Bayern Munich Alphonso Daviesto be sidelined for months over ACL injury

Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies has torn the ACL in his right knee while playing for Canada and will be sidelined for several months, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

Davies picked up the injury just 12 minutes into Canada’s 2-1 victory over the United States in the Concacaf Nations League third-place match on Sunday. The 24-year-old left-back will miss the remainder of the season.

“Unfortunately, during international breaks there’s always the risk that players will return injured — this time it’s hit us particularly hard,” Bayern’s director of sport Max Eberl said in a statement, which added that Davies faces months out of action.

In another blow to Bayern’s backline, defender Dayot Upamecano has also been ruled out for several weeks with a knee injury, the club said, after the 26-year-old France international was diagnosed with loose joints in his left knee.

“The absences of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano are a heavy blow for Bayern,” Eberl added.

“Phonzy will get all the support he needs on his way back. We will also follow Upa closely in the coming weeks and assume that he will be available again soon. Our squad is strong and will compensate for these absences.”

Bayern Munich currently sit at the top of the league with a six-point advantage over second-placed Bayer Leverkusen.

Vincent Kompany’s team will face St. Pauli in a Bundesliga match on Saturday before hosting Serie A leaders Inter Milan for the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on April 8.

Barca’s youngster Marc Bernal suffers ACL injury, likely to miss many

Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal (17) is set to miss the majority of the season after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the LaLiga club announced on Wednesday. ‘

The injury occurred during Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano on Tuesday, forcing Bernal to leave the pitch in the final minutes.

Bernal, who made his debut in Barcelona’s opening-day victory against Valencia, also sustained damage to the external meniscus in his left knee.

“He will undergo surgical treatment in the coming days,” Barcelona said in a statement.

Barcelona face Real Valladolid next in La Liga on Saturday.

  • Arsenal’s Pelova suffers ACL rupture

    Arsenal’s Pelova suffers ACL rupture

Arsenal midfielder Victoria Pelova has suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while representing the Netherlands on international duty, the club has confirmed.

The 25-year-old was forced off in the 12th minute during her country’s Uefa Championship qualifying match against Finland last week after sustaining a knee injury.

Pelova is now scheduled for surgery and faces an extended period on the sidelines.

Her injury adds to a string of ACL setbacks for Arsenal players over the past year and a half, including forwards Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema, as well as defender Leah Williamson.

Research indicates that female footballers are at a higher risk of ACL injuries compared to their male counterparts, with potential factors including anatomical differences and hormonal influences.

However, the exact cause remains uncertain.

Dr. Katrine Okholm Kryger, a sports medicine expert specialising in football at St. Mary’s University in London, suggests ongoing discussions around whether the risk stems from biological factors or gender-specific training and management approaches.

In April, Fifpro, the Professional Footballers’ Association, Nike, and Leeds Beckett University announced “Project ACL,” a three-year initiative aimed at conducting research into ACL tears.

Kamara faces ACL injury; to miss rest of the season

Aston Villa midfielder Boubacar Kamara is facing a devastating blow, as he is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to a significant knee injury sustained in the match against Manchester United.

The 24-year-old influential midfielder was forced off the pitch in the 65th minute during the 2-1 defeat at Villa Park, and journalist David Ornstein has confirmed that he suffered an ACL injury.

Following a scan conducted today, it has been revealed that the France international is now set for an extended period of absence from the field.

This news comes as a massive setback for Unai Emery’s squad, as Kamara has been a key player, featuring in 30 games across all competitions.

Aston Villa has already experienced setbacks with injuries to key players like Tyrone Mings and Emiliano Buendia at the beginning of the season, and there are concerns regarding defender Ezri Konsa potentially facing a similar fate.

  • Why Michael Essien faced several injuries at Chelsea – Former teammate Mikel Obi explains

Why Michael Essien faced several injuries at Chelsea – Former teammate Mikel Obi explains

Former Chelsea player, Mikel Obi, has shed light on the reasons his Ghanaian counterpart, Michael Essien, suffered a lot of injuries during his stay at the club.

In an interview, Mikel Obi pointed to an ACL injury—a tear or sprain of the anterior cruciate (KROO-she-ate) ligament (ACL)—one of the strong bands of tissue that help connect your thigh bone (femur) to your shinbone (tibia).

He noted that due to Essien’s massive thighs, his knees could not withstand so much movement while on the field, making him prone to injuries.

“I remembered a certain teammate, Michael Essien, who suffered similar thing. He was always injured and it was always ACL. He had them on both news. I think then the doctor said your weight on your thighs, your thighs are heavy to carry… Your knees cannot hold them. If you look at Michael, his thighs are massive. But then when you look at his knees, his knees are that tiny and then it made sense,” he said.

Mikel Obi added that “until he started losing the upper body to give his knees the rest, then it started to work much better for him. It is so sad when you see players go through this.”

Essien’s football journey began in his home country, Ghana, where he played for Liberty Professionals. Essien moved to Europe and started his professional career with SC Bastia in France during the 2000-2001 season. His performances quickly attracted attention.

In 2003, Essien joined Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon) in Ligue 1. He played a key role in Lyon’s dominance in French football, winning multiple league titles.

In 2005, Essien made a high-profile move to Chelsea FC in the English Premier League for a then-club record fee.

He became a vital part of Chelsea’s midfield, known for his athleticism, versatility, and powerful playing style.

Essien won multiple domestic and international titles during his time with Chelsea, including the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.

Essien had a loan spell with Real Madrid during the 2012-2013 season, where he reunited with his former Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho.

After leaving Chelsea, Essien joined AC Milan in Serie A for the 2014-2015 season. He had brief stints with Panathinaikos in Greece and Indonesian club Persib Bandung before retiring from professional football.

Essien represented the Ghana national team, earning caps in multiple Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and FIFA World Cup tournaments. He played a crucial role in Ghana’s run to the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals.

After retiring from professional football, Essien has been involved in various activities, including coaching and ambassadorial roles.

Michael Essien is widely regarded as one of Ghana’s greatest football exports and had a successful career at top clubs in Europe.

  • England’s Mead makes comeback after over a year injury absence

England’s Mead makes comeback after over a year injury absence

England has received a significant boost ahead of their final Nations League fixtures as Beth Mead makes a return to the squad after being absent for over a year.

Mead’s last inclusion in an England squad dates back to November 2022, but a subsequent ACL injury in the same month forced her to miss the World Cup during the summer.

Although the Lionesses made it to the final without Mead, her comeback is crucial as they strive to top their Nations League group.

Facing the Netherlands at Wembley on Dec. 1 and Scotland at Hampden Park on Dec. 5, England must secure victories in both matches to lead their group.

Additionally, England holds the responsibility for Team GB’s Olympic qualification and needs to reach the Nations League final to ensure participation in Paris 2024.

England head into this batch of fixtures off the back of a 3-2 defeat to Belgium, a performance which Sarina Wiegman described as “sloppy” and “unnecessary.” It was the first time they have conceded three goals under Wiegman in her 43-match tenure.

Mead’s return will come as a huge boost, not least because she was the top scorer in the Lionesses’ triumphant Euro 2022 campaign.

Elsewhere, Grace Clinton and Khiara Keating retain their spots in the squad, having received their first call-ups last time around.

“We know we’ll need to win our last two games of 2023 and we’ll give everything we have for that outcome,” Wiegman said. “This group has shown resilience and strength of character time and time again and I have absolutely no doubts we’ll be ready to go when the whistle blows for both fixtures.

“We always embrace the opportunity to play at Wembley; it’s been home to some of our biggest and happiest occasions. We’ll need the crowd to play their part and continue the incredible backing they’ve shown for the team. They’ve always been there when we needed them and we’ll need them once again.

“An away fixture against Scotland is also an occasion we’ll all look forward to, but we’ll take it one game at a time.”

  • Arsenal confirms new signing Jurrien Timber’s ACL injury, anticipates an extended stay on sidelines

Arsenal confirms new signing Jurrien Timber’s ACL injury, anticipates an extended stay on sidelines

Timber, who recently joined the club from Ajax just last month, made his competitive debut during the 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

However, his appearance was cut short in the early stages of the second half, fueling speculation about a potential severe knee injury.

The confirmation has now come in, revealing the unfortunate truth.

The right-back, Timber, is set to undergo surgery for the injury, plunging him into a lengthy period of rehabilitation.

As a consequence, he is expected to be sidelined for several months, with the likelihood of missing the entirety of the 2023–24 season.

“Further to detailed assessments with consultant specialists since Saturday, we can confirm that Jurrien Timber has sustained an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee,” said the club in an official statement. “Jurrien will undergo surgery in the coming days and will be out of action for a period of time.”

Writing on social media, the player said: “Gutted to share that my injury is more serious than expected, especially after the warm welcome I’ve received. I wanted to repay you on the pitch, which will not be possible for the forthcoming period.”

While the player will undoubtedly be eager to make a swift return to the field, it’s probable that his season has concluded prematurely. Arsenal’s priority will be to avoid hastening his comeback in order to prevent any potential setbacks or relapses.
