you’ll hear someone proclaiming they will undertake a Talk-A-Thon, another person opting for a Stand-A-Thon, and yet another individual proposing a Walk-A-Thon,” he added.

Article Wan, however, recognized the positive influence of the trend, highlighting its capacity to create enthusiasm and encourage community involvement, particularly during the festive season in December.
