Following a serious car accident, 2012 AFCON winner Rainford Kalaba spent over 24 hours in an artificial coma.
Recent reports from Citi Sports indicate that he is now responding well to treatment.
Initially, emergency medical services incorrectly pronounced Kalaba dead after his car collided head-on with a heavy truck on Saturday.
However, it was later clarified that he was in critical condition and was subsequently placed in a coma.
Fortunately, Kalaba’s condition has improved, and he is now responsive to treatment, as confirmed by Nzeba Chanda, the Public Relations Officer of the University Teaching Hospital.
“He is responding very well to treatment. We can see a lot of movement and a lot of gestures that are evident in the way he is responding to sounds and the way he is responding to touch and those are the things that we can tell that he’s really improved as compared to the day that he came.”

Kalaba, integral to the Zambian team’s historic triumph over Cote d’Ivoire in the 2012 AFCON, possesses a remarkable array of accomplishments.
His success extends to African club football, where he secured victories in the CAF Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup, and CAF Super Cup as part of TP Mazembe.
